Seems it’s now Harry’s uncle - the Earl of Spencer - having his turn at a “tell all” book.

Honestly why? What is the attraction this family have in airing their dirty laundry? It can’t be for money, he’s wealthy. He must think it’ll be cathartic like his nephew imagined it would be if he told us all “his truth”. More mud slinging. Talk about making a bad situation worse.

I was working for an Hiv/Aids charity at the time, I cant begin to say what a difference it made to some people. It is partly why I have a soft spot for her

TerriBull Mon 21-Sept-26 18:24:03

I also had a soft spot for Diana, she was a complex character whose difficult upbringing had some bearing on her disposition. I think she did a lot of good in her all too brief life I was very sad when she died. I think with the right partner her whole life could have had a different outcome. Her step mother was Barbara Cartland's daughter, surely Raine's mater could have woven a story around that event. Anyway, I shouldn't laugh really, but at the time I found it quite funny I think Diana was someone who had the devil in her certain scenarios. I like to think my step daughter wouldn't try that one on me shock I'll make sure she's not behind me going down the stairs, in case she has a Diana moment grin

Am I the only one who watched the interview and didn’t pay the slightest bit of attention to LK’s cleavage?

No I didn't and quite frankly, the photo GrannyGravy has shown says it all; there is no cleavage on display!

I agree. Diana was a trailblazer when AIDs became an awful pandemic with people refusing to go near sufferers and blaming the gay community. We forget how terrible it was. But Diana made a point of touching and hugging sufferers, educating many on how non contagious the disease was to those of us not exchanging bodily fluids.
And I recall her walking across minefields in certain war torn areas.
She may have been highly strung emotionally but there was undoubtedly a caring and kind side to her.

MayBee70 Mon 21-Sept-26 19:33:44

I was going to write and thank her for walking across that field. But I never got round to it; typical of me and I regret it to this day.

Fallingstar Mon 21-Sept-26 19:52:21

Just read up thread the debate about LKs cleavage.
Seriously???
Can’t we leave these petty judgements of women to misogynists who will never get the memo if women keep doing their job for them.

hollysteers Mon 21-Sept-26 23:11:41

From one source, it seems the “forgotten” remark was taken out of context. Charles’ reply to an angry estranged from his sister Charles S. was along the lines of “Diana will soon be forgotten if she’s anything like you” or similar.

I can’t remember where I read this…

Well ES has already had to apologise to Piers Morgan over one lie in Swan Song.

Smileless2012 Tue 22-Sept-26 16:41:26

hmm I wonder what else ES has incorrectly assumed.

ReturningFromExile Tue 22-Sept-26 18:56:27

ES mentions, according to the BBC website, that a boy who had accidentally shot and killed his father was nicknamed Baghdad. But that's a very old story!

Fallingstar Tue 22-Sept-26 19:02:44

It has been suggested that the books be taken off the shelves due to inconsistencies/lies that the Earl has I believe admitted to. The man can’t be taken seriously. I mean who will believe a word of his nonsense now.

MayBee70 Tue 22-Sept-26 19:25:57

Either way the book has been so heavily publicised that, even if things in it are proved to be incorrect, in years to come people will still probably be quoting them.

eazybee Tue 22-Sept-26 19:50:02

Sounds as though it was written in a rush, wonder if H was involved?

winterwhite Tue 22-Sept-26 20:47:45

These criticisms may deflate the tone of future publicity which can only be good.

25Avalon Tue 22-Sept-26 22:15:58

He’s apologised to Piers Morgan for provable untruths about him. Interesting to see if Morgan still sues. He is insisting the remarks about him should be removed from the book.

You’d think after The Salt Path publishers would be a bit more careful when publishing autobiographies of any kind.

When ES described how the news about Diana came to him over hours, I realised KC must have had the same experience . It was drip fed overnight, at first her injuries did not sound life threatening but as hours went by her condition worsened until she died in early morning.

How long and harrowing that night must have been to all, hearing her condition relayed from a hospital in Paris to Robert Fellowes, the Queens Private Secretary, husband of Diana's sister Jane, uncle of Harry and William. Robert and Jane were at Balmoral with the royal family , Charles and the boys. Jane phoned her brother C S in Slouth Africa.

Charles then had to inform his sons in the morning. What a horror to have to give your children such devastating news, out of the blue. After that, he called CS.

I imagine the shocking nights events and having to tell his children left KC knocked for six, stunned, reeling.

That's not "giddy" in the sense of "elated", high.

David49 Wed 23-Sept-26 06:13:02

Yes it's traumatic but not unusually, thousands of children and other relations are told of a parents death, it's not easy and always emotional. The glare of publicity makes it worse, dragging it all up decades later just to sell a book is unjustified.

MarieElla Wed 23-Sept-26 08:34:20

I think Charles S is a very nasty man to include that comment about KQ being giddy and elated. He was probably deeply shocked. I laughed when I heard my beloved Mum died, due to shock, not relief...because she died unexpectedly!

MarieElla Wed 23-Sept-26 08:35:48

When you receive a shock like news of a sudden death or a loved one’s terminal cancer diagnosis one of the hardest things to do is have to talk on the phone to friends and relatives.
You can have a conversation with a medical professional and remain calm and practical but it’s a different matter with family members, whether or not you get on with them.

Charles Spencer is an idiot if he thinks people will believe his version Prince Charles’ reaction.

Casdon Wed 23-Sept-26 09:38:27

I read the review online, I think the press have as usual honed in on the contentious issues, but it sounds as though the book is about much more than his take on Diana’s marriage and her death. I’m not a Diana fan myself, but if you are it is a detailed account of their childhood and other friendships as well. I’ve never read any books by Earl Spencer, so I’ve no idea if he is a good writer or not, or indeed if he employed a ghostwriter.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Wed 23-Sept-26 10:01:53

I imagine copies of the book will soon be in the charity shops or the ‘discount’ table in the book stores.

No-one can really know what goes on in a marriage except the couple themselves. Spencer will only know his sister's version of events. There are always two sides to a story.

Nor would he really understand the dynamics of his sister's friendships either.

David49 Wed 23-Sept-26 10:06:04

I had a lot of sympathy for Diana, unlike Catherine she was not well suited for the role, in addition she had an unfaithful husband, it must have been a miserable time for her.
