It's that time of year again (hurrah) and time for our best reads for Christmas page...great gift ideas to cater for every taste. Recommendations include fiction, non-fiction, cookery, quizzes and more.

And one very lucky person can win the lot...worth almost £600.

Simply tell us on this thread which gift you are most looking forward to giving this Christmas. It can be big, small, homemade, expensive or free. After all, it's the thought that counts.

Usual Gransnet terms and conditions apply. A winner will be drawn at random at midday on Wednesday 12 December.

My circumstances are such that I don't really have anyone to give a present to, where I will witness the unwrapping and the much hoped for pleasure. This gives me full reign to fantasise that I will win that damned lottery and then I will be able to give stuff that will be valued to people who so badly need it just for the dignity of having the essentials - young, elderly, refugee - a large list. It needs to be a hugely massively lottery win and after buying myself a few toys, the best financial adviser will advise me how to make the money grow so this lovely day wouldn't just have to be for one day in one year. It could change lives - use money to destroy poverty and loneliness and make a chain reaction. I'd be able to afford a hitman to remove Donald Trump from the planet and another to obliterate "austerity". It would be a brilliant Christmas smile

I am looking forward to giving my grandson the basketball hoop and ball that he is going to be so thrilled with. It is the only thing he keeps going on about.

I am looking forward to giving DS2 a can crusher as they seem to have a lot of cans filling up their recycling bin and crushing cans is good fun.

Better than any other gifts, this year will be the first with 4 generations celebrating together!

Not so easy to find books for gd as she is a big reader. Perhaps a token. The Pat Barker looks good by the way

A peaceful day of food and family, taking a break from work and responsibilities.

I'm looking forward to giving Christmas Treats to all our wild bird visitors and hoping to see a visit from 'our' Jay to collect another acorn or two which I will put out as usual. They give us so much pleasure during the year and Christmas is no exception.

My uncle (long dead) who served in both the North Africa & Burma campaigns during WW2 & never spoke of his experiences once remarked on the goodness of the Salvation Army, who brought parcels to the front when other agencies did not. For this reason my siblings & I give to the valiant Salvation Army every year. In memory of Michael a quiet hero, that’s my favourite bit of giving.

I'm looking forward to giving everyone the homemade sweets I have made. I'm hoping that they are going to taste good and that they'll like them!

I will be giving the gift of time to all my grown up children this year. Time so short in their busy lives I can fill the gaps in their demanding lives by offering babysitting, School collection, library trips and so on. I don't do big gifts.
But I do love to read and so do all my family.

Ewunia Thu 06-Dec-18 15:59:58

Laughter and merriment for all family and visitors.

I'm looking forward to giving books to my grandchildren as I do every year. I'm a strong believer in books opening the door to new adventures and experiences. The joy of reading a book is priceless.

I have only one grandchild, who is here because of IVF and much loved and valued by all the family, especially at Christmas.
Some other people's grandchildren end up on the streets as teenagers - but are lucky enough to be rescued by Centrepoint. I have seen what a difference these projects make to a young person's chances to access a place of safety, life/coping skills, education, employment, and to develop a belief in themselves. I like to think my donation this year will help these substitute grandchildren I will never meet!

I’m giving my 98 mother the gift of Xmas lunch. We’ve been going away for the last few years but we decided to stay home this year and spend the day with her. She loves to read, by the way,

Only a small thing and not very expensive but I am looking forward to giving my three-year-old granddaughter a baking set when she arrives the weekend before Christmas so that we can start a new tradition of her making mince pies whilst singing to the Andrews Sisters Christmas songs that have been our Christmas tradition for the last three generations. Lots of hugs, cuddles and giggles I hope.

I don't want any gifts this Christmas - so I am giving instead to the local food bank which is always asking for donations.

tunde Fri 07-Dec-18 18:09:46

I bought a lovely padded coat to my sister. I know how much she will love it. Probably she will go home wearing it.

My best Christmas gift will be happy smiling faces after Christmas lunch and just being together
