Well as todays weather is not as forecast (ie its wet and grey not sunny with blue skies) I started to browse the threads on GN (as an avoidance tactic regarding housework tasks wink ) and began wondering how we all came up with our GN names.

If you're happy to tell please do, but remember not to reveal anything which could compromise your anonymity.

Mine - Mamaa - came about as that was how my then 2 year old Grand-daughter said 'Grandma". She's nearly 16 now...

I love this thread.

Mine is what my Late Mums friends referred me as.. Vi 's girl (Violet)

In the care home I work in, most residents have hilarious nicknames for us staff.

One of the male residents never calls me by my name, just ''weirdo'' which creases me up laughing every time!

He'll see me coming and say ''It's the weirdo again!

The 60 is my age!

M0nica Sat 20-Sept-25 15:46:42

I was igned up under another name but someone found out who I was (ancient history). I was thinking what to change my name to and commented to myself that I needed a new moniker..... So M0nica I became (I was told my new name had to include a number.)

Character from The Rocky Horror Show plus lucky number.

Two characters from one of my novels

Squiffy Sat 20-Sept-25 16:18:07

Mine came from a relative who described their in-laws as getting squiffy at Christmas. For some reason it came to mind when I changed my GN name. The irony is that I don’t drink alcohol!

Mine was an error was meant to be
Far too old, when linked together it is a bit rude!

Aely Sat 20-Sept-25 16:35:00

I used the same name on a previous, similar site I belonged to. It was a name I came across while I was doing my family history. It turned out that "Aely"'s family was not the one I was looking for, but I liked the name.

Way back in the depths of time, when Virgin chat rooms existed, I was Tenderfoot because I was not only new to such rooms but suffered from very sore feet. When the chat rooms closed and I later joined the new site, I found Tenderfoot had already been snaffled so I became Aely.

I’ve just popped back to see if anyone had answered my post and it’s great that you’ve taken the time to contribute. There are some very lovely and interesting explanations here, thank-you all.

PS I did ponder as to which forum
it should go on but as it’s not a ‘serious’ question needing advice or similar, I thought chat would be best and I put lighthearted just in case I was thought to be delving where I shouldn’t!

You’ve all cheered up my dreary Saturday no end- thanks again you lovely lot! x

I used to say Go Molly as I got in my old car, but joined together it sounded better thé other way round.

Sarnia Sat 20-Sept-25 16:50:59

The very old name for the island where I was born.

sassenach512 Sat 20-Sept-25 17:06:15

I'm a big fan of the 'Outlander' tv show and books by Diana Gabaldon. Jamie Fraser refers to his English wife as 'sassenach'

grannydarkhair Sat 20-Sept-25 17:31:17

It described me when my oldest g’son was born. His other Gran is grannyyellowhair. She’s now white haired and I’m a mix of silver/grey/dark.

Aely

I had a Scottish friend at school called Eilidh which is pronounced something like Aely but people reading her name usually either pronounced it Edith or Eyelid.

Quite simple - it's my initials - L S

LadyGracie Sat 20-Sept-25 19:19:18

After my beautiful posh cat, unfortunately she’s no longer with us.

TwiceAsNice Sat 20-Sept-25 19:45:13

I joined Gransnet when my daughter had twins . I was thrilled to be a Granny so two babies were “TwiceasNice”.

Fidelity2 Sat 20-Sept-25 19:59:17

My Husband had a relative who was a sailor on HM S Fidelity. The story of its sinking always interested me.

Lomo123 Sat 20-Sept-25 20:01:11

Mine was my sign on when I was still employed, many moons ago.

Skydancer Sat 20-Sept-25 20:26:05

I love birdwatching and the wonderful bird of prey, the Marsh Harrier, is known as the sky dancer because of its incredible sky-high acrobatic movements.

4xGranny Sat 20-Sept-25 20:27:32

I think mine is pretty obvious! It’s the same name I use for my online word games.

Moth62 Sat 20-Sept-25 20:36:05

Mine is very boring compared to some of the others! I was looking round the kitchen for inspiration when I saw a moth in the window and I was 62 at the time. That’s it, I’m afraid. I found Gransnet six years ago when I googled magazines for older women and a link came up to a thread on the subject. I immediately loved the warmth and wit demonstrated by its contributors and decided to join. Gransnet kept DH and me going throughout lockdown and he often reads the threads as well as me. There’s such a wonderful mix of subjects and I always pop in every morning to see what folk are up to. The love and support shown to those who are suffering for whatever reason is very heartwarming. It’s part of my life now, so I thank you all from my heart. ❤️

I was feeling quite dejected & not complimentary to myself when I signed up to make my first post.
I'm fine with the name still, though.
