I do like the Tesco one but have only seen that and the M & S one so far.

£7 million may seem like a huge amount, but what we have to remember is that for every £1 spent on advertising £6 is returned to the UK economy. Think of all the people employed in the advertising industry and its knock on activities.

If anyone has ever lived abroad and watched the awful adverts on foreign TV, mainly centred around washing powders and yoghurts, then you would have to agree that the UK leads the field in this industry. I agree with GracesGran on page 1 that new technology in cinematography puts us right at the top of this industry, as does our clever use of British music in adverts which undoubtedly helps draws emotional responses too.

Every business sets aside an agreed amount of money for its advertising and marketing. I would start to question the success of a company if it were to withdraw its advertising or to cut back on its spending.

I haven't seen many of them but absolutely hate the Currys one. The look of horror on the children's faces when mum says they are going to have a tradional which changes to joy when she says they are only kidding and takes them to see the big TV they have bought. Very definitely bah humbug

BlueBelle Fri 10-Nov-17 15:28:29

Sheilasue that’s says it all really 7 million for the comment ‘well it is sweet though’ ?

Sheilasue Fri 10-Nov-17 14:31:43

The J hon Lewis ad was on good morning Britain this morning (Friday 10) apparently it cost 7 million and was made with an Oscar winning director. Who I don’t know.
Lot of dosh. Was sweet though.

There's been much comment elsewhere about the fact that the Tesco ad features Muslims, Sikhs, what seems to be a gay couple with a child, but no indication of Christianity apart from a tiny Star of Bethlehem in the far background.
None of them do anything apart from promote commercialism.

Liking the aldi one best so far, JL is good also, but not keen on m/s Paddington ad.

radicalnan Fri 10-Nov-17 12:58:33

Not exactly full of the Christmas spirit are we, squabbling away about the mawkish , manipulations on offer to make us buy stuff we really don't need.

Early days yet half the nation won't be on speaking terms by Boxing day.......

GracesGranMK2.
In the word/s of the late and the GREAT,EricMorcambe,
Rubbish.

WilmaKnickersfit Fri 10-Nov-17 12:33:46

I love the Aldi one. That joke about peas always makes me giggle. grin

I think it's a shame that M&S have been so blatant in going with Paddington just when the new film is due out. I like the JL one, but not as much as some in previous years. The others I've seen are a bit meh.

Smithy Fri 10-Nov-17 12:26:52

Sorry but hate the John Lewis one, too scary! Hate the Debenhams one, too mawkish! Don't mind the Aldi one but a bit bit boring.
The Jury's out on the M and S one.

harrigran Fri 10-Nov-17 12:08:43

Take back what I have just said, just seen the Boots advert and it is an ordinary, northern family featured in the film.

harrigran Fri 10-Nov-17 12:03:57

These adverts seem to be aimed at middle class families, I can't begin to imagine how awful poorer families must feel.

cwasin Fri 10-Nov-17 11:52:44

Vampire queen you have just made my day. I followed your YouTube link and DH and I have been sitting on the sofa together looking at Peter Kay on the iPad and crying laughing.

Lillie Fri 10-Nov-17 11:27:02

Brilliant JL advert, yes, along the same themes as in previous years but still delightful and the cinematography is amazing!

It isn't the cost of making the advert that's so expensive, it's the TV air time they are paying for. They need to launch the department store's Christmas merchandise before they bring on the Waitrose Christmas food adverts next month.

Marycat2 Fri 10-Nov-17 11:15:49

So far M&S are in the lead have just seen the JL ad not very impressed same concept as last year but with a monster they seem to have lost their way and are no longer THE xmas ad to watch.

Myym Fri 10-Nov-17 11:13:16

I've just laughed watching the new Aldi advert, they have continued with the Carrots again this year. I love to look for the little effects that make up the picture.....the Carrot reading a book, the title of which is '9 1/2 Leeks'

Napoleon Fri 10-Nov-17 10:53:54

Do not like John Lewis Christmas ad yet again being fed a cultural change

adaunas Fri 10-Nov-17 10:52:26

They’re fun to watch but my niece says they just make her feel even more inadequate because she can’t afford stuff on her wages. I wish they didn’t start till December, but everyone who is already half organised is a potential customer who they want to catch when they start their early shopppng. So I suppose we only have ourselves to blame.

mags1234 Fri 10-Nov-17 10:49:35

Can’t be bothered with it in November, bah humbug!

libra10 Fri 10-Nov-17 10:47:42

Have just seen the John Lewis ad.

Love the music, playful and funny.

But much too early for the Christmas ads to be shown.

Lupatria Fri 10-Nov-17 10:36:29

saw the jl christmas ad on youtube - seriously underwhelmed.
also seen the tesco one and a previes of the aldi one. they're ok.
may investigate youtube more after a mug of coffee.

lesley4357 Fri 10-Nov-17 10:35:25

Way too early! At least wait until December

LizHand Fri 10-Nov-17 10:32:31

JL uncovered this morning and lives up to all expectations especially the Beatles soundtrack. Whilst enjoying all the hype i'm not sure how these huge costs sits with me in these times of austerity...but hey thats businesssmile

harrigran Fri 10-Nov-17 10:30:44

Dreadful, enough to scare the littlies witless. Sorry John Lewis, must try harder.

LaraGransnet (GNHQ) Fri 10-Nov-17 10:24:18

The John Lewis Christmas ad is out today - thoughts on Moz the Monster? grin
