Just watched the John Lewis Christmas Advert ?????

Good publicity for Elton John

widgeon3 Fri 16-Nov-18 13:48:51

Blue Belle Just what I was going to say of the banned Iceland ad. It even carries a message that doesn't say ' Spend, spend, get into debt, pay it back later, buying stuff that people don't need'
I shall certainly go and investigate ICELAND. as for John Lewis, I have not been so impressed for several reasons.
Interestingly, nor was management when I tried to approach then

Treacletoffee Fri 16-Nov-18 15:02:27

No, l didn’t like it. I wondered how much they had paid him, given they are struggling as a company, and thought that as he has had a difficult relationship with his Mom, that the whole ad was a bit odd.

We haven't got a piano now

I want one

grin

Sparklefizz Fri 16-Nov-18 15:42:43

Treacletoffee Have you read the posts on the previous page which seem to answer both of your points?

GabriellaG Fri 16-Nov-18 15:50:04

We had a beautiful shiny black piano from Rushworths (Liverpool) when I was a child. Dad played honkey tonk Winnie Atwell style and I was taken to music lessons when my fingers could 'spread'confused enough.
I got to grade 8. When I was 17 I went to take drumming lessons from 'Julian' in Queens Drive every week and was allowed to practice on a set used by a b/f of the time who was in a popular group.
I have no piano now but can still tickle the ivories, as they say.

Jalima1108 Fri 16-Nov-18 15:51:29

I wish I hadn't insisted on giving up "because I have too much homework from school, Mum".
Is it too late now?
Can I stretch an octave?

GabriellaG Fri 16-Nov-18 15:51:39

I was well into Liberace, a great classical pianist and showman.

Jalima1108 Fri 16-Nov-18 15:54:37

my mum loved Liberace, she had his LPs - played on the radiogram which she bought when we got rid of the piano grin

Sparklefizz Fri 16-Nov-18 16:04:58

Well done Gabriella! We had my Grandma's old piano and my Mum played really beautifully. I wish I had learnt myself.

ebayqueen Fri 16-Nov-18 17:47:23

Can't stand the big diva. As if he needs the money or the publicity.Doesn't endear me to John Lewis

GabriellaG Fri 16-Nov-18 18:09:48

AnnieBach
The message?
That you're listening to a camp crooner. Empty egotist.
There is no message, other than a boost to the coffers of Reg Dwight.

GabriellaG Fri 16-Nov-18 18:15:24

* Anniebach, no capital 'B'. grin

Anniebach Fri 16-Nov-18 18:47:43

Gabriella I am a nitpicker because I didn’t see any message and didn’t like the advert . Haven’t changed my opinion though and doubt there will a rush to buy pianos ?

Parsley3 Fri 16-Nov-18 19:06:24

I saw this ad for the first time today. I like it. One if my favourite songs and I have nothing against EJ. So with no axe to grind I take the message to mean who knows what the outcome of giving a child a present will be. EG. Giving my daughter riding lessons at 5 has led to her career choice.

Gonegirl Fri 16-Nov-18 19:14:36

We do need entertainers. Life would be that much duller without them. And EJ is one of the best.

Gonegirl Fri 16-Nov-18 19:16:21

Took me most of the afternoon to get an order through to John Lewis today. Just buffering all the time. Website must be going into overload.

GabriellaG Fri 16-Nov-18 19:20:59

Anniebach
You have every right to nit-pick. I too thought it was an empty message and a disgusting waste of millions of £s to pay him, or anyone else, for a cameo role in a stitched together supposedly Christmas 'advert'.

Jalima1108 Fri 16-Nov-18 19:37:42

Gonegirl we do, we do!!

Wait until I get my piano for Christmas, I will be one of the best smile
(can't sing though)

Jalima1108 Fri 16-Nov-18 19:40:21

Giving my daughter riding lessons at 5 has led to her career choice.
That hits the nail absolutely on the head Parsley
Likewise with a piano and violin for mine

Iam64 Fri 16-Nov-18 19:49:35

Another vote for Parsley's comment that giving her daughter riding lessons at 5 led to her career choice.
We gave one of ours drama classes - she loved it, took it into university and now teaches.
Also thanks to Gonegirl, we do need entertainers. I don't like all of them, the ones I don't like, I just ignore. I don't know enough about Elton's personal life to diss him. I do know his music has brought a lot of happiness to many people. If you don't like him, fine, don't watch him and ignore it when his music appears on the radio. I dislike Slade's wish it could be Christmas every day - very much and on every level. I have to get over myself during the build up to Christmas because it's everywhere. that's life, innit.

My mum and dad once got me a Nutcracker/Sleeping Beauty LP and a table with ballerinas on for Christmas. If only they’d backed them up with ballet lessons, I could have been Darcy Bussell now.

Maggiemaybe Fri 16-Nov-18 20:08:21

A painting of ballerinas, obviously. Though real ballerinas would have been fabulous! grin
