I loved the Short Fairy Tale by Hans Christian Anderson, ' The Little Match Girl'
I'm 54yrs old now, but I cannot read this Fairy Tale to my 7yr old Granddaughter, as it chokes me up every time I get to the end. My Grandmother used to weep when she read the Fairy Tale to myself and my cousins, and this alone evokes such memories of sadness with the Little Match Girl as she was sent out in the cold streets to sell matches for her impoverished parents. The story unfolds as she desperately tries to keep warm in a doorway, and uses her last match to warm her tiny hands. She dies oo the cold in the doorway, but her lasting thought was being held by her Grandmother, who has passed away. The overwhelming sadness of her dying cold and hungry still makes me sad, 48 years later. I still have the Hans Christian Anderson book, but when my Granddaughter sleeps over, I cannot read this particular story. Funny how things stay with you for years.

I would say i loved little red riding hood, but today they would think it awful to do with taste of a wolf i would imagine, and i also loved the film of peter pan. But there was a London production on the other month and i told my friend whos son and thier grandchildren live in the area and she said that peter pan scared their young grandchild, which i thought was a bit strange and odd statement as its supposed to be a nice story.

I immediately think of the beautiful illustrations in my Ladybird Cinderella book - I wanted a beautiful dress like her. I also had a book of Grimms' Fairy Tales which had some more sophisticated, and darker, tales which I enjoyed. As an adult I appreciated Saki's short stories and they have certain things in common with those earlier tales.

I loved Rumplestiltskin - the main reason was I just loved the sound of the name, and I still do!! Just saying it to myself brings a smile to my face!

My favourite was Goldilocks. I love animals & was captivated by the idea of the three bears having their own little house! I wanted to be Goldilocks & visit them so I could try out their beds & eat their porridge ?

Little Red Riding Hood. One of the few that has the tension of terror, I could almost be there in the hooded cloak, walking through the forest with trepidation, and the relief at the end when wolf gets his just deserts and Grandma is OK. The story itself was always much enhanced by a family who could read it to me so that it seemed fresh and new every time, and my fear and excitement was real.

Mine was Repunzel as I had very long hair when I was small and I used to dream of being a princess. Sad that she had to have it cut off to save her but I still loved it
