Yesterday, I went to our local Theatre, and spent two wonderful hours listening and taking in this woman’s extremely well educated thoughts on our humanity and world, and her extremely interesting and full life.

Bad language aside, and it doesn’t offend me, it was in context and it was, in the main, highly amusing.

What struck me the most, aside from how very eloquent and beautifully spoken she is, was her compassion and kindness and concern for the whole of humanity.

It wasn’t the show I was expecting, it was well thought out, yet not stifling or stuffy.

She was accompanied by Ed Byrne (Southern Irish Comedian) and most of the second half was audience questions, which she answered openly and honestly and with humour.

The first half ended with a request from her, to join her singing “Daisy, Daisy”, a song which reminds her of her mother and the second half ended with her reciting a piece from Shakespeare’s Little Dorrit.

I liked her before, I absolutely understand she’s not popular with many, but she spoke from the heart, with humanity, in some ways with humility, and with concern about her country, no longer being the United Kingdom, but the Divided Britain.

She urged us all to be neighbourly, to live and love with kindness, compassion and justice.

Yes, she can be rude and completely “un-PC”, and has few filters, but she was a thoroughly charming lady and we had a couple of hours of fun and amusement and came away a free hardback book and lots of thoughts to mull over.

As we left the theatre, after a drink, she was being picked up in a pretty normal but large car. She waved merrily to to us all. thanks

I have never found crude and vulgar ‘comedians’ the slightest bit funny and this awful woman is one of the worst examples.

Those who need to resort to vulgarity to get a laugh are not true comedians, in my opinion anyway.

But then we are all different as this thread has shown.

Exactly this. She is on the same level as the repulsive Jo Brand.

Whenever either of them appears on a TV show they completely take over, talk over people and try to shock. Who cares what those old duffers think about anything?

Cossy Mon 07-Sept-26 15:08:47

I think that it’s ok for anyone to find her “highly offensive” or even “foul”, “repulsive” and “vile”.

You do not need to go and see her, read her books or watch her films and tv programmes.

She won’t give a tinkers cuss, and, frankly neither do I.

Each to their own. thanks

Tbh I find her repulsive.

Me too. Her 'stories' about casual sexual activity with men she's met on the street (three in a day, apparently) are crude and not very credible. Her use of an old slave term to describe Andi Peters' skin colour was indefensible, and she's followed that up by talk about 'cripples'. metro.co.uk/2026/09/07/miriam-margolyes-speaks-backlash-describing-andi-peters-racist-term-29552358/

She goes way beyond 'accidentally' using the wrong vocabulary - who uses 'high yella', anyway? Apart from being obviously offensive, it's an American term, so not something she's likely to have known from childhood that 'slipped out'.

Her farting is performative and childish - I find her embarrassing and unfunny. I know people's sense of humour varies a lot, though, so that's just my opinion, and her sex life is her own business (although it seems to risk frightening the horses) but that her language was offensive goes beyond a matter of opinion, I think.

I have liked her in every acting role I’ve seen her in. Now I can’t stand her. Sorry Cossy, I agree with you on almost every other topic but not this one.

Realky Mon 07-Sept-26 16:52:19

She's hoping to earn a quick buck from her book by getting a lot of publicity from asking rudely, "Who are you?" to Andy and the Egyptian guy in Australia, and discussing the colour of their skin.

Luckygirl3 Mon 07-Sept-26 16:56:13

I have no problem with her.

She is a superb actress and speaks out bravely on some subjects that many Jews would avoid.
She is compassionate and has concern for others.

OK, she sometimes expresses herself in ways that some might not like, and sometimes there is too much information! But I am able to see past the language and defend her right to use it. It is not said aggressively.

JenniferEccles Mon 07-Sept-26 17:08:40

Oh yes I would defend her right to be vulgar rude and thoroughly unpleasant because I firmly believe in free speech.

Those who enjoy seeing and listening to people like her are equally free to defend her.

We are all different.

She's hoping to earn a quick buck from her book by getting a lot of publicity from asking rudely, "Who are you?" to Andy and the Egyptian guy in Australia, and discussing the colour of their skin.

This is her fourth book, it’s certainly not about book sales, we all received a “free” hardback copy of her book.

I totally understand why she’s not everyone’s cuppa.

She’s 85, speaks from her heart, I don’t think she passed wind on stage (& we were sitting very close to the stage) and tbf, whilst her three previous books are littered with “foul” language and her “naughty, saucy” deeds, this wasn’t every other word in her show.

What I mean is, she did swear, it was in context, it was rude, but her entire show wasn’t peppered with “Fs” and “Cs” and some of the stories she told were quite heartwarming, some were funny, some were quite sad.

It wasn’t a stand-up comedy show (she could barely stand up), she was seated in a comfy chair, next to Ed in a comfy chair, each with a table in front of them with water and a copy of her book, which Ed flicked through a bit and asked questions about.

Sounds completely bonkers to say this, but it was truly like having a bit of a chat, with a very larger than life character, with one of her mates in a very large, rather odd, front room.

I’ve seen loads of stand-ups and comedians live, this wasn’t stand- up.

I liked her, she’s lived an interesting life, she’s well educated, well travelled and actually quite eloquent and beautifully spoken.

I completely get why some cannot stand her, find her rude and overbearing. flowers

Like everyone she is a mix of attributes.
Her farting and somewhat far-fetched sexual exploits are one side of her.
Her superb acting and political courage and compassion are the other.

adrisco Mon 07-Sept-26 18:36:07

I like her. She says what she thinks, yes often rudely - but she is intelligent, compassionate and very kind.

An interesting highly intelligent , well educated woman .

I would have liked to have seen her myself, I'm sure she was very entertaining. I think she has a wonderful speaking voice.

Momac55 Tue 08-Sept-26 13:59:39

I cannot stand her I think she is a vile old crone

DrWatson Tue 08-Sept-26 14:01:48

For MarieElla, and that "Ireland is divided into N, S, E and West", well, yes, so is everywhere pretty much, though San Marino, Monaco, etc, haven't that much to divide/?

We'll be there in a few weeks, so can you please explain where the border controls are between West and South, we don't want to get delayed too much??

Beau1958 Tue 08-Sept-26 14:05:17

I love her. She’s intelligent, entertaining and says things we wouldn’t dare - good for her !

DrWatson Tue 08-Sept-26 14:08:51

Margolyes has an alter ego, the one who goes on chat shows and likes to offend and provoke. Hence she will liberally drop the 'F Bomb', also the 'C Bomb', and make thoroughly obnoxious remarks about racial background, as per the other day on ITV.

She also did just the same on Australian TV a few years ago, and of course apologised afterwards, claimed it was an innocent question -- and for ANYONE on here who claims she is NOT "racist" - DO let us know the last time she checked a WHITE presenter's heritage and background?

Yes, she can appear warm and cuddly, that's no excuse for the racist aspect. Oh, and as for "Jewish" -- a huge number of folk from that faith have criticised the Israeli Govt for their genocidal activities, MM is hardly alone in that.

cazzar1 Tue 08-Sept-26 14:28:06

It's a shame she alienates so many people with her rudeness.

ExaltedWombat Tue 08-Sept-26 14:28:08

I don’t think she’s evil. But she isn’t quite the National Treasure she thinks she is.

knspol Tue 08-Sept-26 14:36:34

Have always disliked her intensely until I read a recent article in one of the broadsheets and I did revise my opinion a lot but after her recent talk show moment with Andi Peters I'm back to disliking her again. It doesn't matter that she apologised the words she used were abominable and makes me wonder what she's like when in her own world and not out to try to impress or make money.
