I haven’t slept for more than 5 hours in a night since my first child was born in 1982. Now at the age of 68 I usually wake at about 2.30 and very rarely drop off again. I do read, lie awake and worry about everything happening in my sad life, but I’ve accepted the fact that this is me, I will probably never get 7 hours again. I try not to read the warnings about lack of good sleep and the association with unwanted diseases as that winds me up even more. So, I will just accept that I am short of good sleep, look after myself as best I can and not take too much notice of scary newspaper and magazine articles.

I shouldn’t worry too much about it Jazziesmum. My MiL was always a very bad sleeper but she was as tough as old boots and lived into her nineties. I don’t remember her ever being ill or tired.

Wide awake at 2.45 am. That was it for the night.

I read somewhere Magnesium is good for sleep. It’s on my shopping list…

I take magnesium from an online company called British Supplements.

No nasty fillers or additives 👍🏻

Morning everyone. Been awake since just after 12. My own fault as I had a large glass of squash before bed.

Mollygo Tue 03-Feb-26 02:12:03

Well it’s not a good night tonight. Couldn’t get to sleep and now it’s after two and I’m awake again. Let’s hope milk and a book will help.

Moth62 Tue 03-Feb-26 02:40:04

I did what I sometimes do and slept deeply for about an hour and then, ping, wide awake for hours going over stuff in my head. So have left DH snoring and come downstairs for a mug of hot milk.

LadyGaGa Tue 03-Feb-26 02:42:45

Hello. Glad I’m not the only one. Wide awake as usual. Once I get to sleep I’m ok, but it’s dropping off that’s hard for me. My mind is like a rolling piece of film that I just can’t shut off. I’ve tried everything under the sun. I know I should really get up for a while but I really don’t want to go downstairs where it’s cold, so I’ll read and give it a bit longer. This happens more often than not, but I guess it’s just something I need to accept - it’s not as though I have to get up for work. Good luck night owls!

cornergran Tue 03-Feb-26 02:54:36

After several decent nights I’m having a ‘waking night’. I’m more fortunate than many in that it isn’t every night now, used to be though so I do understand. I think I’ll make a cuppa, visit the bathroom and settle back down, wait and see. A book on my iPad is my saviour during these nights. If I don’t drift off I’ll be reading, not a bad way to spend a few dark hours. Best wishes to all night owls.

Oh, dear. I’ve just finished off the tube of Pringles… hmm

Doodledog Tue 03-Feb-26 03:31:56

I fell asleep at about midnight, but woke up again an hour ago and can’t get back to sleep. It’s so frustrating. I have to get up and out of the house this morning, and have a long ‘to do’ list after being ill last week. I’m going to be running on empty. I’ve played a hypnosis track, which was relaxing, but didn’t send me to sleep. I had a long bath before bed, used scented oils in the bedroom, but nothing worked. I don’t know what to try next.

crazyH Tue 03-Feb-26 03:52:01

Same here - dozed off earlier - wide awake - just can’t get back to sleep.

Doodledog Tue 03-Feb-26 03:53:26

Infuriating, isn’t it? You have my sympathy, for what that’s worth.

crazyH Tue 03-Feb-26 03:55:26

And 2 of my fingers are hurting - carpal tunnel syndrome 😫 - why is it called a syndrome I wonder 🤔

crazyH Tue 03-Feb-26 03:57:10

Thanks Doodledog

Doodledog Tue 03-Feb-26 03:57:18

I’m not going to start considering that one, or I’ll be awake all night grin

crazyH Tue 03-Feb-26 04:06:54

😂

grandMattie Tue 03-Feb-26 04:40:04

Hello. LGG! I have the opposite problem. Falling asleep is very easy, it’s staying asleep which I can’t seem to do.
crazyH, carpel tunnel is not a disease but causes problems same as , say, Asperger’s…
Awake now. Had a better night. I think not having a nap helps, although I’m in bed not long after 9 pm? I do read and think before switching the light out - physically and metaphorically 😆🤩

BlueBelle Tue 03-Feb-26 04:53:04

Morning all 12 midnight till quarter to 5 so I ve had my 5 hours and feel pretty ok off to work at 8, work days are my happy days
Have a good day everyone

HelterSkelter1 Tue 03-Feb-26 05:11:57

Not a bad night. Quiet dreams which I can't remember. I wish I knew what I did differently which results in a better night. My worries haven't gone away. Nothing different. I fell asleep reading quite early and then woke briefly to take my glasses off and put my book on the table.
If you can say BlueBelle what work do you do? The age span on Gransnet is so wide I always think everyone is my age 77 or older, but that's not the case.

JamesandJon33 Tue 03-Feb-26 05:30:05

I did go back to sleep for an hour I think ,but been awake for sometime now. As you saycornergran awaking night.

Esmay Tue 03-Feb-26 10:42:28

It's a relief to find that I'm not the only one with this problem.
It began two years ago.
I slept well up until then.

I tend to fall asleep in the early part of the evening and then ,wake up at one, three and five.
Sometimes it's a fit of coughing /asthma or my bladder or nightmares.

I'm trying to sort it out.

I did a long walk yesterday, but had an extremely restless night.

JamesandJon33 Tue 03-Feb-26 13:04:14

Esmay I have been trying to sort it out for ages. I can find no common denominator as to why I sleep reasonably well one night and not another. It isn’t exercise , or the amount I’ve drunk or even what I’ve eaten. A real puzzle,

MayBee70 Tue 03-Feb-26 17:04:27

Bit worried about what happened last night. I’ve always been a light sleeper and wake up at the slightest sound. My partner comes round in the evening and watches tv here. I’ve recently started nodding off on the sofa after I’ve had my tea. Leave the door unlocked because it’s pretty safe round here. But last night I woke up just as University Challenge was starting and realised he’d let himself in, must have shouted hello, would have spoken to the dog and searched for the remote control. And I was dead to the world.
