Christmas Eve Meal Ideas

I love egg and chips with thickly buttered white bread.

Whatever is left of everyday food either just as it is, or made into an omlette if suited to the purpose.

My daughter cooks a big ham on the morning then we have it with egg and chips for dinner on the evening. We’ve done it for several years and we all enjoy it

We have the Nigel Slater fish pie. Pâté feuilletée with leeks, cream, smoked salmon, smoked mackerel, tarragon and new potatoes inside. I buy the pastry and the rest is quite quick to do.

I'm all for the takeaway. Who wants to prepare all the food for Xmas Day and then have to think about Christmas Eve too?

We always have a light supper before the big day with its heavy food.

So, it will be smoked salmon with king prawns and homemade (breadmaker) bread accompanied by some sparkling wine. I'm hoping to persuade Mr Lilyflower that this ought to be Champagne as it's Christmas. But Cordoniu is very nice too.

Having read all these suggestions, I have decided - in the interests of wider public interest, you understand - that they should be checked out in person, and at great personal sacrifice I'm prepared to take on this task.....

Takeaway!!!

I cook a huge gammon in the slow cooker so no work, we have it with Jacket spuds and salad but you could do it with chips and egg. The rest of the gammon is for Xmas day / boxing day!

Usually do something UN British trad. And do something British everyday! Curry Carribbean Italian Chinese Thai German French scandi you name it - we have it all in UK!!!! Not just me then Helenlouise? I always always cook turkey on Eve after a catastrophic disaaaaster in '95 when a new oven in very old house failed to even warm up my bird after 3hours!!!!! We finally ate at 10pm after cooking in bits in microwave!!! Never again! I have all the top appliances nowadays but aversion therapy actually works!😅

I am thinking about making a prawn curry with garlic and spinach rice mushroom Bhaji and bread.

Just the 2 of us this Christmas so it's a cooked ham with veg. Christmas eve. M&S salmon en croute with veg for Christmas day. Plenty of Prosseco before and after....hic

We will be cooking a piece of gammon for the festivities so will have a meal of hot roast gammon with pease pudding (from a tin) and veg.

DH and I always used to have steak.

We have a Littlebourne of always having smoked salmon, prawns and Marie Rose with a bit of bistro salad and brown bread and butter! Followed by the first slice of Christmas cake!!

It’s a Saturday and Saturdays mean fish and chips! Christmas Eve won’t change that. Christmas Day is at a relatives and Boxing Day I am doing soup, jackets and various party type bits I’ve picked up from sainsbury. Boxing Day is just the two of us. Hopefully followed by a nice film!

I usually cook the ham, we’d have it with hot, spices red cabbage and jacket spuds while watching Its a Wonderful life, just the two of us

Our daughters and families say I can’t eat alone on Christmas Eve so, 4 children aged 3-7, their four parents, an extra dog, making 3 dogs and me. It’s Die Hard and a takeout from the excellent Indian restaurant a mile away (and happy meals for the children 😂

I always make crispy duck with pancakes, granddaughter has vegetarian duck (don’t ask!). One large duck, I buy the pancakes, plum sauce and slice cucumbers with spring onions.
Everyone enjoys it, little clearing up and the duck fat is used for roasties the next day.

Sorry, Jacky (I am going to ask ) can you tell me where the vegetarian duck is from please?

I'm impressed at the effort some of you are putting in! We're not hosting Christmas this year but I'm still making the sticky toffee puddings, the trifle, bread sauce, and cranberry sauce tomorrow. Easy peasy really compared to the full meal prep, but when DD2 and her lot come over at dinner time we'll just be getting fish and chips. Tea'll be whatever we fancy/whatever needs eating up.

Back to prawn curry for us this year (but I shall be very careful not to spill it this time). I'm feeling grim enough with the sore throat/cough/might or might not be Covid thing. I shall take a test in the morning and see how I am before deciding whether or not to go to DS2 and family on Christmas day. I don't want to pass it on to them. They are only half an hour away so DH could go with the presents and eat, then bring me back a meal.
