Think I should throw them away?

Sorting through the freezer (making room for Christmas goodies) I have come across some mince pies from last year blush. Should I risk defrosting and eating them or just throw them away?

Eat them. I eat everything out of date, even eggs weeks after use by date. Still here.

I found bread only kept for a few weeks in the freezer, so now I made a double batch of dough, bake half and freeze the other half when the dough has proved.

I found 2 Christmas puddings at the back of a cupboard with BB date April 2019! We opened one and tried it the other night and it was lovely, and we lived to tell the tale. We'll be keeping the other one for Christmas this year!*

We've eaten one this year with a best before 2016.

I bought Christmas cakes after Christmas last year and have just started eating one this week. Think mince pies will be fine to eat ?

Yes I eat any food in the house whatever the date. Eggs that are out of date are used for making cakes. Just in case.

Eat them. Even if they have "gone off" I don't think there is anything than can make you ill. It's not meat or fish. Anything with a large sugar content is fine, the sugar acts as a preservative, like salt. I've very often eaten cakes and puddings, bacon or gammon past it's sell by date with no ill effect, unless of course I have caste iron guts?

This thread reminds me that when friends came round a couple of months ago, someone asked for a Martini Rosso, DH found a bottle in our drinks cupboard unopened and poured a glass, friend sipped and said it was lovely, DH went to put bottle back in cupboard and saw a price tag on the bottle, saying ‘Sainsbury £1.89’! We checked, it now costs around £10! At least it wasn’t pre-decimal! And btw friend is fine!

I'm not going to ask why Callistemon. Might not like the answer.

I can report I ate one of the mince pies last night - it tasted fine and I have had no ill effects! grin

annep1 I just remember what BIL told me once!

And the freshly baked supermarket loaf could be from frozen dough which is weeks old.

timetogo2016 Sun 08-Dec-19 09:53:32

Eat them.

annep1 Sun 08-Dec-19 17:07:46

I didn't know that Callistemon. Goodness. I wonder what else I don't know.
Please don't tell me what BiL told you ?.
