But who looks at a signature? Years ago you were supposed to check, but not necessary now.

We used to buy records.
Then we moved on to audio tapes.
Then discs.
Now it is bougie to go vinyl again.
Fads evolve, then go retro.
Could also happen with cash.

I think all those journalists who pontificate on what is a sign of old age etc might be quite surprised to find out how many of these indicators of age their contemporaries actually use.

For many years I have banked online using a card reader, which I have always seen as being a sure sign of age. Until yesterday.

I was complaining to DD about problems I was having with another bank account, Her immediate response was 'get a card reader'. Now DD works at the cutting edge of banking security technology and does not trust banking apps on her phone and only has a small feeder account on it which never has more than a couple of £s hundreds in it. The rest of her banking is done with a card reader.

My father was of the generation of men who thought that purses were just for women. He carried change loose in his pocket. He did have one of those folders for notes. Having said that, he was a very early user of a credit card, so maybe he did have a wallet at some stage.

So not having a purse might even be a sign of being "older than old".

Only carry folded up notes in my phone wallet, always like to carry some cash.

Where we live there are so many places where we require £1 coins. Supermarket trolleys, short term parking machines that do not accept cards. Even our local fish and chip shop is cash only.

I most definitely have purse(s). My main one is quite large, and carries cash, and many store cards, etc. When I shop locally, I nearly always prefer to pay by cash.
Shopping on line, or for very large items get paid by credit card (paid off by DD each month).
I do feel it is important that we retain cash.

Yes, same. We also buy our eggs (and sometimes other produce or things like jam, honey etc) from a couple of little smallholdings near us. Both have honesty boxes for cash - one does take bank transfer payments by phone, but I don't have a banking app on my phone, so I always carry cash for that reason.

I like my banking apps, I do have two card readers that are a faff.
I can check my bank from the luxury of my bed.
I discovered on Friday that my bank card is missing, (I transferred from one bag to another, it will be in the house) so was able to freeze it temporarily until I’ve had a good look underneath my bed.
I keep small amount of cash in my safe & alway have cash as a back up in my purse.
Mainly spend half cash & rest on card. Purely to keep cash & cash machines going.

Awaiting delivery today of a new purse, bought from Radley in their closing down clearance. (Yes the genuine site, checked and double checked).
It’s beautiful apple green leather, it’s to replace my dog eared tired one that finally split.
I don’t care if I’m considered old, I prefer physical cards/cash rather than on my phone, but I’ll happily do online banking, like you MT62 usually from my bed!

I am 62 and only carry my phone and keys when I go out. I have apple wallet which stores all my cards and tickets. 😂

Well yesterday I walked behind a very pretty young girl, in a smart top and short shorts she’d be 19/20 she reached into her cross over bag and drew out a nice cream purse.

Sad to see Radley is closing down. I have a tan leather Radley bag and a purse actually both from a charity shop and I have used the cross body bag daily for a long time. The purse not so much as it is a little bulky.
Sad to see so many well known companies disappearing.

I can understand your concerns. However, I bank with Nationwide and I use a card reader, and by the second attempt to use it I got the hang of it.

Recently I went online with the TSB. They did not offer me a card reader, and while I understand the need for security, I found it so difficult to use with 6 or 7 bits of information I had to memorise and put in correctly that in three attempts, I failed to get into my account and had to get someone on a Help line to assist me. The result being that we are moving our TSB account to the Nationwide.

DD works in what is essentially cyber security in banking. and I was surprised to discover that she uses a card reader to access her account, but she also has a separate account with an online bank that never has more than £500 in it. When it gets too low, she just tops it up. That way, if anything happens to her phone or her bank, this bank account never has large sums of money in it, nor does she does she do any other banking with the company, so the worse that can happen is limited to what is in this current account.

I am not sure I am up to that yet, butI amworking onit.

I keep my purse in my handbag, (a nice seviceaboe one with lots of comparents, andade of nylon so it wipes down easily - in black, of course!) along with clean knickers, wet wipes, a list of medications, an emergency carrier bag etc etc.

I heard just the other day of a young relative who had absolutely everything on her phone - and lost it.

Based on that theory I must be ancient…..I have several purses! And actually, we have been saving our medication blister packs because Boots recycle those now and you can accrue points on the Advantage Card but it is such a blessed faff, can only be done a certain number of times per calendar month, you have to log in to Boots free WiFi in store, get a code from one place and then redeem the voucher within 5 MINUTES! Right pita! Not bothering again as it made me feel ten years older!!

Prescription meds and non-prescription meds and didn’t seem to matter where they were sourced either. Just a complete faff and not worth the brain strain!

You don't have to register! I couldn't be bothered with the faff, but DH does have quite a lot of blister packs (from the local pharmacy). We just save them up until we're in a town with a Boots, and just post them into the box in great handfuls (handsful?). It's good fun for those who enjoy bottle banks, and although you don't get the points on your Advantage card, you don't get the faff either.
