Good morning from Malta where it’s still dark but a fine day is forecast with a high of 20°C.

Had a lovely day with DD3 and the boys yesterday. We took them to the interactive science museum where there’s so much for them to do we were there all day.

I’m up early as DD3 goes back to school today but the boys don’t start until tomorrow so I have them today.

I’m out of the habit of waking early so feel tired already.😴

Take care Mick, the cold air won’t do you any good.

Hoping you all have a good day.🤗

12th Night - Epiphany and the visit of the Wise Men.
Good morning from a cold Bristol. It looks very frosty out out.
I didn’t have any problems with the pavements yesterday, when returning from the other village; it hasn’t been slippery under foot at all in this very cold weather.
I bought some grapefruit, lemons and limes at Tesco, so prepared the 3-fruit marmalade, and some lemon and lime marmalade as well. I shall finish today. I also need to bake - orange flavoured biscuits and coffee cake, I think.
I received compliments from three different sources for my cranberry marmalade, mine and piccalilli which made my day.
I’m always praying and thinking of the fgt family and, md. Also for the mountaineers - I hope their mountains are levelled.

Good morning Mick and everyone.
It's -1 here in Shropshire. More snow forecast today.
I should have been going out with my daughter this morning but I've sent her a message saying we'll go when the weather is better.
Yesterday I managed to move two book cases plus books. When I moved into this house a few weeks ago they were placed on the wrong wall in the study. I wasn't sure I could move them, but I did!! I'm pleased with the result.
This afternoon I have a National Women's Register meeting.
My thoughts are with those of you who are struggling with life's challenges. flowers

Grandmabatty Tue 06-Jan-26 06:04:34

Good morning all from Polmont where it's currently 0° and dry. Light snow is forecast. GrandMattie your marmalade sounds delicious. Unfortunately I can't take anything with grapefruit in it. Apparently you aren't allowed any if you are on certain medication. Bellasnana enjoy your day with the boys.
Yesterday I dropped off the boys at school/nursery but was like a geriatric tortoise because the pavements were treacherous and I have such bad feet nowadays. I pottered about the house until it was time to pick them up again. Dgs1 is a funny wee boy. He wanted to see videos on my phone of when he was little and then got upset because he wasn't a baby any more.
Today I'll repeat yesterday (only slightly later). I'll need a trip to Aldi to pick up paracetamol as I'm nearly out. Ashcombe it was you that has reminded me! Have a good day all.

Good morning from South Lanarkshire where there’s still a heavy frost but no snow yet.

I feel I’m becoming very slothful, winter affects my energy levels but I really must fight against the temptation to hibernate. It hasn’t been helped by the fact that I’ve been struggling with pain from my hernia since Christmas Day but it can be relieved by lying down and allowing gravity to work.

I’m forced to go out today as it’s my stint in the charity shop and I’ve other commitments this week so hopefully that will help me get out of the doldrums.

I really fancy some lemon and lime marmalade now gM. grin

Wishing everyone the best day possible.

Good morning from a dark and nippy north yorkshire.
Looks like the period of gorgeous winter weather has come to an end. I've really enjoyed my walks in the crispy, cold sunshine every morning instead of drizzle or pelting rain. I'm so very lucky living where I do in between the Dales and the n.york moors. Fantastic scenery and nature all around and the coast only a hop and a skip of a drive. I'll have to get myself off to Saltburn or Staithes again for a good old beach walk soon. I've hibernated too long and got out of the habit of just setting off and seeing where I get to.
I just realized this is how we let ourselves get old! My life has been turned rather upside down this year so it's time to take charge again and start enjoying it. I'll try and contribute a bit more on here too. I've lurked here for a couple of months but really enjoyed your company.
I do think it's motivated me to get off my arse! So thank you.

Greyduster Tue 06-Jan-26 06:22:20

Good morning Michael and all GNs from a very cold South Yorkshire where it is -4 outside and the temperature inside the house is as low as I have known it so the boiler is going to have to work hard this morning.
It’s the first day of the new term and I am due to be in school today but they often don’t need me on the first day back so I will ring and ask. I shalln’t need much of an excuse not to go out today. Plenty to do indoors.

Have the best day you can folks.

