During lockdown, and with friends who have allotments with an over-abundance of produce this year, I have re-discovered the skills of jam and chutney making.

Until businesses take this more seriously the effect we make, as individuals, is minimal.
The amount of items I purchase that only half fill the packaging is ridiculous - breakfast cereal, washing powder for instance.
A dog food company has recently 'improved' it's packaging by adding an extra outer sleeve. It makes no sense.

Re use most things even using old clothes up as dusters. Reusing bread bags for covering things in fridge or freezer

I am using Charity shops a lot more - donating and buying .
My local shop uses donated recycled material to make cotton washable shoppers . They are stitched by prisoners and sold for charity.
I always have at least one in my bag , more in my car.
Hopefully won't have to ever buy plastic bags as already prepared.

We installed second water butt to water the kitchen garden and greenhouse where we grow our own fruit, veg and herbs for coking from scratch. My partner uses only organic plant-based stuff to deal with the garden pests. We planted bee- and butterfly-friendly flowers, including mint and nettles. We feed the birds and provide water baths. There are 3 bird houses in the garden: robins love them. We use grey water to water trees and shrubs and to flush the loos. There are 2 compost bins to improve the soil and utilise the grass cutting and veg peelings, and an area of wild flowers, tall grass and some old logs for the insects. We plant sunflowers for bees and give the seeds to the birds in winter. I dry the washing on the line and use an eco-friendly washing cycle plus lower temperature setting. We unplug the electric devices from sockets. We re-use Xmas cards, parcel wrapping paper and bring shopping bags with us to the supermarkets. Old cotton T-shirts are cut up and used as rags and kitchen cloths. Empty coffee jars and ice-cream tubs are excellent for storage of kitchen staples. When cleaning, I use bicarbonate of soda and vinegar. We only take the car to do a by-weekly shopping. We walk to local shops and recycle everything we can. The list is endless.

I keep all jam jars, glass bottles, condiment jars etc., and re-use them for my home made jam, jelly, chutney, sloe gin, etc.

Cannot believe when I see how much people pay for ‘bought’ glass containers.

Just hang on to the ones you’ve got.

Some of mine must be years old.

I am gradually replacing both foods and household items with those made from hemp.I fully recommend hemp milk as an alternative to dairy as it's dairy products which produce the methane gas which is 20x more harmful than CO2 from the cows' farts.

I compost my food waste (banana skins, apple cores etc), reducing the rubbish I create that goes to landfill by around 50%

maggieriordan Wed 09-Sept-20 18:51:11

I’m making my own food from scratch so no packets, and any left-overs I store in old jam jars and freezer boxes. I’m selling unworn clothes on eBay and buying as new on bay so re-circulating my wardrobe for next to nothing!

I’ve been growing my own vegetables this year and plan to continue next year and expand the variety. I’ve also put led lighting everywhere at home and had solar panels fitted.
