How many Christmas cards will you send this year with postage being so expensive ?

Crossstitchfan Fri 29-Aug-25 00:41:44

How can you even think about Christmas? It’s the end of August! 😱
In answer to your question, I shall only be giving cards to my youngest grandchildren. As a family, we agreed ages ago that we did not intend to pay the exorbitant price Royal Mail are charging. All my friends and neighbours feel the same, if their actions last year are anything to go by, when most of them refused to send any. Royal Mail had better watch out!
My hairdresser told me this morning that she is already dreading the time between now and the big day as most of clients are talking about it already, some have been for a week or more. She said it’s hard to chat about something that’s 100 days away! I couldn’t agree more.

BlueBelle Fri 29-Aug-25 06:13:09

Oh stop it Fidelity 🤣
As Croistitchfan says it’s August !!!
No way am I remotely thinking about the dreaded C word

argymargy Fri 29-Aug-25 06:15:34

I visited my local Tesco yesterday and the “seasonal” aisle has Xmas puddings, cakes, mince pies…

Calendargirl Fri 29-Aug-25 06:41:21

Oh, for goodness sake!…

RosieandherMaw Fri 29-Aug-25 06:53:45

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
This is wrong on so many levels, it’s still only AUGUST!
Nobody’s business but their own how many cards they send . They may have friends all over the country or they may have formerly only sent cards locally. But either way it is TOO EARLY to start this pointless (non) discussion.

Went to a local(ish) garden centre for lunch yesterday, the main hall was cordoned off with a very large sign indicating Christmas arriving 11th September, along with German Christmas Market

eddiecat78 Fri 29-Aug-25 07:44:28

For goodness sake - why would anyone waste a third of the year thinking about just one day?!

Cambsnan Fri 29-Aug-25 07:48:00

Shops would not display item if people are not buying. I guess some people buy early to spread the cost??

Flippinheck Fri 29-Aug-25 07:48:11

No! There should be a ban on even mentioning ***** before the end of November and Halloween should be banned altogether. Just ways to extort more and more money from us.

rafichagran Fri 29-Aug-25 07:56:25

I love Christmas but for me it starts in December, but I know other people are different.
I honestly think some of the replies here are harsh and rude, just because some of you don't like the question.

I am so sorry if you think my comment was harsh and rude. I believe the same about your last paragraph. Surely we are allowed to state our views, just as you are.

Nothing harsh or rude just leg pulling and horror rafiagran

Christmas is spoilt by starting it far too early. I will think about it around the first of December.
I'm not falling into the trap set by supermarkets to get people to spend even more money.
The financial pressure put on hard pressed families by Christmas is bad enough without starting it in August.

Yours was Bluebelle but a couple have been condescending and nasty. Like I say I love Christmas and it starts in December but let's be tolerant and accept others views.
I was reading a Christmas thread on Mumsnet and some of the posters are starting christmas shopping now to spread the cost. I am lucky I don't have too.
One poster was very dismissive of the question.

The only reason I think about C*******s now is that I have to arrange projects for our craft club. Apart from that December is soon enough.

Dontcallmelove Fri 29-Aug-25 08:27:01

We have whittled down our Christmas card list over the last few years and this year it will be cut down again. We used to send around 80 cards, last year it was about 40. We don’t speak or see around half of the people we send cards to but ‘like to keep in touch’! Not this year though. If we have their email or phone number we will use that to send them seasonal greetings.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 29-Aug-25 08:56:00

I already have gifts in my Christmas cupboard.

Five children and partners/wives, 8 GC, along with my sister and her family, added to this three December birthdays, I have to be organised.

I adore Christmas and the run up to it, house is decorated on 1st December, including outside and artificial trees. Real tree isn’t brought in until closer to the day

I also like Halloween, I love to see the little ones dressing up and having fun (it’s not an American thing, it started here, they just made it bigger)

My eighteen year old granddaughter has worked one day a week at our local garden centre. Having finished her diploma in Art she is delighted to have been given extra days to help create the Christmas display. Helping to sort the Christmas cards last week she was amazed at how many people complained to her about the early preparations for Christmas as if she has any control. Some people were unnecessarily quite rude.

Babs03 Fri 29-Aug-25 09:25:40

When I worked as a volunteer in a charity shop we usually put Christmas cards out in August and there would always be customers who would be rude to volunteers in the shop, as if it was their fault.
Christmas is a huge money making racket so it will be everywhere in the shops very soon if not already. If people don’t like it they can just walk on by.

You are accusing some of us of being condescending and nasty for expressing our personal opinions, which is nasty in itself, yet follow that by saying, ‘let’s be tolerant and accept others’ views’. You don’t see the contradiction in that?

eddiecat78 Fri 29-Aug-25 09:41:33

Nobody has been nasty or rude. Some of us feel very strongly that Christmas should not be an issue when it is still summer. If people need to budget so far in advance perhaps they shouldn't be spending so much on it anyway.
Most of us here are much nearer the end of our lives rather than the beginning. We should be savouring every day not constantly being rushed ahead to the next "big event"

Oreo Fri 29-Aug-25 09:44:43

I don’t do Christmas but admit to enjoying the Christmas meal!
And pudding and mince pies are heavenly too.As the price of stamps is now extortionate I think many people will choose to re-think sending lots of cards this year, but yes😄it’s very early to think about it.

Witzend Fri 29-Aug-25 09:48:28

Around the same as last year, TBH, except for a a couple who’ve since died. I still like receiving them, too.

Still, I don’t think I’ll need to buy any cards, still plenty left over from previous years.

Witzend Fri 29-Aug-25 09:50:57

Oh, and talking of the C-word, I’ve already embarked on what must be the 5th Nativity Set (they take ages) since I want the youngest Gdc to have one to take to school for their 🎄raffle, same as the elder two have had.
2 shepherds and one Wise Man down, loads more to go….
