Carpe diem -seize the day!

(38 Posts)
RosieandherMaw Fri 24-Oct-25 22:05:20

We are always being urged to do this aren’t we?
Sometimes, rather like when I am instructed to “Have a nice day !” and I’m tempted to growl “ No thank you, I have other plans” my reaction to carpe diem is similar.
So here is some much more sensible advice.

Both those sayings can annoy me too Maw especially if said to me on a grumpy day!

I love Steve 😁

GrannyGravy13 Fri 24-Oct-25 22:12:07

I think Steve is a relative 👍🏻

This reminds me of something I once read many years ago.

Customer enters a stationers' (that dates it!) and asks to try out a particular fountain pen.
He tests the nib by writing a few lines and announces that he will buy it.

Thank you, the assistant replies, will that be all, Mr. Diem?

Apologies, *RosieandherMaw”. Guilty as charged. I shall stop from this day on!

Bellasnana Sat 25-Oct-25 05:14:58

No don’t stop grandMattie! I’m sure I’m not the only one who loves your daily greeting. We aren’t all curmudgeons who take offence at everything! It reminds me of my daughter who jokingly says ‘seize the carp’!😄

BlueBelle Sat 25-Oct-25 05:29:20

The trouble is when sonething is said every day it loses it meaning because we can’t have a brilliant day every day so it becomes meaningless but we all do it one way or another
(Whenever I see ‘Carpe diem’ I just think of fish 🤣 but that’s my brain)
It certainly doesn’t offend me but it’s something to ignore
Same as telling a stranger ‘see you later’ when you know you ll probably never ever see them again

I m guilty of saying ‘have a good day’ to people just as a positive end to a conversation but you’re right Rosie it’s an unnecessary and not really meant it’s just a nicer way of ending a chat than saying a rather stark ‘goodbye’ or ‘make sure you trip over the step on the way out’

loopyloo Sat 25-Oct-25 05:44:08

Do not be deterred, Grandmattie.
I appreciate your greeting each morning.
And it is a useful reminder that each day is to be enjoyed and appreciated as much as we can.
Some things need to be said each day.
So that was Horace.
Now on to Voltaire. We defend your right to say what you think, Rosie etc.

RosesandLilac Sat 25-Oct-25 06:33:17

Blimey 😵‍💫 it’s come to something when a cheery ending to a message gives offence!
It wouldn’t cross my mind to object to how anyone signs off 🤷🏼‍♀️

Dwmxwg Sat 25-Oct-25 06:57:27

As someone who reads the good morning thread daily, I believe Grandmattie has every right to sign off “Carpe diem”
This is clearly the motto that she follows in life and one to be admired

Don't stop it. I don't post that often but do enjoy reading what the regulars are doing.

karmalady Sat 25-Oct-25 07:05:54

I make no apology for wishing everyone a good day, every day. Carpe diem and good day are innocuous and nice ways to end a post. Some of us are more upbeat than others and like to share the good energy. Would you like some OP. Do have a good day

Woollywoman Sat 25-Oct-25 07:29:28

RosieandherMaw, your post has made me smile just when I needed it… thank you!

GrannyIvy Sat 25-Oct-25 07:30:36

Well said Karma. I too am guilty of of saying “have a good day” or various versions of it and think it is a nice way to end a post. I don’t think Rosie means to offend anyone. GM. Carry on signing off as you always do it is always lovely to read your good morning news.

RosieandherMaw Sat 25-Oct-25 07:32:13

Blimey - @ last eight posts! hmmhmm
It was meant to be lighthearted, a jokey post!
Thank you Karma, my “good energy” is well topped up, as is my SOH. hmm

GrannyGravy13 Sat 25-Oct-25 07:34:51

I saw it as a jokey OP Maw not aimed at anyone, just an observation of social interactions 👍

RosieandherMaw Sat 25-Oct-25 07:48:21

Thank you GrannyGravy13 !smile
As it was from another source, clearly not aimed at anybody in particular but it raised a smile here at any rate!

“Have a nice day now!” 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Usedtobeblonde Sat 25-Oct-25 07:56:23

I always ended my posts on GM with “have the best day you can everyone” because that is what I hoped for readers.
Likewise on Soop’s kitchen.
Just a pleasant way of wishing everyone well.

I think the picture and the wording are funny, and cute.

However, as I'm full of silly expressions when I interact with people, and it would be more of an effort to rein them in, I'll just carry on.
Have a good one!

RosieandherMaw Sat 25-Oct-25 08:03:22

Just to add, the reference was to “Have a nice day (usually followed by “now” and with a mid- Atlantic twang) not “a good one, the best day possible” or any other more genuine and sincere valediction.

JenniferEccles Sat 25-Oct-25 08:36:59

I think it’s much preferable to being advised to ‘take care now’ as shop assistants often urge us!

Iam64 Sat 25-Oct-25 08:42:22

*RosieandherMaw*, your post has made me smile just when I needed it… thank you!

Same here 🌞
I’m generally a bit of a Pollyanna, we get this day once, find something positive in it. Yesterday was the third anniversary of my lovely husband’s funeral, it took place three eeeks after he died. I confess to feeling tired and sad, having to remind myself there are blessings to count, dogs to walk so get up and out.
But the idea of just responding “I’m fed up, I miss D, I preferred my life then “ …. And going on to list all the irritants needing sorting iPad appealing 🙈

Marydoll Sat 25-Oct-25 08:49:12

Now that I have found the actual thread, which has upset some, I can see it was meant to be tongue in cheek and no offence intended.

For me, Carpe diem is not posted as a meaningless sign off, but a genuine wish, to make the best of every moment of the day.

Blossoming Sat 25-Oct-25 08:58:21

I remember when Grandmattie began using this sign off and for me it is rather poignant. She certainly lives up to it herself.

I did enjoy the cartoon RosiesMaw, I haven’t come across the creator before.

TheWeirdoAgain60 Sat 25-Oct-25 09:17:35

HA HA HA that's hilarious!

I follow Steve on Twitter!
