Christmas Tree- real or fake?

I saw this on Mumsnet and wondered what grans thought. I always had a real tree, ceremoniously bought by my dad, bless him. My ex would make a meal of putting it up and be very unpleasant about it. My son took over and would help me put it up. I swore by a real tree. Then one Christmas a few years back I was very skint. I told the kids I wasn't going to bother with a tree but they weren't fooled. They combined their money and bought me a lovely fake one. I was so touched. The benefit is, I can put it up single handed now I live alone. I don't think I'll ever go back to a real tree. Which do you have and why?

Always had real until a few years ago when I seperated and moved to a smaller house. I needed a tall tree but with a narrow spread and a real tree would have been too bushy. Also the faff of getting it in and then disposal afterwards.
My tree is pre lit and once covered in decorations looks very pretty. It’s plastic but I’ve been using it for eleven years now so I thinks it’s carbon footprint is fairly neutral.
Occasionally I get bored with the same tree so some years I use a big branch cut from my twisted willow and decorate that with lights and glass raindrops and a few feathery birds.

We have a teenage puppy - so no tree this year, of either sort!

Last year's tree-everything but the kitchen sink on it!! A real tree for us -it's the smell that's the decider. This years purchased & in the garden waiting to come in-bought from the Range (as was last years) at £35 for a 7ft very reasonable

Fake because when I moved the room has a log burner and the first year with a real all the branches bent and my glass baubles fell off and smashed. In my other house, the tree was further away from the open fire and I had real as I love the smell of pine. I have even tried a candle to try and get the smell.

The round Christmas Tree - don’t think it’ll catch on!

I am allergic to pine so artificial here. When I was a child my parents had a small silver tinsel tree indoors (it was the sixties and seventies after all) and, because we had a long porch, we had a real tree with coloured lights on outside. These days artificial trees can be very realistic but l have just bought a new slimline one as we don’t have a particularly big living room. I will have a smaller one in my music room from tomorrow with chocolate baubles on and in their last lesson of term my pupils will have a card and choose a chocolate decoration.

Oh Georgesgran I'm so glad you managed to post a photo! ?
You never know houses are getting smaller.
Maybe it would be suitable for that new flat pack apartment IKEA have recently brought out?
Popular in Japan, or so the blurb said.

Now I have an advert for a Japanese sauce.

no tree, no kids in the family, no visitors so I won't bother

We moved house earlier this year.
So,wait for it….I bought myself a PINK artificial tree!
Ever since I can remember I wanted a pink tree, and could barely wait to put it up.It’s up now and I love it!
Why did I wait until so old to do it?! So what if it’s naff and chavvy,I absolutely love it!

Sleepygran Tue 30-Nov-21 16:33:24

My pink tree!

jacalpad Tue 30-Nov-21 16:40:57

We’ve had a ‘real-looking’ artificial tree for years - since our dear little cat had a pine needle from a real one wedged sharp end in to her little paw.

We have a fake tree but the first year it was up I realised that I really missed the smell of fir! So I picked some fir from trees in our garden and pushed them in between the branches of our fake tree. Voila! A Christmas tree that didn't need watering and a lovely smell. Job done!

Grandmabatty Tue 30-Nov-21 16:47:23

Sleepygran love it!!

Fake had it 25 years l read somewhere its better for the enviroment if you use year after year.

Kim19 Tue 30-Nov-21 17:33:14

Bah humbug. I don't have one at all. Much too lazy but revel in everyone else's labours and artistic talents. Love Christmas but don't do personal trimmings in my mansion. When my son visits he says it's the only bit of normality he can find in the world.

We bought an articial tree
a few years ago after having an expensive and wasteful real ones for many years. We love our fake one, it looks wonderfully real and paid for itself in less than two years. The only thing I miss is the smell, but I usually try to get a branch of real fir somewhere to get a whiff. I also have a lovely candle that smells of log fires to make up for it!

I am investigating being 'green' and the carbon footprint of a real tree is far less than artificial. We always had big 9 foot real trees in our family home, but I'm now in a bungalow with far lower ceilings, and far less space.

See my earlier post re the carbon footprint of real versus fake.

We used to have a fake one because of having a dog (didn't want dropped pine needles getting in her paws). But since she went to The Rainbow Bridge, we have a real one from a local grower. It's part of our Christmas preparations to choose one ourselves and bring it home. Beautiful scent and every year it's slightly different. After Christmas we donate it to a local Alpaca owner - they love to nibble pine trees and it keeps them occupied for days, apparently!

No mess or clearing up either. But you will indulge yourself a little I hope, wont you Janetashbolt?

Please be careful with real trees, years ago my DIL and I were putting the decorations on and afterwards we both had awful rashes on our arms. We think that it was from chemicals that were sprayed on the tree.

Always have a real tree. This year we bought potted rooted one. It's just over 5ft tall. In the garden til a few days before Xmas, then back out a few days after.

theworriedwell Wed 01-Dec-21 12:37:43

Just put my tree up, I normally put it up a few days before Christmas but GS has been isolated in his bedroom for 8 days and I've said he can come downstairs for a couple of hours today (windows open, him sitting well away from us) as he is getting very depressed. So there is my artificial tree with my husbands angel on the top, he says she was on his tree from as early as he can remember so that is 70 years old. She is showing her age but place of honour.

Advent calendar out for him and nativity scene on the hearth.

Very exciting afternoon for him. Hope it cheers him up.

theworriedwell Wed 01-Dec-21 14:32:40

He's downstairs, very excited to get his Advent Calendar and see the tree so was worth the effort. Amazing how a few hours of relative normality can make such a difference.
