Seems it’s now Harry’s uncle - the Earl of Spencer - having his turn at a “tell all” book.

Honestly why? What is the attraction this family have in airing their dirty laundry? It can’t be for money, he’s wealthy. He must think it’ll be cathartic like his nephew imagined it would be if he told us all “his truth”. More mud slinging. Talk about making a bad situation worse.

A refreshing post, Iam64. It seems to me there is dysfunction on both sides and neither of them are paragons of virtue where their wives are concerned. I also think it is difficult to imagine how powerless the Spencer’s must have felt against the might of the Royal Institution at that time.

He refused one of the properties on the estate because of security issues eazybee and the one she wanted was already occupied. Alternatives were offered but rejected.

IMO the only reason for this book is to publicly vent his anger, bitterness and it appears hatred for the institute of the RF and for Charles in particular.

I think you're right Casdon and certainly hope that this will be taken with a large pinch of salt and that Charles will escape unscathed to fight another day.

I am not interested in taking sides particularly, although will admit to having a soft spot for Diana, but I cant help but notice a trend recently of men whose behaviour is lets just say less than great lecturing others on behaviour.

Agree with this.
This book is an ugly admission of one man’s hatred for another and does the Earl no favours.
But of course some members of the public will lap it up, which of course does them no favours either.

Charles Spencer to Diana:
There are farmhouses round here that may well not interfere with us but I cannot afford to give them rent-free, ...although I wish I could. In theory it would be lovely to help you out and I am sorry I can't do that. Victoria and I really value our privacy and the combined pressure of the Northants Police, neighbours and friends have definitely compromised that.
If you are really interested in renting a farmhouse, here or in Warwickshire or Northamptonshire, that would be wonderful.
Ummm.

ReturningFromExile Fri 18-Sept-26 09:48:56

Does he really mean he couldn't afford to give the farmhouses rent-free? He wasn't exactly on his uppers!

Casdon Fri 18-Sept-26 10:23:32

Neither was Diana. She left £21 million to William and Harry in her will.

Dontcallmelove Fri 18-Sept-26 10:36:19

Not RTFT, but I’m wondering if this is the reason Harry has returned now. His uncle dishing the dirt can only give affirmation to some of Harry’s accusations. Maybe he feels that will lead to acceptance from the public that have turned against him?

Smileless2012 Fri 18-Sept-26 10:42:10

There can never be affirmation for the lies that H & M have told and I would think that the so called 'revelations' may well make reconciliation with his father harder, and with other family members impossible.

So now Harry is responsible for his Uncle's revelations. Is there no end to this person's crimes! 🙄

Ilovepuffins Fri 18-Sept-26 11:42:28

Earl Spencer has criticised the newspapers and media and yet here he is using the very same to get across his nasty revenge.
I just feel so sorry for the King, Prince William and all of the working royals who do so much good for this country.
Would be interesting to know what the sisters Jane and Sarah really think about it all.

I can’t see that. Harry was twelve, he wasn’t a participant in the conversations between his father and uncle, and unless he’s very foolish he will keep right out of this particular skirmish. He won’t want to alienate either of them further, or add to rumours about his mother’s mental state.

Smileless2012 Fri 18-Sept-26 12:06:18

I'm referring to the lies during the Oprah interview and the lies in Spare icanhandthemback in response to Dontcallmelove's post.

No where have I said H is responsible for his uncles revelations; what a ridiculous thing to say.

Casdon Fri 18-Sept-26 12:13:42

Ah, it read as a separate point to me, related to the OP, sorry.

DollyD Fri 18-Sept-26 12:15:24

Hateful liar, is what think about Earl Spencer………..

Margs Fri 18-Sept-26 12:19:34

Earl Spencer is on his fourth marriage - the common denominator in his fractured relationships is HIM.

A nasty piece of work. Dragging up recriminations and far away, painful details (and half truths) after all this time?

His publisher must have made it worth his while. Does anyone know how large the advance was?

Smileless2012 Fri 18-Sept-26 12:20:05

No worries Casdon smile

I agree DollyD.

Smileless2012 Fri 18-Sept-26 12:21:51

It's not been publicly disclosed Margs.

Ms Moore continues:

“The palace’s put-down of Spencer was elegant (“the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory”) despite the fact that the King is said to be incandescent with anger.

But, really, what does Spencer hope to achieve?”

I have no idea who is telling the truth about whom, or what their motives are, and I'm tempted to say "a pox on both houses". But I've now seen so many comments about how elegant the palace's put-down was. It seemed very clumsy to me.

Replace one word and the statement remains true: “the pain of spousal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory". Charles effectively saying either, "my judgement can be coloured too" or "I have no grief".

Casdon Fri 18-Sept-26 12:45:15

Grief does take people in very different ways initially I think. What we don’t know was whether by the time Diana died, she was still irrational, or difficult about the children, whether Charles was in some part relieved because it would remove a lot of stress, or what her relationship with her brother was actually like and how much she shared with him. It’s all speculation.

On another note, I hope AnnieBach is okay, she normally comments on all the royal threads, but I haven’t seen her lately?

Galaxy Fri 18-Sept-26 12:53:23

Thats true Casdon now you mention it. Hope she is OK.
I would say that generally there are all sorts of reactions to grief, and that they are all ok. My brother and I were crying with laughter over a musunderstanding the day after my much loved mother died.

I occasionally wonder what exactly would have happened if Diana had converted to catholicism and tried to bring up the two boys as catholics. I know that, somehow, she never would have succeeded but one other side effect would be that AMW would still be second in line to the throne....

Smileless2012 Fri 18-Sept-26 12:57:54

But doesn't it cease to become speculation when it's portrayed as someone's 'truth' Casdon?

Good point about Annie who as you say normally posts on royal threads. Hope you're OK Annie.

Calendargirl Fri 18-Sept-26 13:01:21

I too have wondered why Anniebach hasn’t commented, as she usually does on anything ‘royal’.

Hope she’s ok.

Smileless2012 Fri 18-Sept-26 13:05:03

It wouldn't have made any difference Petrina William or Harry converted.
