Ok so , John Lewis Christmas ad is causing much discussion between me and OH, What is it about? Is the main character dead ? Is her sister dead ? Is no one dead ? Is she just mourning the spirit of Christmas past ? We are stuck !!!
(Apologies if this has been posted before)

I would rather watch any advert other than the ones for sanitary products.

I personally would rather watch a whole hour of adverts for sanitary
towels and tampons & incontinent pads than watch 2 minites of that drippy, poncy, twitty John Lewis advert. What a load of baubles! 😙

Yes totally agree

So very disappointed in JLewis one this year, as someone else said, manic., very unwatchable.

I couldn't agree with you more Mt61. So many ex-military personnel seem to lose their way as they are not supported unless of of course they are the higher- upper military -type. 🤔

As the mother of two sisters who are very close, this advert is very heartwarming.
Sorry, Lovely Lady, but this season was hijacked from the pagans, so forgive us if we don’t agree with you about the lack of the Nativity.

It actually most probably wasn’t, though there is a lot of lazy journalism on the topic.

This is a blog post by an atheist historian.

Thank god, I thought it was just me that couldn't understand the point of the John Lewis advert. When it had finished I asked my husband what he thought it meant? He said he had no idea and couldn't give a toss.
I dislike the Dawn French one too, her make up is awful and doesn't do her justice and the amount of food is gross. I totally agree with an an earlier post where it was suggested that the huge amounts of money spent making these pointless adverts could go to deserving charities. At least Kevin the Carrot was amusing!!

I think instead of making these adverts they should donate, what it would have cost to make the advert to our homeless ex-military people, I know of at least two!

I found it moving and nostalgic. Maybe that because I have lost my sister. I didn’t find it at all confusing.

Ilovedogs22 Wed 20-Nov-24 19:31:14

Well ha ha haha back at yer BlueBelle, I knew what I meant &
I really don't like Dawn French's hair.
We are allowed to deviate from the script from time to time you know. 🙄

BlueBelle

Doesn’t Dawn French look lovely with her silver grey hair?

Ohh! I have to disagree about Dawn French, she gives me the creeps!!!
Furthermore, I don't think she & Jennifer Saunders are as funny as they think they both are. Overated the pair of them 🥴

Haha I didn’t say do you like her I was referring to her hair style which havenothing at all to do with liking someone

Got everyone talking about John Lewis though……wink

You are correct, the advert has been a success!

Not necessarily! We are talking about it. It doesn’t mean we are shopping there, or intending to!

I looked at some trousers on their website today but ordered some from elsewhere. 😀

Thanks for all the replies and opinions! I still don't get it, poerhaps it's up to each of us to make our own minds up !

I still remember the old series of Boots adverts 'Here come the girls' Where everyone finished work and glammed up for the work party.Loved those adverts as I can remember doing the same, that lovely Christmassy anticipation of the night out that you'd paid in all year for ! Don't suppose that sort of advert would be PC now.

It's just about buying stuff- which is the whole point of Christmas.

I haven't watched it anyway!

I your eyes maybe. Very sad if that's what you think Christmas is, about spending.

I was being sarcastic sorry. However, it would seem from the rampant commercialism that it is for some very much about the shopping. The only reason for going to John Lewis is to buy stuff, they don't give stuff away!

For me it is about the mystery of the Incarnation- God becoming man as a helpless baby. If you would rather shop than contemplate this then you are missing out on... everything really.

Not seen it..but Boots and M&S are awful...still like Kevin the Carrot

Totally agree. The Lidl one is good too.

Absolutely spot-on Jd79 !!!

Actually isn't the whole point of Christmas really Jesus? He came to earth as a Baby. Haven't you heard Jesus is the reason for the season. The rest is great of course but without Him there wouldn't be Christ mas. Have a lovely one :-)

Harris27 Wed 20-Nov-24 16:01:36

Love the M&S one full of Christmas spirit and fun!

workinglady Wed 20-Nov-24 15:48:55

All the Christmas on TV just now have no relation at all to the meaning of Christmas. They just want to "peddle their wares" to the gullible public who purchase on credit and spend the next year paying it back (with interest) to start all over again!
The true meaning of Christmas is lost to the majority of people sadly.

Totally agree! I usually love their Christmas ads but this one is awful. I can’t figure out what’s going on at all.

"Quite an amusing review of it in The Guardian -

Brilliant!

I am going to be the odd one here. I can't remember the last time I watched TV. It sits in the corner redundant smile

Lizzie44 Wed 20-Nov-24 15:04:42

I think the JL ad is ok and a change from dogs jumping on trampolines or whatever. The sole message of the ad is "do your Christmas shopping in our store". I don't think nativity scenes are likely to come into it - religion is probably too sensitive an issue nowadays to go down that path.
