I am seriously thinking of not sending Christmas cards this year.
Catgrann I will spend most of Christmas day by myself so I will get up late, do the absolute minimum of housework, have a nice lunch and then go for afternoon tea with DCs and the GCs.
I don't bother with decorations as it is just me.

(118 Posts)How many Christmas cards will you send this year with postage being so expensive ?
It is early to think about Christmas, although as I type this it is the last day in September, and this a little closer.
I am new here by the way so I hope it's ok to just post like this.
I want to ask if any of you will be spending Christmas alone, and if so ,how do you intend to spend it? Will you just act like it's any other day,do the ironing or whatever chores await,or will you put up decorations and cook something special ?
Christmas has become just a commercial fest. I detest it.
Yes I did it all by the book for several decades, but now, I cant stand it.
I no longer send cards. They’re unnecessary and the cost with postage is exorbitant, only to be disposed of a few days later.
If I could escape it, I would.
I have reduced the card giving to immediate family.
To be honest, I love the Christmas decorating and follow a few facebook groups on the subject.

How can you even think about Christmas? It’s the end of August! 😱
In answer to your question, I shall only be giving cards to my youngest grandchildren. As a family, we agreed ages ago that we did not intend to pay the exorbitant price Royal Mail are charging. All my friends and neighbours feel the same, if their actions last year are anything to go by, when most of them refused to send any. Royal Mail had better watch out!
My hairdresser told me this morning that she is already dreading the time between now and the big day as most of clients are talking about it already, some have been for a week or more. She said it’s hard to chat about something that’s 100 days away! I couldn’t agree more.
I work in a small newsagents. We had Christmas magazines start coming in middle of August.
It seems to get earlier and earlier every year.

None. We hand deliver.
Do you only send cards to people who live locally, then? Mine go all over the country, and some abroad.
I’d like to stop sending cards, but it’s not easy. People I rarely see will think I’m dead, or at least not well. Also, I like getting them!
Same! A good many of ours go abroad.
We hand deliver to a few neighbours, but there are never many locally, except for a few ex colleagues.
Following a comment about Easter yesterday, I coincidentally had an e-mail from a well know High Street retailer saying their website was being re-vamped and from mid Sept there will be a different way of purchasing goods. All current stuff reduced. So of course, I had to look and I bought Halloween stuff and Easter stuff. Spent under £20 and will receive a lot of cr*p which, when the time comes will cause lots of amusement. Apologies, this is veering off the original post but wanted to share.
Love Christmas and love looking forward to it and planning the (quiet) fun.
About fifty as usual. I might have to rob a bank to pay the postage.
Joke.
One does wonder quite how rude some might be were they in a face to face situation. Those who pour scorn and make snippy remarks hiding behind a pseudonym must be a little warped.
In the spirit of the OP’s original question:
My ‘sending’ card list has shrunk, mainly due to bereavements.
I still do C stockings for my very adult DCs! - so I pick up bits and bobs throughout the year, whenever I see something appropriate and on offer/reduced in price!
I can’t even think of Christmas until after family birthdays early in November. My card list has shrunk in tune with the postage price increases!

TillyTrotter unfortunately it’s not unusual on GN at the moment, there appears to be a lot of pent up anger and frustration which is vented on all sorts of friendly threads.
Well said. This poster asked a reasonable question, some posters did not like it because it disagrees with their views.
I know I don't do Christmas until December but I don't object to people who post and do things differently to me.

Quite. The thread’s clearly entitled Christmas. If you don’t want to discuss Christmas yet you’ve still clicked and discussed, perhaps it’s not the OP being silly or not having enough to do…
Agreed
Seems the OP didn't return, I wonder why?
Though I’ve just clicked on a thread entitled Best SARMs for Bulking for Skinny Fat Guys2, so who am I to comment?

And if you try to make a light-hearted comment to reinstate the peace, or to highlight a similar thread for information, then that is wrong too. What's going on?
Goodness knows!
Tetchy remarks abound even on fluffy threads.🧵

Those of us who have ever worked in Retail know that Christmas has to be thought about in February. Placing stock orders, Toy Trade Fairs etc.
If you send cards abroad they have early posting dates too.
I am incredulous that this innocent Chat thread has attracted such derisive remarks.
It will put GN members off starting threads.
Agreed

Good grief that was condescending notagran
All you who love Christmas, that’s great but discussing Christmas in August (well it was when the thread started) is silly and just wishing life away
If you need to think or buy early that’s absolutely fine but having threads about it while we re still enjoying summer / autumn is not the best at all and to be honest I find dispiriting
and quite depressing in this rather sad world of war and fear hunger and bullets
Now whose going to start a thread about Easter ?
Surely you read the thread title?
Why did you read it?
Yes you are right, people will be put off. What is happening on here lately? People seem to be snapping and snarling like never before. I got caught up in an altercation a couple of days ago, which wasn’t pleasant as I hate falling out with anyone.
I don’t know about everyone else, but I come on here for a chat and, if I’m honest, a nose into what people are up to! Normally, I look forward to it but lately, I have felt a little nervous after posting anything because there is often someone who jumps down my throat, and that’s not pleasant.
If it continues, I shall probably stop coming on here and will certainly stop having my say.
It’s a new month. Let’s have a new start. Please 🙏

BlueBelle I purchased Easter Gift Bags, ribbon and tissue back in June, I saw them online and less than half price, it would have been foolish not to, as I make up eight Easter gift bags.
Some of us just like to be organised, it is in no way wishing our lives away in fact it’s the opposite.
Being ahead of the game leaves me time to enjoy my life, my family along with the seasons without the constant fear of forgetting something and rushing around like a headless chicken.
Likewise I have a holiday bag in one of my wardrobes, ready with all lotions & potions which ensures that I can be ready to go anywhere at the drop of a hat.
