Good morning everyone!
It was my 80th birthday last Thursday. (Where did those years go??).
My daughters told me to make sure I was at home after lunch and for the rest of the day. I was told to have a very light lunch, and mid-afternoon the whole family arrived, including one of my grandsons who works abroad but had come back for a few days so he could celebrate with me. I was touched by that.
I was dispatched to sit on the balcony and not come indoors until called! No hardship as it overlooks the harbour. When I was called back in, the table was groaning under the most appetising traditional English tea I have seen in a long time! I hate dining out so had refused their offer of a meal in a lovely restaurant. Mad, I know, but I wouldn’t have enjoyed it. My favourite meal is a typical English tea. We also had champagne later!
The food was amazing, little dainty sandwiches in several flavours, scones with jam and cream, and cakes, of course! All absolutely delicious. (Being at home, I could chat to everyone, not just those who would have been sitting near me if we had gone to a restaurant). Then there were the gifts! Apart from two enormous bouquets, there were loads of other things too numerous to mention. But the best gift of all was having my family around me. (Perfection would have been if my lovely husband had lived to be here) They are nearly all shift-workers and had managed to get leave to be with me, not easy, as I know, having been in the same job as most of them myself.
An especially lovely thing was having my 4 month old great-grandson here. My lovely granddaughter (who calls me her ‘bestie’) plonked him in my lap and told me I was to have as many cuddles as I wanted! Bliss! He lay there in my arms, staring up at me, then suddenly a huge smile appeared! He had realised who I am!
What a birthday!
They really did me proud. I love the fact that, with the exception of the grandson I mentioned, they are all fairly local so I can see them quite often.
So, although I didn’t want to be 80, I don’t fancy the alternative (!) and I had an absolutely lovely day thanks to my wonderful family. I count my blessings indeed.

Apologies. I posted before reading the previous posts and I now see that some people are having a dreadful time. I feel awful for being so insensitive, and I sincerely hope things improve for all of you.
I will take more care in future. 💐

Crossstitchfan no need to apologise I could feel your joy leaping out of your post.

So pleased your 80th birthday was so very special for you, surrounded by your family 🎂🥂🥳

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sun 17-Aug-25 12:27:00

It does indeed help me to know how much so many lovely GNetters care about us. It’s quite humbling really. Thank you. I admit to feeling scared.

But please Crossstitch don’t feel bad about having a joyous birthday! Life’s all its glory continues to go on all around us. As it does and should. x

Jaxjacky Sun 17-Aug-25 12:27:04

No need to apologise Crosstitchfan this thread has ups as well as downs.
I’m really pleased you had such a brilliant birthday, how thoughtful.

Usedtobeblonde Sun 17-Aug-25 12:27:53

So happy you had a good day crossstitchfan your family obviously love and appreciate you.
It is ok to be happy ,we know that others are not having a good time but that is life and we all have difficulties throughout our lives but wouldn’t want everyone to be unhappy .
When I have had problems I do think of others and hope they are happy.
To do otherwise would be very selfish and self centred.

Crossstich how wonderful to have different generations with you for a happy birthday.

cornergran Sun 17-Aug-25 12:56:23

fgt flowers and love to you both.

Marydoll Sun 17-Aug-25 13:39:11

Crossstichnan, it sounds as if you had a great time, with your lovely family.
Your balcony sounds idyllic!

I would have never guessed you were eighty.

I find pleasure in reading the joyful posts of others on this thread and elsewhere. I always have.
Just because some of us have a problematic life and sometimes, miserable times, it doesn't mean others should feel bad about posting about their happy times.

What a boring place Gransnet would be.

I am having lunch in my garden, I am content. Tried to post photos, but image is too large.

Good afternoon all , too busy to post earlier ,
Stripped the bed , carried away by the sunshine , changed the duvet cover , I use a top sheet to save changing it too frequently. No way can I put on the new cover , I have help on Sunday
Hung first wash out , off to Mass , candles were lit for all here
Home second wash out , third wash is trifling about , I had a clear out and anything I was keeping is now heading for a spin 😎
Scrubbed sandals , threw the rinsing water round the veg patch
Now having lunch , I might not move after I get this lot hung up , I find my rollator great for ferrying washing to the line , and it has a seat so I can pause if my arms get tired hanging up the clothes , very useful Madeline
Enjoy the rest of the day xx

I enjoyed reading your lovely account of your special birthday*Crossstichfan*. No need to apologise at all. Life has dealt me several cruel blows but I'm always more than happy to share the joys and sorrows of others. Many happy returns of your birthday 🎂
I celebrated my 80th a few years ago.
Kindest thoughts are with those of you who are currently going through stressful, sad or difficult times.

Grammaretto Sun 17-Aug-25 18:44:31

Crosstitchfan wow!! Congratulations and what a brilliant way to celebrate.
Never apologise for enjoying life. I don't and I believe DH would have wanted me to. Live life, not apologise

Crossstitchfan Sun 17-Aug-25 18:53:51

Thank you Grammaretto. You are right- my lovely late husband would also have said the same.

Crossstitchfan Sun 17-Aug-25 20:41:49

Thank you Aldom! Sorry for late response - I honestly thought I had replied, but now I see it must have disappeared.
I had a great day, made even better by the messages on here.
Off for a slice of cake now!

FGT if good, positive vibes count for anything, you have them aplenty on here.

Also, I suspect, there are lots of folk who read this thread and never post, yet who are also wishing for the very best outcome for you and Himself.

I hope it brings you comfort to know you are thought of.

I am one of these on this thread, a reader, but not a poster.

I join in with sending thoughts and prayers to the FGT’S.
