Are you irritating in RL? (light hearted)

I notice I have started to say "Wow", more or less every time somebody tells me something.

" My daughter works in London" Wow, really?
"I've done 2 Pilates classes this week" Wow, amazing

This must be very irritating for others.

Well "tophole" could be revived.

"glad to hear it" is quite benign in the right context?

but of course we irritate each other. My family is confusing. My sis happily munches away in a phone call, whilst DS reproves me, but is quite happy to clatter pots and pans.
One has to get to know The rules.

ps, it is on trend to say "cool" to Da Youf.
And = gasp - yes - "fab"

I think that most of us say something to indicate a response.

I'm guilty of saying-really , super or great .

I have to laugh when it's obvious that someone hasn't listened to a word that you've said and they ask you about the subject !

Fallingstar Wed 06-May-26 17:15:49

Well I must be irritating I imagine but am not sure what RL stands for, sorry if someone already asked, I imagine that is irritating in itself. 🧐

RL =real life

I am constantly rearranging furniture in my home.Fortunately I live alone so only me to irritate!

boheminan Wed 06-May-26 18:16:43

'Blimey' and 'Hey Ho'! person here and I find it irritating when anyone says 'Ah Bless'! to me - feels patronising.

Oreo Wed 06-May-26 18:28:46

Am not sure what I say, must listen to myself the next time I chat with somebody in RL 😄

merlotgran Wed 06-May-26 18:33:22

Aveline

Is it not 'Jings, crivvens, help ma' Bob'?
Sorry. Just being pedantic

Please translate. 🤔🤔😂

MawsRosie Wed 06-May-26 18:33:52

‘Have I told you this already?’ Is what I find myself (and dread) saying all too often 😱

Mum always says that the joys of being elderly is that not only can you tell people anecdotes that you don’t remember saying before but that the listeners themselves have forgotten that you’ve told them before😂

You need a "Glazeometer". Check the eyes...are they glazing over?

Fellow sufferer.

I often find myself laughing at something I have said. Trying to stop that.
Could never start saying ‘wow’. Reminds me of a tasteless joke involving tattooing a ‘w’ either side of an orifice.

Wyllow3 ’Well "tophole" could be revived.‘

We used to flat share with someone whose response was ‘Oh my hat’. In extreme circumstances it was upgraded to ‘Oh my top hat’.

I’m more down to earth - usually an ‘oh my goodness’ or ‘that takes the biscuit’. Rather pithier responses are kept inside my head (usually).

My DD says my most irritating habit is wanting to wash up the cooking pans before eating. It takes me very few minutes and I do it while people are helping themselves from serving dishes so I don’t really see the problem, but it grates with her.

TheSunRisesInTheEast Wed 06-May-26 20:45:29

Wow, brilliant, lovely, really?

Some of my responses to people's news. Usually I'm not really interested, will forget all the details of the conversation, and will be trying to get away to do something else as I'm always busy.

That's why I like GN, I can pop in and out as time allows, join in or not, leave when I've had enough and don't have to listen if something doesn't interest me 😉.

I'm a fidget, sneeze a lot and quite loudly, tap my fingers without realising - yes probably very irritating. My Mum used to try & correct me but I've realised over the years that she's as bad as me at fidgetting, huffing, tutting etc

Avaline yes!
On occasion variation thereof and sometimes help ma'bunnet

I have to have the temperature of a room "just right". Else cant get to sleep or stay asleep.

Trouble is now, I have a skin condition, and the same is applying to day time as well.

Poor DH has to either say he is too cold or too hot.
But he knows I will suffer even more if the room temperature is "wrong".

This is rather outing.
But I would rather that if someone else can cure my skin condition.

izzibear Thu 07-May-26 13:42:22

Very amusing reading all these! I also Wow a fair bit and say Cool (just waiting for a young person to tell me i'm too old for that but I reckon it's done the rounds from the 60s when I was born and is now back again so I'm allowed!).

As for pedant... guilty as charged 😀

knspol Thu 07-May-26 13:43:57

Wow, good grief, crikey, they all just trip off my tongue.

Thank you so much. Didn't like to ask.
Catch myself saying 'Wow' every now and again but wish i didn't.
Cringe at 'Brill'

Samsara1 Thu 07-May-26 14:01:46

Me too 'wowing' everything.

cookiemonster66 Thu 07-May-26 14:04:54

everything I say and do annoys people, I honestly do not know why, so I just keep my mouth shut now

GoldenAge Thu 07-May-26 14:17:13

"Really?!" accompanied by wide eyes, upward intonation and a smile.
"Wow" reserved for small human beings as an attempt to be at their level.
Many years ago I did use "golly" but realised when on very early Diversity training that this was insulting. I worked hard to re-train the habit and for that reason never used 'gosh' as I was afraid I'd slip into the old way.
In a bad context "yikes" or "eek" - old comic days I'm afraid.

leeds22 Thu 07-May-26 14:18:23

I've noticed that I'm now saying 'Gosh' quite frequently. Don't know why.

Nanny27 Thu 07-May-26 14:21:12

Trying hard not to laugh at Diversity Training programme that includes the word 'golly' as insulting in that context.