RosesandLilac Tue 06-Jan-26 06:25:59

Good morning, it’s very cold and icy here in south Glos. We had about an inch of snow, nothing melted yesterday and now it -6° . Thank goodness for the YakTrax that arrived on Sunday, the difference it makes to walking on ice and snow is astounding. I wish I’d bought some years ago.
I really enjoyed our early dog walk yesterday, beautiful sunshine and no wind. The dogs love the snow, they don’t seem to feel the cold.
Best wishes to all 🌹

GillyMo Tue 06-Jan-26 06:28:59

Good morning from Kent where it is minus four. I haven't looked out of the window yet; it seems very dark.
I'm another who thinks grandmattie marmalade sounds delicious. I crave citrus fruits in the winter.
I had some small tomatoes yesterday. They were insanely expensive. I grow my own and eat them daily during their growing season so I really miss them at this time of year.
Yesterday's morning walk was lovely. When I opened the door and breathed in the fresh, cool air it made me feel energised so I went to the gym yesterday afternoon. Just did a gentle session on a bike. It was very busy with some new faces. I expect a lot of people have made new year resolutions to get fitter.
I don't have a plan today, I'll see how my mood takes me.
Wishing all a peaceful day.

NannyJan53 Tue 06-Jan-26 06:32:13

Good morning from a very cold and snowy Black Country.

All activities cancelled yesterday, morning walk and afternoon Line Dancing. I was planning to go on a 7 mile organised walk today, but that has been cancelled too, postponed until next Tuesday.

I need to go to Mums to take her some ready meals for the freezer, so will be going on the bus, as it is lethal on our estate road at the moment, especially as we are on a hill. Main roads seem ok.

Someone from the Care company wants me to sign paperwork, they are coming at 1pm so need to be over to Mums before then.

Wishing you all the best day possible. Thinking of FGT's

Melanie61 Tue 06-Jan-26 06:34:17

Not even peeped at the weather yet. I’m too comfy with my tea in bed.

We are supposed to be going to a cottage 3 miles north of Scarborough on Thursday for a few days.
I am concerned about the weather conditions though. The cottage is a bit remote and I don’t know if we will be able to get access! I will message the owner today.

Is there anyone out that way that could advise just how bad it is.
I don’t mind the cold but I feel it’s a bit reckless driving there if it’s really bad.

Take care everyone flowers

karmalady Tue 06-Jan-26 06:37:50

Good morning from s somerset, it is still -5 on my weather station

I won`t be going out today, too many slippery areas around here and they stayed white all day yesterday. I did wear boots with decent grips while walking to craft group but was very careful. It was wonderful to meet and chat, it was about half attendance and more than I expected, we had so much to chat about. I do love being with these women.

My new and first garmin watch is showing interesting readings, especially my sleep pattern. It seems that I had a good sleep last night but all I remember is waking up briefly a few times. Very reassuring to know that my REM sleep was so good, I had no idea

I am knitting all day again today, will finish and block the sleeve-less top for dil and start a new one with left over gansey wool, that will be for a dd for her birthday. They take a lot of knitting and take longer than expected

Have a good day

EkwaNimitee Tue 06-Jan-26 06:58:22

Good morning Mick and everyone from dry Carlisle where it is -2°C. No more snow.
Yesterday was a laundry and bathroom cleaning morning. In the afternoon, I re-arranged a holiday I'd changed my mind about and did some reading.
Today I need to go out, probably into town as the roads there will be gritted and the country one is unlikely to have been.
Back home, time to get the floors mopped and then a pottering day methinks. Though I must ring the tour company who have made a serious mistake with my booking.

Enjoy the day and keep warm I hope!

GrannyGravy13 Tue 06-Jan-26 06:59:02

Good morning from S E Essex, my phone tells me it’s -5° clear with heavy frost.

I have a chest X-Ray just after 9am, not looking forward to de-icing the car brrr!❄️

Better night of sleep, managed 5 hours, I know my body needs steroids at the moment, but it also needs sleep to help it heel, what a conundrum 🤷‍♀️

Thinking of our poorly morning friends (((hugs)))

And a warm welcome to our new friends 👏👏👏

madeleine45 Tue 06-Jan-26 07:15:43

Good morning Mick and all GN's on a bitterly cold, very dark morning in North Yorkshire. In fact it was so cold I woke up some time around 5am, and was too cold to go back to sleep. Consequently I am up and dressed with polar long johns on under warm trousers and very old cashmere jumper on, and only now just warming up.

Yesterday it was a bitter day too, but I had said that I would go to the computer course or rather it was about how to use and understand your smart phone. So cold I had to go in the car as firstly didnt think my buggy would be happy moving in such cold weather and secondly thought even with polar jacket on it was too cold for me. So the first effort had to be deicing car windows and clearing them properly. I do get annoyed by those idiotic drivers who only clear a small space in the front windscreen and the side windows are not touched at all. I dont like unnecessary rules but really do think that people should be fined on the spot for driving in such a selfish and dangerous way. There are enough hazards on such a morning without people making things worse.

