How many Christmas cards will you send this year with postage being so expensive ?

I love Christmas but for me it starts in December, but I know other people are different.
I honestly think some of the replies here are harsh and rude, just because some of you don't like the question.

I am so sorry if you think my comment was harsh and rude. I believe the same about your last paragraph. Surely we are allowed to state our views, just as you are.

It is a legitimate question given that stamps will no doubt increase in price again soon, and cards are appearing in the shops.
If you do not wish to join the discussion, then don't.

If you believe your comments were lighthearted, please remember that there is not tone of voice in print, and your comment did appear a little rude as a result.

I think Xmas card are now an endangered species.

Hate the word Xmas by the way. Ever since it reared its ugly head in the Sixties.

Jeez

Same as last year. I put a few cards in a larger envelope for family members and any mutual friends. It's only one large letter stamp to send to 4 family members eg Son grandchildren friend and her husband.

Please tell me you didn't say the .....
C word! Not yet please,!
Oh gosh I need to lie down with a sniffter of brandy.

Stamps have got so expensive, which is a pity as I like to send and receive Christmas cards. So will probably just send cards to a small number of friends who live far away and hand out the rest.
As for thinking about Christmas, I like to think about all things Autumn at this time of year with the changing seasons and that includes Christmas. We talk about plans for Christmas with the family so we all know what is happening over Christmas, a lovely time to see family and friends so we look forward to it. However there are people who don’t want to think about it for all sorts of reasons and that’s fine to. There are many people who don’t think it’s strange to book/think about a holiday months in advance, everyone to their own.

It is just a bit early, but some like to plan well ahead. Others are perhaps like the young man who rushed into the Boots branch where I worked as a Saturday girl, and bought about ten sets of nice smellies for mum, aunties and nans just before closing on Christmas Eve. I was told he did that every year. We gave up on cards when the amount spent on stamps reached silly proportions - we now donate to a charity. I send a birthday card and catch up note to those we don't see, 'can't see any point in sending Christmas cards to people we are constantly in touch with.

Most people who go out for lunch on Christmas Day book from year to year or you will not get in. Entertainment has to be booked for Christmas and New Year sometime 2 years in advance. Of course people talk about Christmas, businesses, clubs, organisations and many more have to plan these things long in advance.
Put your blinker on by all means but Christmas is here all year around for some of us.

Christmas cards to elderly family who I know love getting them.
Hand delivered to local friends and family and E cards to the rest.

Hev1959 Sun 31-Aug-25 15:11:46

I thought the same, after all Christmas is arriving in the shops now.

Hev1959 Sun 31-Aug-25 15:14:21

I’ve got my card list written already, so ignore the negative comments.
I don’t post any in the UK, we hand deliver when visiting but I do have some to send abroad and I know it’ll cost a lot more than the cards did!

Probably 50 ish.

I received this card and calendar from family in New Zealand yesterday. 🇳🇿 🤣

None because I've got no friends.

Some of you are very grumpy, lighten up

Crosstitchfan......They have Christmas cards in the Charity shops since July, they do it ever year and it's so depressing, it's like rubbing out the Autumn which I love.

I completely agree. It's an innocent enough question and politeness costs nothing.

Yes, Essexgirl, I feel exactly the same as you! Why jump straight from Summer into Christmas when Autumn is such a lovely time of year? Lovely crisp walks when it’s not too cold to enjoy them, coming home to hot drinks. I love the way the nights draw in, it gradually gets cooler and then you are into December! Then, and only then, should Christmas raise its head.
I love Christmas, but not this early, please!
Happy Autumn, everyone!

I have a friend who has started C*******s gift shopping and booked her hairdresser in December already.
Some people just love it.
Cards will die out eventually like cheque books I believe.

I don’t think booking a Christmastime hairdo now is an indication of people starting Christmas too early. It’s a necessity if their hairdresser is as booked up as mine. I have done the same, even though I hate Christmas being talked about and advertised in August. With hair appts though, it’s needs must!
I shan’t do anything else towards it now until the beginning of December.
Autumn is to be treasured and enjoyed (crisp walks and cuddly sweaters etc). Don’t lose it because you let Christmas thoughts take over!

B M Stores had some Christmas things last week!

ClicketyClick Sun 31-Aug-25 17:49:15

I also look forward to Autumn and don't want the c word rammed in my face this soon. I agree with Flippingheck on it being about extorting more and more money from us. It's virtually all year! I'm bound to have missed some money grabbing celebratory days off but these are the obvious that spring to mind.

Feb Valentine's day
March mother's day
April Easter
June fathers day
Sept grandparents day (still?)
Oct Halloween
Nov bonfire night
Dec the c word!

Re Christmas cards
I’ll still post to family members that live at the other end of the Country or abroad. Thankfully that’s only a handful of cards. Like you say, the price of a stamp is ridiculous, I nearly had a heart attack when I purchased a book of 4 first class stamps the other week. I’m also amazed that shops are now stocking Christmas items. It does seem a little too early. Though saying that, I do start my gift shopping in October.

Nanny27 Sun 31-Aug-25 18:35:47

It must be lovely for those who don't even need to think about Christmas until the beginning of December but I don't have that luxury. With 17 members of my family to buy presents for I need to start early. I need to be finished by the end of November at least so that December pay can set aside for food shopping.
As a family we usually get together in the summer to decide who will host and what if any accommodation needs to be arranged.

No, it's not lovely. It's a choice. You don't need to do any of it.

WithNobs, I believe it has a far longer heritage than the 60s and has an interesting, complex etymology.

But I also dislike its use when the full word would make more sense. But it is not that recent.

Bluecat Sun 31-Aug-25 20:32:23

I shall send 3. One to my oldest friend, one to my next-oldest friend. Both now live a couple of hundred miles away from me. The third to a very old cousin who also lives far away. Difficult to know what to write in his card as one of his sons, three years ago, hanged himself a few days before Christmas. Can't really put anything except a lame "thinking of you" sort of comment.
