Black Beauty by Anna Sewell. I know the first paragraph still by heart.

We didn’t have the money for me to have riding lessons and I would cycle around the lanes with my horse loving friend visiting all the horses in their fields. I booked my first riding lesson as soon as I got my first pay packet.

I had a beautifully illustrated copy of Heidi which I absolutely loved. Still love mountains. Not so keen on goats though.

I liked the Beatrix Potter Peter Rabbit books, I loved all the stories and would read them over, they made me smile, my favourite being 'Mrs Tiggywinkle'. I read them to my grandson and tell him tales of my childhood .. timeless!

Watership Down by Richard Adams, I saved all my pocket money up so I could buy a hard back illustrated edition which is beautiful and still have it today. Loved the story and all the characters.

The Children of the New Forest by Captain Marryat, all about children surviving alone in the forest in the 1600s, Cavaliers and Roundheads, wonderful stuff, started off my love of history.

Watership Down - I was obsessed with rabbits!

My favorite was Enid Blyton. My mother was widowed and left with four of us so money was very tight. She worked very hard to keep us fed and clothed. Went without herself. My book was read and reread until it virtually fell to bits. I was in another world when reading it.

trishtone Sat 25-Aug-18 10:01:56

It has to be the Famous Five books by Enid Blyton

I read so many books as a child but "Little Women" was my favourite.

As a child, my favorite books were French, the T.Trilby collection, full of wonderful princes and so on in exotic settings, Vietnam, Ruritania... As an adolescent, it was Gerald Durrell's "My Family and Other Animals"

I loved and read over and over The Railway Children by E. Nesbitt as a teenager. I don’t really know why but I think it probably had something to do with the children’s strength in adversity.

The Secret Garden - a really lovely story
