What's the worst present you've ever received, either for Christmas, birthday or another occasion?

Mine was a small box of Dairy Milk, from a close friend of many years.... mine to him was a golf bag, to put his clubs in (he was an Estate Agent, so not on minimum wage, like I was then)

We did a “secret Santa” at work. I always chose something carefully, sometimes a Christmas decoration, some Fairtrade chocolate, a pretty mug, a small scented candle. One year I got a pair of false breasts and a pair of plastic handcuffs.

Definitely from a bloke!

As a young child, in a poor mining area with very few toys - my brother and I received from my least favourite, but well-off very well-married grandma, for Christmas - a children's pictorial bible…

Later, when married, husband told me excitedly that my birthday present was “in the west wing” (front room 😂) - the box was utterly huge…..
- a industrial petrol driven strimmer, way too heavy to lift and for him really….

I remember when me and friend were 18 and she wanted a particular jumper she’d seen and some books she really wanted. At the time they were the Flowers in the Attic collection very popular at the time. On Xmas day she rang me to tell me that she almost got the jumper, her mum had bought her wool to knit her own jumper! She couldn’t knit!! As for the books she was bought the complete works of Shakespeare, not quite the flowers in the attic collection! grin We laughed and laughed, it has stuck in my mind for all these years. The jumper didn’t get knitted and the books gathered dust!! grin

When I started work in an office in the 60s the first Christmas gift I received from the office manager was a Tweeny Twink home perm kit. She obviously didn't like my straight hair!

When I was twelve I bought mum a chip pan. I couldn't understand why she wasn't delighted.

We had only been married a year. He got me 2 large red plastic washing baskets because he thought 'they would be useful'!

EX husband ….. gave me a flower vase, I said “thank you, I’ll now put it in the cupboard with the other 6 I already have”. As his Co had just gone bust, I couldn’t afford the flowers anyway !
Then on my birthday he gave me a thimble cabinet, I said “ if you truly think I’m the sort of woman who wants to collect thimbles, then you truly do not have a clue who I am”. I divorced him very soon after 🤣 for the above plus many other issues, far too numerous to mention 🤣

I got underwear for a few years from an aunt who worked as a seamstress in a factory - at least two sizes too small, to look at me you'd realise I was no longer a size 10. I didn't want to hurt her feelings so I managed to knock it on the head by saying that we could simply exchange cards, a suggestion she was willing to take on board as she had many sisters, also with families and it helped to cut costs.

A friend who'd always been a bit of a 'nervous Nelly' had the most awful bitten nails and one year a secret Santa gave her a set of false nails which she found hugely embarrassing. She laughed it off - but on the bright side it gave her the impetus to stop biting them and by the following year she had a decent set of natural nails for the first time in her life.

A gift should just be accepted with the caring it was given with. However small or large that is not of consequence. A gift is a gift... It should never be thought of as the worse gift you have received...

DH gave me a bright green foam-backed dressing gown with a design of orange roses that looked like snails. The wide lapels were edged with lace...along with a pair of shocking pink fluffy mules.
This was in 1978. He hasn't had the confidence to buy me anything since.... ?

Sounds like a total fire hazard!

Too many boxes of chocolates over the years from unimaginative relatives and friends.

LucyW Sun 25-Dec-22 13:12:13

The first Christmas I was dating my late DH my mother in law didn't buy me a gift. Fair enough as she hadn't met me at that point. The following Christmas I got a plastic bird shaped pencil sharpener! Bear in mind his family were well off. A couple of years ago my daughter in law chose two photo frames for me - they were beyond hideous - ornate white plastic. I wouldn't have minded a plain plastic frame but these looked like something Liberace would have had on his piano! I know it is the thought that counts but ...

My friends son has just bought her an unwrapped bag of Epsom salts for Christmas. We had to laugh but could tell she was really insulted.

Only ever one from the husband, one of those dressing table sets, consisting of brush, comb and mirror. Oh how disappointed I was. In recent years from anyone toiletries, I could stock super drug and I don't smell 😂

For my birthday I was 'treated' to a football match. Bolton v Blackpool - in December. It was freezing and I loathe football. We lasted 7 years!
