I submit that the ethnic custom of halal slaughter will fade away as the younger generations become better educated, more travelled, more in touch with other cultures of belief, and more inclined to be vegetarian.

I think it’s more likely that all meat eaters will have to eat halal unless they buy from specialist butchers

More vegetarians. Maybe. Probably people eating more plant based food in a mixed diet?

I have heard that much meat these days is halal. Supermarkets as well as other butchers. That way they don’t have to label meat separately.

In that case let's hope that the younger generation in these ethnic cultures also become better educated in the rights of women.

Halal slaughter is barbaric. Surely we're better than that!

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Wed 08-Oct-25 13:41:44

Seems not Aveline 🤷‍♀️
I read an article once about Halal slaughtering.
Fine for one or two animals (terrified, no stun gun, smell each other’s sweat, knows what coming) to feed a village with a prayer said.

But industrial sized meat factories?
It’s beyond cruel. But we allow it (condone it).
Beyond awful.

We also allow kosher slaughtering.

We're probably eating kosher slaughtered meat without knowing it because the rear end of animals can't be sold as kosher. Therefore, slaughterhouses sell the rear end of animals to the general meat markets.

I despair for humanity at the cruelty caused by religion. It's all nonsense.

According to Farmers Weekly, 70 % of sheep killed in uk abbatoirs are killed by halal methods, 30% of lambs, 50% of goats, 13% of chickens and 5% of cattle. (2024 figures). Abbatoirs find it simpler to use halal methods as this increases their potential market. So everyone is already eating halal meat unless they know exactly who has reared and slaughtered the animal.

Farmers Weekly reported in January 2025 that the UK halal market is ‘set for major growth’. You pays your money and you takes your choice.

Yes Aveline absolutely agree with you
I'm a vegan but I'm certain they stun the animals before slaughter in this country. Yet it doesn't stop the poor creatures being petrified waiting to be killed; the smells, the palpable fear, the frightened noises of their fellow animals. Its abhorrent to me.
Stun the poor creatures at the very least, better still don't eat meat. 😑

And how 'kind' is regular slaughter?

Aveline Wed 08-Oct-25 14:52:17

It's kinder than just slitting their throats

dalrymple23 Wed 08-Oct-25 15:20:52

I read some time ago that fast food chains (McD, KFC, Burger K etc) all serve Halal meat, as do all schools. It is a hideous practice and should be banned. It is not what this country was or should be all about. Or is it now?

I noticed a recent thread on GN where the OP asked people what their favourite cuisines were. In responses Indian cuisine featured quite heavily. In the UK the meat based dishes in the vast majority of Indian restaurants and takeaways are halal.

Maremia Wed 08-Oct-25 16:15:30

Think pigs are gassed to death, which is not kind.

Esmay Wed 08-Oct-25 16:23:33

Kosher slaughtering is also very cruel .
Most of my Jewish don't keep kosher kitchens .
They find the meat too expensive and the kitchens too labour intensive.
My Muslim friends eat halal meat ,but dispute the authenticity of the origin . They claim that the prayers aren't recited in the correct way /sequence .

Esmay Wed 08-Oct-25 16:23:55

Errata -Jewish friends.

I enjoy Indian food, but, I only eat prawn, fish and vegetable dishes.

Aveline Wed 08-Oct-25 16:35:17

As if prayers are going to help the poor animals.

bonbons01 Wed 08-Oct-25 16:42:22

Yes, GrannyGravy13, you make your choice. There can be ways to not eat halal if so choosing. Some Supermarkets clearly labelled own branded meat is not halal.

BlueBelle Wed 08-Oct-25 16:48:36

I think you d be surprise at some of the practices in non halal establishments and have you seen the dreadful conditions pigs can be kept in, in tiny pens just giving birth and nothing else and the chickens in sheds where they cant move Before pointing the finger we need to get our own ‘killing fields’ in order then we have genuine room for complaint

BlueBelle Wed 08-Oct-25 16:49:57

Grannygravy do you really think the prawns and fish have wonderful lives or don’t they count !!!!

Esmay Wed 08-Oct-25 17:11:54

Perhaps we should be Jains .
Their diet is strict.
Even pulling up rooted vegetables offends them.

It's fine to be vegetarian or a vegan if you manage to function and don't lecture other people on your saintly existence !
My daughter's ling term ex was a Vegan .
He refused to eat out least the crockery and utensils be contaminated with "products of the flesh . "
I found catering for him tiring and thankless .
Ill tempered, volatile and moody -he was ill all the time and spent most of his time resting in bed.
My daughter was absolutely exhausted trying to hold down a full time job,run a home and raise their child.

I try not to eat meat and fish ,but I don't always find it easy.

bonbons01 Wed 08-Oct-25 17:23:03

BlueBelle, there is no surprise from me.

JamesandJon33 Wed 08-Oct-25 17:23:39

Indian restaurants are not halal. Indians are not Muslim. However many ‘Indian’ restaurants are Bangladeshi…..who are Muslim. Therefore halal.
