I do like the Tesco one but have only seen that and the M & S one so far.

glammanana Sat 11-Nov-17 10:33:19

I like them all but my favourite has to be "Debenhams"

MissAdventure Sat 11-Nov-17 10:27:15

I can't stand the ads. I think they start way too early, and are ridiculous. Its known that Christmas is a strain for many, many people, and I think starting it all too soon is irresponsible.

GracesGranMK2 Sat 11-Nov-17 10:24:19

It doesn't kill off goodwill in my family BlueBelle. Does it in yours? I could understand your comments if it is causing your own family problems.

Jalima1108 Sat 11-Nov-17 10:20:43

Don't read this Gracesgran

I haven't seen any of them yet but DH and I did comment that we'd prefer to see someone saying 'Come to M&S/JL/Morrisons/Iceland or wherever for all your Christmas needs - we have all joined together and donated the £??? millions adverts would have cost to a charity for the homeless/children/ etc.

Is it me?
Sorry, Bah humbug

Proviso: I do enjoy Christmas though, but hate trawling round the shops for presents and will do any food shopping at my usual haunts!

BlueBelle Sat 11-Nov-17 10:14:39

Gracesgran my logic is that Christmas is so commercial it’s obscene and I m not even very religious
A of course I m not against advertising I m against this huge commercial competition that’s gets bigger and earlier every year and completely kills the season of ‘goodwill’ in its quest to be the biggest and the best and the earliest

.....and a big enough dining table to seat your huge, extensive family especially the grumpy granny Phoenix. angry

phoenix Sat 11-Nov-17 09:20:46

According to one advertisement, Christmas is all about buying a large TV angry

mcem Sat 11-Nov-17 08:56:12

vq I heard about the accusations of naughtiness in the m&s ad but can hear nothing apart from 'thank you little bear' !
Am I naïve or just going deaf?

grammargran Sat 11-Nov-17 08:44:59

Thank you WilmaKnickersfit, your explanation does seem likely but I remain unmoved, grumpy old woman that I am rapidly becoming. Christmas adverts before Remembrance Day just aren’t right (says she, snuggling back down into bed and pulling blanket over head ........ )

GracesGranMK2 Sat 11-Nov-17 08:35:34

Maggiemaybe it may not be, but it is one worth considering.

There are so many retailers - I don't know if it applies to the bigger ones - who make their profit for the year at Christmas. If we don't support them we will loose our high street even quicker than we are.

I have to admit I just like Christmas - even the tawdry bits.

GracesGranMK2 Sat 11-Nov-17 08:26:25

BlueBelle where is your logic? Do you really think they would make these adds if there wasn't worthwhile marketing in them? The companies must think so even if you don't.

Maggiemaybe Sat 11-Nov-17 08:23:25

I always enjoy the Christmas ads, but thought the tradition was that they all came out after Remembrance Day? I've only caught the JL one so far and I was a bit disappointed - they've had better. I hope at least one of them is going to bring a tear to my old eye!

Marketing is a massive and very successful industry in this country and one I feel we should be proud of. There are a lot of very creative people out there.

maddy629 Sat 11-Nov-17 07:30:18

Very disappointed with the John Lewis advert.

BlueBelle Sat 11-Nov-17 04:27:57

I think all the main supermarkets and big stores do that for charity Dunhamjen but I still don’t think it justifies spending 7 million on making a less than unique advert to run for a few weeks Do you really imagine everyone will consider shopping at John Lewis because of THAT advert I saw it for the first time last night and it didn’t make me feel warm and cuddly or rush to their nearest shop ( I must admit I ve never been inside a John Lewis store but hear they are pretty expensive)

GracesGranMK2 Fri 10-Nov-17 23:13:01

The Mog’s Christmas Calamity book of the Sainsbury's advert raised money for Save the Children to improve child literacy in the UK.

Caro1954 Fri 10-Nov-17 22:12:05

Thanks for that info durhamjen, I had no idea.

durhamjen Fri 10-Nov-17 19:04:17

For whoever said that John Lewis ought to give the money to charity, they do, just like Waitrose.
They have a community matters link on their site, and give money to charity every three months depending on the ratio of votes for the chosen charities, which change every three months.

WilmaKnickersfit Fri 10-Nov-17 18:50:37

grammargran the boy in the JL ad is tired during the day because he's playing with the monster during the night or the monster makes too much noise when it's sleeping . The monster realises this is not good for the boy, so buys him the planetarium to help him get to sleep. The growl at the end tells the boy his friend is still around. That's my understanding anyway! grin

GracesGranMK2 Fri 10-Nov-17 18:36:06

Do you mean the one where the little boys okay food was on green plates tessagee? I loved that.

I think there are still some of this years to come.

I believe that M & S has brought out a book to accompany the advert - all profits to charity. I like that too.

pollyperkins Fri 10-Nov-17 18:27:04

I like the m& s one as i think (correct me if Im wrong) Paddington is stopping a burglar stealing presents by naively thinking he's Santa and 'delivering' the presents ie putting them back until the burglar is ashamed of himself. That brought a tear to my eye. Didn't understand the bit with the sleigh really! The bit when he sees the children opening presents is ok but a bit sentimental. But I did think it illustrated the spirit of Christmas ie giving not receiving. And the present we saw wasnt hugely expensive.

tessagee Fri 10-Nov-17 18:19:22

I like Morrison's advert regarding gluten free food best, lovely and endearing, though perhaps other folk won't agree. Wasn't impressed by the John Lewis or M&S adverts and haven't seen any others.

RAF Fri 10-Nov-17 16:53:57

Really disappointed in the JL one this year, I thought last year's was brilliant, really made me laugh and didn't seem to be selling anything. This one is too scary for the little ones, and the little boy still ends up with a monster under his bed, doesn't make sense. M and S okay, but nothing to get me in teh Christmas spirit!

grammargran Fri 10-Nov-17 16:48:36

I really think I must be thick, watched the JL advert on FB this lunchtime and it’s gone completely over my head, what on earth is it about? It goes from monsters under the bed to hair cuts at the barber’s, falling asleep against a goal post, need I go on? Or there again, perhaps it’s just me ..........

Tegan2 Fri 10-Nov-17 16:48:09

I think the JL one will give two of my grandchildren nightmares sad. And possibly the third one, too,,,

pollyperkins Fri 10-Nov-17 16:26:30

Im not usually keen on these things but I do like the M&S Paddington ad. It's the only one Ive seen so far. Haven't really liked any of the John Lewis ones in past years.