Anyway got myself there, and carted my laptop and bag etc and struggled to get to the meeting room. Full of aches and pains and despite taking painkillers early , feeling rather wretched. I felt rather sorry for Nichola , who was running the class. There was an extra unexpected man joined us, and despite there only being 6 of us , between us we had different kinds of phones, which made it impossible to have 1 instruction for all, a woman who had very little idea about anything but did not want to learn about the controls, but just be shown how to do specific things, another woman who, despite not being up to date at all with things, kept offering this woman advice as to what to do - some of which was totally wrong - and the pair of them talking while Nichola was trying to explain something to everyone. By the end of the class I felt in that rather confused way you do on a first lesson, but had learned one or two new things, and a better way to do something.

Teaching myself , I know that however difficult the first lesson is, people do retain some knowledge, even if it is how little they understand, and if they do as they are asked and read the couple of pages of information she has provided and have a go at things, that they will have crystalized their understanding a little and will come in with more relevant questions. I suggested to her later that perhaps she might ask us to sit together as in those with Iphones in one part and those with Android in another part so that at least she will be able to direct groups of us , rather than having people mixed up and some talking across other people or getting confused by the different kinds of phone.

She looked shattered by the end of the morning, but I was at least able to tell her that I had learnt one or two things that were very useful already and that I was sure that the next lesson would be better . It certainly showed how much such a course was needed, as the overall thing that came across was that people were not up to date or on the ball regarding safety using their phones and also had learnt things piecemeal, so were fine with using their phones for one thing but did not understand how to control it ,even down to putting the sound up and down.

I felt too weary to do much and came home and did a few bits and pieces, but didnt tackle any more ironing, but that is going to be my first job for the day today, with the aim of actually emptying the basket completely and getting warmer in the process. I am planning to get some chicken out of the freezer and concoct either a casserole or a curry for this cold , horrible day, thus getting something made for dinner tonight, using up various vegetables, and getting some space in my stupidly small freezer. I dont think, by the sound of the weather forecast, and the feeling cold already , that going out will be on the cards, so must try and do some moving about, so it will have to be some dancing about to the music on radio 3. On new years day from Vienna I cut a pretty dash as I marched about to the Rodetsky March! At least this very domestic couple of days will let me catch up a bit with neglected jobs and in between am still trying to go through paperwork and be strict about throwing magazines and out of date things away.

I look forward to Jess and Debbie returning this week after the holiday. They will be able to turn my mattress over and reach up to areas I have difficulty getting to these days, and if I get round to it, I am also going to look at my kitchen cupboards and decide if there are more efficient and better ways to organise them, as I am less able to reach up high etc, so need the things I use the most to be at that mid level to be easy to get to. Having to bend or crouch down to look into the depths of my big store cupboard, is getting more difficult for me, and I have decided that I need to restore my kitchen book. Years ago when I was much fitter and more organised, I used to allow myself the princely sum of ten shillings a week - that is 50 pence to those of you who dont remember pre decimal - to buy any bargains , so I would watch out for things that I normally bought being at a reduced price in tinned stuff mostly and they went into the store cupboard. That meant I had the basics for several meals if money was tight and also in bad weather times I wouldnt need to go out, as in those days didnt have a car, so things like corned beef on offer would be there to make a good warming corned beef hash, useful when unexpected rugby players came back after the match!!

So I kept a small notebook with lists of what was in the cupboard crossing off tins as I used them. This was useful to see what was used up and what seemed to rarely get used. Now I will still have my various tinned stores etc, like tuna and chinese ingredients and curry and bolognaise sauces for days I cant stand and make my own. But need to reorganise it so that I have the whole variety of tins available on the higher shelf that I can easily reach and the rest of the stores on the bottom shelf, but now I will be able to see what I have used and ask Jess to bend down and reach things up to the higher shelf. It feels a bit like giving in, but I need to see it as just being sensible and having what I want to hand. Oh I will be champing at the bit to get out and about after these necessary but boring days.!! Such virtuous use of time is not really like me. Ah well I have thursday to look forward to , which is our delayed christmas lunch, so will get out and see a few people if nothing else.

Glad to hear the medical things went well Mick, take care on the roads wont you. Bella , oh for a Tardis to transport myself to your much warmer clime today, Your posts are certainly a good advert for coming to Malta in our winter time!GrandMattie your kitchen will smell lovely with the marmalade. I used to love going to the algarve in february and collecting loads of lemons and oranges. I once gave quite a big pancake party with lemons and oranges in a cut glass dish as the centre piece. I love that smell of lemons and for a while grew a lemon tree here in england using my greenhouse to keep it going in the winter, and loved the fact that you got flowers and fruit at the same time. Aldom , good to see that you are settling into your new home and it is satisfying when you get a job done that you need doing, and it makes your new place more like home for each thing that gets put in its right place. Grandmabatty I was on some medication for a time and wasnt allowed to have grapefruit then. I really missed it and was glad when I had a change of medication and was able to go back to my grapefruit. Baubles take care when you go out wont you.

