I’m using less water, recycling everything, walking & cycling everywhere

Mooo Wed 09-Sept-20 22:50:00

I've been draught proofing my flat, I cant afford to do it all at once, but I've been improving things year on year. So far I've done the front door threshold, the sash windows, the gaps in the floor boards, the fireplaces and an old vent through the stone work. Its made a huge difference and not only is it all in the realms of DIY, its cost effective in a rented flat! I'm now at the point where the property owner needs to step up and upgrade things, but I'm not holding my breath...

freefan Wed 09-Sept-20 23:40:08

We are going to a greengrocers for our fruit and veg and they are all loose with no plastic packaging and all local produce so less of a carbon footprint. We are also walking a lot more and now use refillable water bottles.

Not eating meat, avoiding travelling by car as much as possible, not wasting food, low energy use and keeping the central heating off and most importantly not buying stuff!

kateloader Thu 10-Sept-20 05:48:33

I recycle everything that I can, I have minimal food waste and I make sure when I declutter I donate as much as I can

cathyval Thu 10-Sept-20 05:49:25

As a family we walk wherever we can and recycle everything that can be recycled.

tink3010 Thu 10-Sept-20 06:10:25

Recycle, re-use or gift as much as possible. Washing plastic packaging bags and using again. Putting things on free give away sites. Turn off electrical items rather than on standby. Walk when an option. Compost all possible rather than throw away. Collect rain water for garden. LED lightbulbs. When need to replace white goods choosing a good efficiency rating.

blondie123c Thu 10-Sept-20 06:44:30

We use our bikes and cycle 3-4 times a week now rather than just relying on the car.

As a family, we do lots of little things in our efforts to 'save the planet'.
We grow our own crops, tomatoes, beans, salads, onions, and give to friends and neighbours any surplus. Compost everything we can, recycle household rubbish, try to avoid buying plastic packaging as much as possible.
Why don't manufacturers and supermarkets do more and use packaging which can be recycled?
We only use the car when necessary, walk or cycle when possible.
Are careful with energy use, switching off lights, and not leaving electronics on stand by.
We donate to charity shops, hoping others can get use out of anything we no longer need.
Am sure we could do more, and are working on it.
We should all do as much as we can for our children and grandchildren.

I recycle everything I can

Seamus68 Thu 10-Sept-20 07:02:31

Trying to cut out using single use plastics and upcycling what we can smile

Lindsey29 Thu 10-Sept-20 07:36:26

Recycle recycle, having all energy efficient appliances at home and simply being more mindful in purchases.

sc00ter Thu 10-Sept-20 07:49:53

Cleared out the house, shed etc and either donated stuff to friends or charity shops.

LullyDully Thu 10-Sept-20 08:08:46

We are doing all that is expected of us. Recycling, less meat, fighting the plastic war, we don't let the car idle in a jam, it goes on and on. What an uphill climb all this is for the World. Like turning around a juggernaut going down a very steep hill. We all need to care .

gwyneth28 Thu 10-Sept-20 08:14:48

I try not to buy things in plastic, sometimes it's impossible, I reuse the plastic that I have, containers even bags I wash along with my washing up and leave to dry, over my spaghetti jar.
I don't use liquid hand soap, bars last so much longer and just put it in pretty dishes.
I have one cleaner that I dilute and decant into reusable spray bottles and use for everything, even for stained clothing.
I've been a vegetarian for over 30 years and grow vegetables in my garden.

That's just a few of the things we do.

carol2712 Thu 10-Sept-20 08:15:01

Never been one to change things for fashions sake more a makedo and mend, and buy classic cut clothes that go form year to year, put on another layer rather than turn up the heating and recycle all that we can. We are looking at an electric car but with lockdown haven't needed it more than once a week so it's giving us more time to research what is out there.

pjsaville999 Thu 10-Sept-20 08:40:41

I am cycling for small trips instead of using the car. And getting fitter!

sheilads105 Thu 10-Sept-20 08:40:58

I'm helping with the beach clean in Brighton. We've collected hundreds of plastic bottles, bags and even flip flops.
