I loved books by Shirley Hughes and Judith Kerr, among many others, with my own children. Enjoyed reading them to the grandchildren too, along with newer books like The Gruffalo too!

The Quangle Wangle's Hat - I used to read it to my daughters when they were small and I can still recite it whilst the pages are upside down to me ... or indeed, without the book at all!

My youngest grandson is 2 and loves Zog and Room on the Broom. He can now repeat the words and we embellish the stories. He has a toy Zog now to cuddle whilst he has the story read. It's such a special time as they cuddle into you and chatter back. Because of lockdown he is living with us and now has a story from Papa, Granny and Mummy before going to bed. He also likes Thomas stories and the current favourite is Thomas Goes Crash as you can emphasise the crash. He knows the names of lots of the engines. We are a family who read a lot and I am so glad that all my grandchildren love books.

I love reading The Tiger Who Came To Tea the thought of a real tiger in the house both thrills and scares the children!

I love reading The Highway Rat. It’s in rhyme which the children love and has some repetitive lines which they join in on. I also love doing all the different voices and I think or hope my grandchildren love that too.

Any story with Dinosaurs is a massive hit with one of my great grandsons, but they alllove Thomas the tank stories but I think their all time favourite is The Gruffalo, they don’t move or make a sound when your reading it. I think it’s great children will sir and listen to you read them a story instead of watching the tv all the time.

I dont have any grandchildren yet but loved reading to my children. I have a secret (so there's no pressure) 'bottom drawer' for any grandchildren that come along including books of course . . . fingers crossed smile

I love reading the early Harry Potter books to my two young grandsons. There's plenty to discuss and they are always enraptured by the stories!

Colin McNaughton's. There's an awful lot of weirdos in our neighbourhood. A book of rather silly verse and pictures, such wonderful pictures

Polly4t42 Sat 16-May-20 14:14:30

My grandson aged 3 loves helicopters and the Harold book in Thomas and friends. He also loves fire engines and Fireman Sam books.

lexigran Sat 16-May-20 15:29:18

"We're going on a bear hunt", the children love doing the sounds and the repetition is easy for them to remember smile

I still love the Very Hungry Caterpillar, my granddaughters never tire of it,

Tricia247uk Sat 16-May-20 19:29:19

The Gobble Gobble Moo Tractor book by Jez Alborough. Both my toddler grandchildren (boy and girl) love this because, I think, they can identify the farm animals and join with me in making the animal noises as we read the book.