Wishing everyone a safe and pleasant day. May you all keep warm in this horrible weather and have a positive day, getting something that needs doing sorted.

Good morning everyone from mid Essex , my garden thermometer says it’s -6 outside. I had to post some important letters yesterday and was intending to walk to the post office. As I was just going out, my next door neighbour was getting into her car to also go to the post office. She gave me a lift there and back, I was quite relieved as I wasn’t sure how icy the pavements were in the village.
I’ll visit my dementia friend this afternoon, but as she is only 3 houses along the road I should be ok. The pavements are clear outside our houses as the road is gritted.
kittylester I hope you had a good birthday yesterday and that your operation goes well today.
I love lime marmalade grandmattie, but rarely buy it.

Safe travels to those on the move today, take care!

Thinking of those who are suffering in any way, and hope the day brings some relief for you.

Welcome to our new friends, I look forward to reading your news.

Have as a day as possible everyone, keep warm and safe.

Sar53 Tue 06-Jan-26 07:23:35

Good morning from the Essex coast where it is very cold and frosty.
I'm not feeling too good, a very nasty cough, maybe a chest infection. I'll give it a couple of days and if no better will try and see a doctor.
I will not be going anywhere today but have plenty indoors to keep me busy.
Welcome to anyone who is new on this lovely gentle thread.
I wish you all a good day xx

Gagagran Tue 06-Jan-26 07:32:13

Good Morning everyone from an even colder south coast. We must have a frost pocket in our N.E facing rear garden as the temperature was minus 7.2 on the weather station at 6.30am Coldest it's been since we moved here in 2012.

Our harbour was frozen over yesterday and shown on the local TV news channel . Of course the window cleaner cancelled his proposed visit and said he'll come today. Bet he doesn't!

So, hunkering down continues for me although DH did some more garden tidying yesterday and said it was warm in the sun. We have such different internal thermostats and he is in shirt sleeves indoors while I am in layers!

Like others on this thread, I am thinking of FGTs and MD especially, as they endure this difficult time in their lives. Really hope that they, and others suffering on their own mountain find some respite and ease.

cornergran Tue 06-Jan-26 07:36:21

Morning Mick, morning All from a cold, frosty corner of Somerset.

Yesterday’s highlight was a trip to the tip, today’s will be a dry haircut at the unreasonably early time of 9am. Only the end of the road, a flat walk. A pottering, cleaning day other than that.

A very reassuring message from our boiler man yesterday. He’s prioritising those with no heating, fair enough. He’s pretty sure ours will limp on, no it won’t blow up (he knows me!) , he’ll be here as soon as he can, immediately if it stops working. He’s been servicing the boiler for years, his Nan was our neighbour.

Best wishes to all. Stay safe and warm everyone.

Good morning from a very frosty Leicestershire.

The physio came yesterday and DH managed a couple of stairs. They are going to get him a trolley so he can carry stuff around and be even more independent.

I should be taking the car into the garage for a recall this morning but our roads look lethal.

Wishing everyone the best day possible.

Marzipan22 Tue 06-Jan-26 07:53:18

Can't post what I wanted to send, with photos, for some reason. Will try again tomorrow. Mild here in Cornwall.

Good morning from chilly Shropshire.

We had a lovely day with DGS1 yesterday. He had received some little figures for Christmas and was making little films with them moving their legs so they looked like they were walking.Grandpa was his prop man and assistant and I was just needed to watch the completed films. He created some really good stories using Lego and other toys as well as the sleeping dog!I did worry most of the day as there had been snow and I was stressing about getting home safely. As it turned out the worst roads were DD’s and the road we turn into just before we get home. Our road was surprisingly clear although the garden is still covered in snow.

Our snow forecast for today has been changed to rain which is usually the case when I have a hair appointment as I have today.

Like others FGT and himself are never far from my thoughts🙏🏻along with Marydoll and others who are struggling.

Wishing everyone the best day possible🦩🌻

ginny Tue 06-Jan-26 08:01:16

Good morning from N. Bucks, -4 at the moment. Luckily no extra snow overnight.
Not too much planned for today. I must post a birthday card and put a repeat prescription in. Otherwise I’ll be keeping warm indoors with some artwork .choir starts again this evening, luckily I only have to go down the road, less than half a mile. Looking forward to learning some new songs.
Stay warm and safe and I wish you the all a good day.

GrannyIvy Tue 06-Jan-26 08:02:34

Good morning from -5 Cambridgeshire. Wondering whether to walk this morning or stay in. I have the school pick up to do later as the little ones are back to school today and hoping both schools will be open.

DD2 had received some complimentary tickets to the Panto in Milton Keynes but it is a good hours journey for us and due to weather conditions I think we may give it a miss especially as it will mean a late night for the little ones on a school night.

Stay safe and warm everyone and have the best day possible
