Simply that - do you buy yourself a Christmas treat - if so what?

Can't agree more ...never get any except those I buy myself ....but just having had a big birthday an treated myself to perfume and some clothes, cannot think of anything I want for Christmas ......but I expect I shall find something ! Rather fancy a pair of floral boots but can't find any !!! angry

Sunseeker, I do what you do. I only have a couple of friends to buy for. So I treat myself, I always think, my brother would have bought me something nice, lovely bags and electrical things.

Our family only do Christmas presents for the children (saves a lot of stress) so we adults don't get anything. Consequently I feel quite at liberty to buy myself anything whenever I feel like it, as does DH although he is much more restrained than me.

Some of these responses made me feel so sad, I'm so very lucky to be spoilt by DH and my family, not just at Xmas. If I were on my own I would buy myself a back and shoulder massage, to feel the touch of another human being on my skin would be so vital to me.

Rolande flowers
Yes, mostly books (I love Miss Read too and the My Friend ... books for the dark January days when we need something cosy). My DH is a lovely man but not a good present chooser. wink

My dh and I started our own tradition (2nd marriage with grown up children) of treating ourselves to a relaxed day out together with afternoon tea somewhere special and spending as long as we like browsing in a bookshop and choosing ourselves several books each. No set number of books or price so we feel happy to be extravagant or not. The books then get wrapped and it's a second treat to open them on Christmas day.

Oh yes... how can you not when your out doing your Christmas shopping and come across all these lovely items.

Willow500 Mon 30-Oct-17 17:06:19

I don't as I buy quite enough during the year blush although that will stop after Christmas as I expect to be made redundant. My husband always says there's nothing he needs so I do try to buy him something nice and we still buy for family who also buy for us. Reading some of these I feel very lucky and hope that those of you on your own spoil yourselves as much as you want!

I don't buy myself Christmas or birthday presents but occasionally give myself treats. I have bought myself an advent calendar this year which is a little more expensive than the usual sort of things I like to treat myself to! I love flowers and occasionally buy some. I love scallops so treat myself to those from time to time. I have never been materialistic so never want "things" as such.

I think it's important to treat yourself if your life is not ideal.

I don't wait for Christmas and frequently buy myself a 'must have one of those' At my time of life why not ?Last week I was having a practical moment so decided it was to be a new kettle.

Tegan2 Mon 30-Oct-17 18:00:13

...yes, but not necessarily at Christmas...

radicalnan Mon 30-Oct-17 18:03:35

Shizam Mon 30-Oct-17 19:50:15

Teetime. Just done the same. Hobbs velvet dress that I hope I get to wear somewhere! Happy got 20% off. Just hope it fits my weird body that seems to be changing shape as I get older.

Every year we get invited to a local jeweller's Christmas bash - champagne buffet - and he shows off his beautiful jewellery. Fell in love with a pair of ear-rings last year, so treated myself. A couple of weeks later saw the matching necklace, so DH treated me for Christmas! Eagerly awaiting this year's invite.....

When my DU was in a care home he would instruct me to buy Christmas presents for all the family including myself, so I did, and I then wrapped and labelled them all, including the one to myself.

No I don’t do this, I’ve never thought about doing so and I’m so exhausted after shopping for everyone else I don’t think I would have the energy!

Beau Mon 30-Oct-17 21:32:01

Same as Breda - never thought of it and would never do it in a million years. If I needed something and could afford it I would just buy it at the time I saw it in the shop.

Cosafina Tue 31-Oct-17 20:04:35

Yes, always, because I never get given what I want even though I’ve provided a list of things I want or need (upon request, not if not asked, but I always am asked - so why not get me something off it??!! I alway include a range to suit any purse)

Smithy Tue 31-Oct-17 21:27:51

As someone said, it's the only way to get what you really want!

Blinko Wed 01-Nov-17 09:59:59

I thought I might 'get my colours done'. People say once they've done it, they never have to worry about what item goes with what and they always look co-ordinated. I might become - er - stylish....

Elrel Wed 01-Nov-17 10:07:05

All around the year I buy the things I really need. Occasionally I buy something I simply want.
I also give presents regardless of the date when I see something (maybe in a charity shop) I think a friend or family member would appreciate. Their surprised thanks can be a big treat for me, far better than anything I could buy myself.

I’m reminded of a social worker noticing an old lady’s sole Christmas card was oneshed sent to herself. I don’t know whether that was true.So sad.
There was also a poignant short story about an old lady who posted one parcel every Christmas and received just one. The same one.

Miep1 Wed 01-Nov-17 10:49:43

I might if I need/want something around that time of year, as I usually just get things as they are required, without needing to discuss it with anybody except myself! I live with my best friend, so we often buy each other little things over the year - this year though we are saving money to go on holiday so few presents. That's the idea, anyway...

Magrithea Mon 06-Nov-17 10:19:12

I bought something at the weekend and told DH that he'd bought it for me for Christmas (used the joint account credit card to pay! grin)
