I’m full of admiration for the D of C playing the piano. I thought she was fantastic. I know it wasn’t the hardest of pieces and that it was pre-recorded, but I thought she did so well. Speaking as one who’s struggling to get up the grades, I know how difficult it is and how nerves can destroy a performance that seems so secure in the safety of your own home. Well done Kate!

What to my mind requires true courage is to disagree with the fawning responses to anything relating to the Royal Family on gransnet.

The comments are not in any way 'fawning' but genuine admiration and respect. In contrast the anti-Royalist comments on GN have often been disgusting, disrespectful and unpleasant, and it's the same republicans who keep banging the same anti-monarchy drum endlessly.

Them?

We walk among you and we're making a list.

grin

Crikey.

I, too, would like Scotland to have independence and many of my friends feel likewise. Strangely enough, the vilified Royal family seem keen to keep them in the fold. Many of us, only to glad to see them go.

My neighbour has a piano

That's funny Yammy I too have lived next door to Scotland all my life, never had that problem. The people in Carlisle were a different story absolute buggers grin

I'm not from Carlisle and wouldn't call anyone a Bugger.

What? Are you for real?

How ridiculous. Sorry if my being Scottish irritates you Yammy. Well, no, not sorry at all, come to think of it. hmm

It doesn't irritate me at all, I have Scots relations and Scots friends and a high percentage of Scots DNA, but they do not take every opportunity to knock the English and usually, I do not take every opportunity to knock the Scots. Why does everything have to turn into a dissection of the Royal families actions? The woman can play the piano she showed it , however many rehearsals it took.
For what anyone knows maybe a lot of English would like you to have your independence I would for one.hmm

This thread has taken a rather xenophobic twist. One of my neighbours is from Leeds

This is getting very weird.

Get rid of that chip on your shoulder lassie, it's making you unbalanced.

That was a bizarre post Yammy.

Was it really? Having lived next to the Scots for half of my life I have come into contact constantly with their one up man ship and putting down the English. Though when their pubs were closed they didn't mind spending their money in England. Can't they give it a rest for one day? However the performance was practised it was very accomplished and lovely to listen to.

Leave her alone, for goodness sake.

Sweetpeasue Sun 26-Dec-21 11:33:25

I took my grades in Piano as an adult and I can honestly say it is terrifying. My GP gave me beta blockers to take before my grade 7 and 8 because my trembling fingers could not cope with the keys, and that's without finding that the printed nots on the music suddenly look completely alien.
Kate would be doubly nervous about it as she is in the public eye.
It might be stretching it, as one commentator said, that she was a 'great musician', but she did a wonderful job.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 26-Dec-21 11:13:09

I enjoyed the entire concert, refreshing but dignified.

Forsythia Sun 26-Dec-21 11:00:20

I thought she did well knowing the bitters would criticise her every note. She looked wonderful, the red suited her.

Musicgirl Sun 26-Dec-21 10:59:53

Floriel, I could not agree more with what your music teachers told you. This has certainly been my experience with adult pupils. Congratulations on taking grade 7 - a tremendous achievement. I hope you got the result you wanted.

I didn't like her dress

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 26-Dec-21 10:57:20

I only saw a short clip but apart from her musical skill what came across to me as always were her quiet composure and grace. I have nothing but admiration for her.

Sparklefizz Sun 26-Dec-21 10:52:09

Music teachers say nerves are usually worse in adults than children, and imagine being Catherine, whose every move is scrutinised. I think she had quiet courage and carried it off beautifully.

Well said Floriel

As a musician professional accompanist, l can say that qaccompanying is an art in iitself quite separate from ordinary piano playing and often much more difficult. I am full of admiration for the Duchess of Cambridge

Yammy Sun 26-Dec-21 10:44:50

Alegrias1

No, seriously.

Courage? Awe?

To play the piano in a pre-recorded video?

What's Nichola got up her sleeve to beat that, a Highland fling on the prom at Ayr with a Fish supper to follow at that posh one in Kirkcudbright.
Happy boxing day to one and all. The Scots what ha wi Wallace bled are off again.sad

Alegrias1 Sun 26-Dec-21 10:37:10

No Sarnia, no bells.

I'm not a Christian and I'm not a monarchist, so I didn't watch the carol concert and I haven't heard all the piece she played, only the snippets on the news.

I think that since it was pre-recorded and they would have had several takes at it, the likelihood of her making a complete muck of it was quite small. And in any case, I won't be criticising the RF for their ability to play musical instruments. Not for that, no.
