Good morning to all the night owls
I m late waking this morning and seem to have missed my
3 am slot however 4.30 am will do ( 4 and a half hours is positively a very long sleep for me) who knows I might even drop of again for a doze before I get up at 6 ready for some work
So who s around ?

ferry23 Sun 07-Dec-25 03:12:40

Well I managed to watch the whole of The Traitors Australia through the night yesterday and today. I'm now progressing to Series 2 but had a break and read for a bit. I'm definitely going to try the patches. I've never been a great sleeper but being awake most of the night is getting a bit wearing 😕

JamesandJon33 Sun 07-Dec-25 03:41:23

Morning everyone. Usual time awake for most of us. Just reading a silly, but quite interesting romance given to me by a friend. Then a cup of tea I think and perhaps back to sleep. Who knows, it’s different every night

Charleygirl5 Sun 07-Dec-25 03:43:31

I either sleep like a baby or am wide awake ie now. I have lymphoedema in both legs, which itch like hell, and I can't find anything which will help. I can cope during the day but not at night.

I came downstairs, had a cup of coffee and a biscuit, emtied the dishwasher and filled the washing machine.

I will heat a microwaveable pad because I like a warm bed. I will go to bed now I think. Luckily zilch on today.

I’m awake as well. Woke up with indigestion and feeling hot. I went to sing carols at a tree lighting, so we ate late. I’m having a drink of water and will try to get back to sleep.

Georgesgran Sun 07-Dec-25 04:05:35

Went to bed at 3am and fell asleep within minutes. Unfortunately, acid reflux has woken me and I’ve been sick.
I usually have a solid 4 hours, so I’ve no idea what’s caused this.

BlueBelle Sun 07-Dec-25 04:07:17

Morning I have slept for England went to my nearest city yesterday with my daughter walked a lot had a Korean lunch bowl got home fell asleep by the fire and slept till bedtime !!!
Went to bed expecting a really poor night but slept again from 11 to 4
Sorry about the lymphoedema Charliegirl that sounds horrible, itching is just awful
Ferry there’s a new Uk Traitors starting NY eve I think

Now going to cuddle down for another doze maybe

Been awake since 1.40am and going to London for the day! Grrrrr just when I need a good nights sleep!

BlueBelle Sun 07-Dec-25 04:52:28

Oh that’s well annoying Purplepixie*

mum2three Sun 07-Dec-25 05:03:54

It's 5 am now but I've been up for a while. I think the darkness makes us sleepy, as I fall asleep every evening, then only get a short time in bed.

J52 Sun 07-Dec-25 05:07:20

Still awake, but have been in bed since 4.15 am DH now awake and downstairs making us cups of tea.
I’ll probably nod off at 6!
Hope everyone gets through tomorrow without feeling too tired.

grandMattie Sun 07-Dec-25 05:28:31

This thread seems to have had a good effect on me as I have tended, on the whole, to have better nights since it started! I have only a little more sleep, but generally the quality is better. So thank you!
I think feeling tired is a given for old age, unfortunately, but grinding, bone weary tiredness shouldn’t be.
Have a good day all.

Another rubbish night, but knowing I am not the only one helps me to accept my fate.

BlueBelle Sun 07-Dec-25 07:03:00

👋you re definitely not the only one NanKate many of us are here and I think it helps to know that
Try not to worry, try to accept and know it’s normal for older people to pop in and out of sleep we re all going to be ok

Erica23 Sun 07-Dec-25 07:28:11

We’ve had an unsettled night, we’d been out during the early evening both of
us felt cold so we had hot chocolate and a couple of plain biscuits, poor DH had tummy rumblings all night not painful but still, that’s never happened before either, strange.
Awake fully at 5am, glad I haven’t much to do today.

Usedtobeblonde Sun 07-Dec-25 07:42:37

Went back after my cuppa and woke at 7:30
That probably means 6/7 hours altogether, not bad at all.

rafichagran Sun 07-Dec-25 07:53:27

Could not sleep at all, went to bed at 3.30. Up again now, had a cup of tea and a croissant, now scrolling Gransnet. Partner up and going for a 15 mile run today so I may go back to bed, then ho out and finish my Christmas shopping.

Sara1954 Sun 07-Dec-25 08:20:03

Got up at about 2.00, read for an hour or so, then annoyingly woke up before six, normal time, the only day I don’t have to get up.
So back to the sofa and my book.

ferry23 Sun 07-Dec-25 08:32:29

NanKate

Another rubbish night, but knowing I am not the only one helps me to accept my fate.

This thread definitely makes me feel better.

I always feel like I'm the only person awake in the middle of the night which is quite a lonely feeling. Then I read this and see other people are awake and doing their washing etc at stupid o clock and it makes me feel a bit more normal!

Grandmabatty Sun 07-Dec-25 08:46:50

I was awake at three for a bit but then slept to after seven. So a success for me!

Kiwiqueen123 Sun 07-Dec-25 09:39:13

Definitely don't feel so alone now I've found this thread.
Awake 2.45, didn't get up but thinking about all I need to do. Family coming today. Luckily we're going out to eat but table not available until 2.00 pm. Finally got up at 7.45. Middle of the night "thinking" is not good is it. Weather grim today too but not cold.

NanKate Sun 07-Dec-25 09:46:30

Thanks for the supportive messages.

What annoys me is when in the newspaper I have just read ‘It is important to get a good nights’ sleep’. If only it were that easy.

The doctor gave me Amitriptyline to help with sleep, but I don’t want to get hooked so haven’t taken any. Have you?

ferry23 Sun 07-Dec-25 10:11:23

After years of taking this that and the other pills and remedies for insomnia, I doubt whether even a bash on the head with a sledgehammer would give me a good night's sleep grin.

Zopiclone used to give me about 5 hours on a good night but my GP won't prescribe them now as I'm "too old" (early 70's).

HelterSkelter1 Sun 07-Dec-25 13:12:37

My DD 48 takes Amitryptiline for other things, but it does make her sleep. Take it very early in the evening. I think hers are 15mg..I think. So a low dose. If a GP has prescribed it for insomnia you could give it a go.

Grannyipad Sun 07-Dec-25 14:02:33

There is a lot about this on social media. Interesting!

^Continuous sleep is a modern habit, not an evolutionary constant, which helps explain why many of us still wake at 3 am and wonder if something's wrong. It might help to know that this is a deeply human experience. For most of human history, a continuous eight-hour snooze was not the norm. Instead, people commonly slept in two shifts each night, often called a "first sleep" and "second sleep."

Each of these sleeps lasted several hours, separated by a gap of wakefulness for an hour or more in the middle of the night. Historical records from Europe, Africa, Asia, and beyond describe how, after nightfall, families would go to bed early, then wake around midnight for a while before returning to sleep until dawn.^
