I submit that the ethnic custom of halal slaughter will fade away as the younger generations become better educated, more travelled, more in touch with other cultures of belief, and more inclined to be vegetarian.

Yes, GrannyGravy13, you make your choice. There can be ways to not eat halal if so choosing. Some Supermarkets clearly labelled own branded meat is not halal.

Eat pork.

Maremia Wed 08-Oct-25 17:37:08

Agree with you BlueBelle about the pig birthing crates. Cruel.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 08-Oct-25 17:40:57

I am fortunate when buying meat and fish I use the local farm shop only buy free range, we live close to a thriving fishing area and can have a delivery straight from the small boats.

Just waiting for someone to say vegetables suffer…

They can be Punjabi too, JamesandJon33. That's why I used italics in an earlier post.

Galaxy Wed 08-Oct-25 17:51:07

Yes I am trying to avoid halal meat if possible, I know my favourite local takeaway use halal meat so I just avoid the meat dishes there, I am probably less diligent with supermarket meat.

Oh dear something I am not aware of.... growing up .. I knew our animals were slaughtered. plus some of farmers today are really into welfare. Would need to look into this more

JamesandJon33 Wed 08-Oct-25 18:07:54

bonbons01 That wasn’t terribly clear was it ?

Perhaps we should be Jains .
Their diet is strict.
Even pulling up rooted vegetables offends them.

It's fine to be vegetarian or a vegan if you manage to function and don't lecture other people on your saintly existence !
My daughter's ling term ex was a Vegan .
He refused to eat out least the crockery and utensils be contaminated with "products of the flesh . "
I found catering for him tiring and thankless .
Ill tempered, volatile and moody -he was ill all the time and spent most of his time resting in bed.
My daughter was absolutely exhausted trying to hold down a full time job,run a home and raise their child.

I try not to eat meat and fish ,but I don't always find it easy.

Halal slaughter is barbaric. Surely we're better than that!

If you eat meat, (I do) you need to educate yourself . Slaughter houses are never pretty .I went regularly with our lambs.

If you are in UK and eat "regular" slaughtered meat, you are eating an animal that was stunned then bled out while it was unconscious but still alive. Exactly the same as stunned Halal.

<https://www.rspca.org.uk/adviceandwelfare/farm/slaughter/religiousslaughter>

Around 88% of animals slaughtered in the UK for Halal are stunned first.
All animals slaughtered under the Shechita (for Kosher) are non-stunned.

bonbons01 Wed 08-Oct-25 18:30:23

Yes, sunami, that is a choice too.

Galaxy Wed 08-Oct-25 18:30:47

The rspca are very clear that they are campaigning for the sale of non stun meat ( whether halal or kosher) to be abolished so they obviously have some concerns. They are also campaigning for clear labelling so consumers van make an informed choice.

bonbons01 Wed 08-Oct-25 18:31:54

What wasn't "terribly clear"?

bonbons01 Wed 08-Oct-25 18:36:39

The above is to JamesandJon33.

Grannygravy do you really think the prawns and fish have wonderful lives or don’t they count !!!!

More to the point, does she think they had a kind death?

How does she think fish and prawns are killed? They suffocated.

JamesandJon33 Wed 08-Oct-25 19:36:19

bonbon01 why you used italics,

Maremia Wed 08-Oct-25 20:00:11

I have read about Halal, but is Kosher by the same method?

Blossoming Thu 09-Oct-25 11:27:09

Think pigs are gassed to death, which is not kind.

They’re not exactly ‘gassed to death’, a high concentration of CO2 is used to stun them before slaughter.

You are right to say it is not kind, many suffer an agonising death as a result.

animalequality.org.uk/news/2025/03/24/scientists-warn-that-millions-of-pigs-suffer-agonising-deaths-in-the-uk-every-year/

JamesandJon33 Thu 09-Oct-25 11:36:52

* Maremia* kosher is similar in how the animals are killed and of course no pork products. Additionally you have the separation of meat and dairy, both in the cooking and in preparation.

The most effective message to get out to the public is that it's good to have smaller helpings of flesh , and have meat free meal sometimes.
It scares people too much to suddenly stop eating flesh and they don't like to even imagine animal suffering at all. So the new public conscience evolves slowly but surely.

I’m vegetarian but have a dog and cats and cats must have meat so I buy meat.
I hate the cruelty and environmental damage caused by the production of meat and milk. Humans don’t need either but our pets do.

Caleo Thu 09-Oct-25 18:32:55

What I did was stop buying pig . I now don't even want to buy pig. And it has been comparatively easy to not buy cow and lamb after giving up pig.

I do allow myself the luxury of my own dog, and he gets Pedigree Chum.

I keep hoping that artificially -cultured muscle tissue will soon be available at Tesco

Oh I am sure it will be available soon.

Manufacturing meat substitutes or artificial meat uses more water and resources than free range animals, more detrimental to the planet and the ecosystem.

Why do pets need meat and milk any more than humans?

The production of soya is a case in point.

Yes, very similar.

Nearly the same, slight differences.
Kosher butchers use razor sharp knives to cut the throat quickly and cleanly in one stroke. The animal dies very quickly.
