Well as todays weather is not as forecast (ie its wet and grey not sunny with blue skies) I started to browse the threads on GN (as an avoidance tactic regarding housework tasks wink ) and began wondering how we all came up with our GN names.

If you're happy to tell please do, but remember not to reveal anything which could compromise your anonymity.

Mine - Mamaa - came about as that was how my then 2 year old Grand-daughter said 'Grandma". She's nearly 16 now...

We had just been on holiday and seen puffins for the first time ... fascinating little birds!

I was out in the garden and had just decided to join you all. I found someone already had the name I had thought of and was trying to think of another name when a Robin with a particularly red breast hopped onto the feed tray. So that was how it was decided. I just added a random number.

Chose mine from a title of a Catherine Cookson book.

LovesBach Sat 20-Sept-25 21:44:23

Had to change my name at one point, and was listening to
'Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring'.

Simply a childhood nickname.

luluaugust Sat 20-Sept-25 22:03:36

The first part is my school nickname, strangely the second half was due to a GC asking me the meaning of the word.

Kupari45 Sat 20-Sept-25 22:52:45

Tried to think of a name when I first joined, but none were excepted. had a travel brochure next to my computer about Dubrovnik, and Kupari was on the map of the area.

I had to keep my mouth shut about certain things with some people so came here to find an outlet, it seems to have worked!

It is my lovely Granny’s name and also my granddaughter’s name.

My work was foot health care . I visited regular clients in their homes. One lovely client told me he and his wife had nicknames for family and friends and I was Miss Toe Toe

At the time I signed up for Gransnet I had an allotment, which was taking up a signifigant amount of my time.

Witzend Sat 20-Sept-25 23:19:30

It was the name I used on a forum for carers of people with dementia. Nuff sed really! Couldn’t be bothered at the time to think of another.

LadyGaGa Sat 20-Sept-25 23:35:26

Two of my GC called me Ga Ga when they were very small. I always hoped it would stick as I thought it was pretty cool - but it soon morphed into Grandma. It was the first name that came into my mind when I signed up (and I do love Lady Ga Ga!)

nanna8 Sat 20-Sept-25 23:50:12

I’ve got 8 grandchildren - so nanna8. I also have 6 great but thought that was a bit much ( I’m not that old ,my mob started young !)

Curlywhirly Sun 21-Sept-25 00:21:19

It rhymes with my name and was my nickname at primary school, and it has nothing to do with my hair being curly, it's straight!

Because I have been…..

Sparklefizz Sun 21-Sept-25 08:37:47

I saw the name in a magazine article on online dating and liked it as it suggested champagne and parties and fun. Earlier this year when I mentioned on a thread that I don't drink, a couple of posters suggested I was lying because of my GN name. In actual fact, the name "Sparklefizz" is the nearest I get to alcohol. smile

LovesBach. I always thought you were Welsh as Bach in that language means little. It never occurred to me it was the composer Bach.

annodomini Sun 21-Sept-25 12:03:55

My original name was a mixture of my two forenames. I can't remember now why I decided to change it, but looking in the mirror, the one I have since gone by was appropriate then and is even more appropriate now.

Cumbrianmale56 Sun 21-Sept-25 15:46:52

I was 56 and from Cumbria when I joined, it's that boring.

Gwyllt Sun 21-Sept-25 16:02:32

We had just moved into our present home and the garden had not been touched for years It was wild

Grandma70s Sun 21-Sept-25 16:13:10

So boring it’s hardly worth explaining. I’m a grandma and I was in my 70s when I chose the name. I’m in my 80s now.

cornergran Sun 21-Sept-25 19:38:17

I’m a simple soul. There’s no imagination in mine, we live on a corner.

glammagran Sun 21-Sept-25 19:42:44

I used this name as DD1 used this as a nickname for me when she had DGD1. Not really sure why!

hulahoop Sun 21-Sept-25 19:55:19

I had been showing gc how to do it.
