It’s a gloomy day, but this brought a huge smile to my face! I’m so pleased for him, well done Sir David Beckham.

The comments from some are truly awful - how many who are so insulting actually know this man? Unless you are a relative or friend you can base you opinions only on what you read in the press - and how honest the media is, as we all know.

I agree, LovesBach but we’re all entitled to an opinion.

how many who are so full of praise actually know this man?
Unless you are a relative or friend you can base you opinions only on what you read in the press - and how honest the media is, as we all know.

Applies equally either way.

What does his wife’s smile or lack of smile have to do with him becoming a Sir ?

mabon2 Thu 06-Nov-25 12:30:54

The Qatar World Cup was his downfall as far as I'm concerned. A grasping man who was already very wealthy. I know people who work quietly who deserve an honour far more than that ex footballer an his miserable looking wife.

I do hope all those stating that they know of more deserving people have filled in a nomination form on the government website…

David Beckham earned my respect when he stood with other people to pay his respects to the late Queen. He could so easily have done what some other prominent people did, queue jump, because of course they were so important!!!! Great chap, his knighthood well deserved.

The UK invented Parliament and the principle of free speech - let's not embrace the punitive restrictions imposed by HRH Trump on the American people.

At one time things got so bad in England that King John's own barons turned on him and forced him to sign Magna Carta. How long before Donald Trump's rich supporters decide to do something similar?

LovesBach Thu 06-Nov-25 18:43:48

My post has nothing at all to do with 'punitive restrictions ' - or Donald Trump, or Magna Carta. Neither have I said that people shouldn't say what they think - it's simply surprising that such venom is heaped upon a person they probably don't know and have never met.

Aveline Fri 07-Nov-25 06:12:26

It's exactly the same for all those pouring praise on a person they only know from what they read or hear from the media. I'm not impressed by this person based on checking out some facts.

Mollygo Fri 07-Nov-25 13:46:37

It’s another teacup affair.
Noticeably, Brooklyn wasn’t on the family photo.
Shall we guess whether he wasn’t invited , because his wife offended Victoria or because he didn’t want to be there?

Much more fun to look back on GN and see who disliked the honours system before David’s award.

Anniebach Fri 07-Nov-25 13:53:07

If I searched ‘why didn’t Victoria smile ‘, there will be a fact to read ?

Yes.

I didn’t realise you self nominate, I thought others nominated you

Mollygo Fri 07-Nov-25 16:59:25

I didn’t know you could self nominate either. The only people I know who have received honours were nominated by others.

Casdon Fri 07-Nov-25 17:09:22

You cannot self nominate for a knighthood.

Aveline Sat 08-Nov-25 09:45:40

You can lobby like mad. It ain't what you know...

Allira Sat 08-Nov-25 10:42:59

You cannot self-nominate for any honours.

You have to be nominated by someone else.
Supporting evidence of your achievements have to be provided by two supporters.
The nominee should not know about the nomination.

Saying that people lobby for this is strange.
Just because someone is nominated does not mean the Honours Committee will agree. I'm sure the Honours Committee is more honourable than to listen to lobbying.

Aveline

No, you can't.

I know people who have been awarded honours for their achievements and it doesn't work like that.

Thst's right.

And they are not supposed to tell you that they have done so.

Aveline Sat 08-Nov-25 15:42:33

Allira I think it's lovely that you think that. Unfortunately, it would seem that I'm more familiar with human nature than you - also have actual practical experience of this. Sadly.

Aveline Sat 08-Nov-25 15:51:58

PS I tried to send you a pm with more detail but it wouldn't send.

Emeraldforest Sat 08-Nov-25 16:00:46

His voice is less squeaky these days, he's more attractive with age.
I'm not a fan of the honours system,or celebs for that matter, but am a Manchester United fan, going back to the loss of many Busby Babes back in the 50s!

Allira Sat 08-Nov-25 16:23:30

Oh, not again! Not just you Aveline
I'll message GNHQ

Don't tell me people are cheating the system 😲

Aveline Sat 08-Nov-25 18:37:37

Not cheating just being human I guess. Most nice people are surprised and glad to be nominated and awarded an honour. Others feel it's their due and act accordingly.
