Mine is Stop The Cavalry (Jonah Lewie?)
I know lots of people really dislike it but I find myself humming it when it’s played on the radio.

Sarah McLachlins beautiful Christmas album “Wintersong
“ not a bad track on it though I,m particularly fond of the First Noel/Mary Mary which has a distinct Middle Eastern twist. The other album that I always play is Thea Gilmore,s Strange Communion that has my favourite Wintersong Sol Invictus .
Well worth listening to .

I’ve narrowed my favourites down to four, they’re in no particular order of enjoyment
1) Fairytale of New York, The Pogues and Kirsten MacColl
2) Santa Baby, Eartha Kitt
3) Last Christmas, Wham
4) Jingle Bell Rock, Bobby Helms
And if I had to pick an album, it would be Christmas in the Heart by Bob Dylan, of whom I’m not a great fan but I love the mix of songs and carols on it plus his voice is so un-schmaltzy.

Anything from the Moody Blues "December" album. Justin Hayward - I could listen to him forever ❤️

David Bowie and Bing Crosby singing „The little Drummer boy boy „

Mine too, their voices combined are magical.
Both lovely people.

I saw Chris de Burgh perform A Spaceman goes Travelling in 1975 when he was the support actor Gallagher & Lyle. I think at the Victoria Theatre in Stoke (I was at college at the time).

I haven’t seen anyone mention the Moody Blues for ages. I/we like them.

I like most genre whether religious or pop. “We’ve” had some really nice mo-town numbers that were new to me and some fifties do-wop versions on the play list in the shop -we actually got complimented the other day for the variety- and not overly intrusive either.
Not keen on a version by Kylie of “Santa Baby” though, it’s not a patch on Eartha Kitt. Kylies voice is too thin for that

I prefer the upbeat light hearted rather than the “Last Christmas” broken heart type stuff and there’s one sung by XFactor winner Leona Lewis called “One More Sleep” makes me cringe 😬 all those vocal gymnastics…just no.
Bring on Wizard and Jona Lewie😊

“Baby it’s cold outside” now has connotations of coercion - apparently - and is on the norty step.

Oh Gawd! FRT2 is there anything left in this world that hasn’t apparently been sullied by a scuzzy subtext?
I would often hear this song on our kitchen radio as a tiny child and think well “just put a coat on”!🙄

Oh holy night is very definitely a Christmas Carol.

I still love Do they know it’s Christmas? by Bandaid.

Gizzy48 Mon 22-Dec-25 14:10:37

Stop the Cavalry
O Tannenbaum (a reminder that life carries on through the coldest times)
Mary’s Boy Child

and

Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

– but not, PLEASE NOT the sanitised version with Hang the Brightest Star Upon the Highest Bough! There are dozens of songs saying Here we all are, isn’t it nice. That one is about being forcibly separated at Christmas and just hoping, one day, we’ll be together, but “until then we’ll have to muddle through somehow”. That’s what the song is all about, and changing the words to get rid of that sentiment is just shallow. I walk out of shops when I hear them play that version!

BeneathTheHowlingStars Mon 22-Dec-25 14:15:37

Silver Bells by Jim Reeves is my favourite. I will happily listen to it any time of the year.

Frenchgalinspain Mon 22-Dec-25 14:16:36

We enjoy most of the classic Christmas songs however, sung by modern artists and groups.

One of our favourites is The Motown Christmas Story ..

Gizzy, I have a version of I'll be Home for Christmas by Josh Grogan in which his singing is interspersed with messages from servicemen and women to their friends and families who they will not see at Christmas. It's very humbling.

Crossstitchfan Mon 22-Dec-25 14:49:27

I love Christmas but I must be weird as I absolutely hate Christmas songs! There are only one or two I can tolerate. One is the above-mentioned one by David Bowie and Bing Crosby. (That could well be influenced by the fact I chatted to David for around 30 minutes back in 1989 and he was absolutely lovely).
I switch off when Slade start singing, and the same with Wham. I just wish there could be some new, more modern songs brought out at this time of year instead of the same-old, same-old stuff that we are force-fed with.

Bross Silent Night, beautiful!!
