She was a regular on here. I've noticed her absence, I hope she's feeling ok ๐Ÿ’.

If GN were to announce that a member had been banned can you imagine the furore.
The thread/threads would be shut down immediately.
I know im repeating myself again but itโ€™s worth repeating.
If you are online friends with another member exchange email addresses

Maremia Sun 05-Apr-26 10:18:51

That is a good idea petra.

It makes you think of kids being put into detention this banning thing. I hope Cariad is ok,too.

It used to be known as the Norty Corner.

Some posters do return under different names; however, their style is usually unmistakable.

Perhaps CariadAgain will do the same and I imagine we'd soon realise ๐Ÿ˜€

I do miss biglouis. She was a voice for her generation.

I do remember the furore a few years ago when four members were banned; it was acknowledged and there were some grounds for it. There was a campaign and as far as I am aware those who wished to return were eventually allowed back.
It is still sad when people vanish without apparent reason.

As far as I remember, there were no real grounds because the person who managed to get them banned turned out to be a rather convincing troll who fooled many posters.

Yes it is sad when a familiar name suddenly disappears without saying goodbye.
Even if you scroll past their postss, which I did with Cariadagain and Biglouis and I expect they scrolled past mine, I dont want to think of them ill.
Good idea if you know you are taking a break or leaving, to say so. If you are able to.

butterandjam Sun 05-Apr-26 11:19:10

Clearly an unwell woman. Given her mentions of self -medication + rejection of medical experts , it would not be surprising if things went down hill .

LemonJam Sun 05-Apr-26 11:24:44

We are all so different - the world, and Gransnet would be very different if we were all the same.

I hope it is the case that CariadAgain is on a break for her own reasons, rather than any alternative sad reason. If not well- I hope CraiafAgain feels better soon.

I noticed that Cariadagain had disappeared a while ago, but don't remember an incident that would explain a banning. Having said that, bannings and suspensions on here have operated on a system that passeth all understanding in the several years I have been posting.

It's a shame, as we do have a community here, however rickety it sometimes feels, and if someone were in need for some reason I do get the impression that posters would rally round if we could. When we don't know what has happened or why it makes that difficult - in fact impossible.

I'm not sure there is an easy solution, as obviously HQ has to protect GN from prosecution if posters break the law, but someone being a bit of a pain is not illegal, and on the whole other posters can scroll past if they find someone's posts too annoying. Maybe an ignore button would be the answer? That would mean that there was no need to complain about anyone - we could just switch them off.

Failing that (and it's probably about as likely to happen as the fabled edit button) then instead of removing the PM facility altogether, maybe a form of 'Out Of Office' message could be on there. Either one that posters could set, saying they are away for X weeks, with or without a reason, or one from HQ saying that they won't be returning, or that they are away until X date in the event of a suspension. That way, we would know the score if we missed someone, and there would be no need for an announcement to the world at large on the boards.

I understand that HQ can't respond to requests to have people reinstated, as some posters are more 'noticeable' than others, so get more requests to bring them back. Also some have more vociferous friends, so it could never be fair to bring back some and not others because of requests. But equally, relying on reports from the ranks and banning people as a result of those reports is never going to be a fair system either. Some people never report, and others seem to do so as soon as someone disagrees with them, so being reported is always going to be an arbitrary thing. People have different tolerances, too - what is offensive to some is not to others, so much also depends on who is reading which threads.

This board does seem to ban more people than most, and at the same time it is one of the more moderate ones. Maybe the former leads to the latter, but at the same time, it means that a lot of our more 'interesting' members are lost, which is a shame.

Oh definitely, I recognised her from her MoneySavingExpert forum days with the very first post I read!

Doodledog Sun 05-Apr-26 14:51:30

She does/did(?) have a very . . . specific way of posting ๐Ÿ˜€

Oreo Sun 05-Apr-26 15:02:19

Posters often donโ€™t seem to understand that reporting doesnโ€™t automatically cause deletions or banning.
If someone reports a poster merely โ€˜cos they disagree with them that wonโ€™t mean a deleted post. The mods on any forum have to agree that it needs to be removed for a good reason.
Sometimes posters vanish for a while or for good if they find a forum they prefer.

dalrymple23 Sun 05-Apr-26 15:08:49

I was just about to post the same message. Glad it's not just me who misses some GNs.

Doodledog Sun 05-Apr-26 15:41:21

I think we understand that - of course we do. But some posters report more than others (including those who never post), and that will bring the people they report to the attention of HQ.

And of course posters can take time out for whatever reason they choose. The point people are making, though, is that we don't know what has happened as we are not told when people are unable to do so themselves.

BlueBelle Sun 05-Apr-26 15:55:06

What does Big Louis being a voice of her generation mean ? Arenโ€™t we all in a similar generation !!!
Big Louis was not a well lady

Maremia Sun 05-Apr-26 16:13:14

BigLouis told us she was unwell.

Maybe not banned, just temporarily suspended as can happen.

I'm sometimes puzzled by what is and what isn't banned because it doesn't seem quite consistent. I can only assume some decisions are taken because of comments being reported by numbers of people - but don't know if that is the case.

Unless a poster is breaking the law, I'm sort of in the camp that would rather the posts remain, even those that might ruffle my delicate feathers grin.

So if there's no way of contacting CariadAgain - there's no way of knowing if she's OK, which is a shame.

Same here, Dickens.

Cariad is a good writer and we need her.

The level of safety consciousness at Gransnet Admin is on the high side of the spectrum.

I agree with you Doodledog. Some on here are elderly, with health problems and, regardless of whether or not we've crossed swords with anyone, I think, given those circumstances, it's a shame that there is no way of knowing if they're OK - and if anyone on here can help - or whether they've been banned.

CariadAgain is not my favourite member of GN, but as you say - we are a community and, if the chips are down, it's a leveller and I believe most of us would like to help - even if it's only via a few solicitous words. I think there's a few of us who've experienced various health problems, and that's where grans can really help with advice, etc.

I assume that if a member has been banned - their PM facility is also removed?

ViceVersa Sun 05-Apr-26 19:26:36

Do you think some people are a bit 'trigger happy' when it comes to reporting posts? I don't know - I've only ever reported the very obvious scam posts.

AGAA4 Sun 05-Apr-26 19:44:13

growstuff hasn't been around. She was reported quite a lot at one time by I think maybe the same poster. I think she was banned.

... it has been said!

Possibly - maybe it's inevitable?

I have, on occasions, sat and steamed over a comment - especially if it's one that's snarky and directed at me, but I'm pleased to be able to say - I've never reported one. Not least because I know I've been quite cutting, or a bit of a smart-arse at times... so really I take the attitude that there's sometimes going to be heat in the kitchen and if it's too much, the best thing is to butt out and go do something constructive.

Anyway, I hope there's no health reason why CariadAgain isn't posting and that she's just taking a break. I've had a very rough past few months, emotionally and physically and GN has been a positive distraction for me when I've been feeling low, there's some very interesting topics and debates and, as I now spend a lot of time alone, GN is a way of communicating with the outside world.
