There were no strategies for protecting the vulnerable and there had been a failure to engage the public. “We have a superficial prime minister who has got no grasp of public health,” Ashton said. “Our lot are behaving like 19th-century colonialists playing a five-day game of cricket.

From John Ashton.

I'm no fan of Bozo but I'm glad he's following the experts advice, unlike Trump who's making it up as he goes along.

I'm in agreement with our experts so far.

SirChenjin Thu 12-Mar-20 18:31:49

Is the penny finally dropping perhaps?

Opal Thu 12-Mar-20 20:07:23

Never mind, eh - we’ll just follow our Great Leader’s fantastic advice and take it on the chin

Well, if our "great leader" is following the advice of the experts, I don't see why you are criticising him SCJ. Unless you think you know better than the experts? Or is it just because it happens to be BJ? No surprise there then.

SirChenjin Thu 12-Mar-20 20:08:26

Did that these experts actually say “take it on the chin” too?

Callistemon Thu 12-Mar-20 20:12:15

Do you work in ICU, SirChenjin?
I have two nieces who work in ICU (nurses) and another who is a consultant in infectious diseases.

I am quite worried about them, two have young children, one is pregnant.

SirChenjin Thu 12-Mar-20 20:17:17

No I don’t - I don’t share details of which department I work in, I feel it’s potentially identifying information. I have a close friend who works in ICU and she shares your concerns.

Greymar Thu 12-Mar-20 20:19:13

We are to be thankful he is not like Trump? Unbelievable.

Hetty58 Thu 12-Mar-20 20:28:29

The lesser of two evils? Marvellous!

DoraMarr Thu 12-Mar-20 20:33:33

Pogs’s post on this subject is worth a read.

sodapop Thu 12-Mar-20 20:34:49

Dilyn is the little dog they rescued Callistemon

lemongrove Thu 12-Mar-20 22:28:10

POGS posts on this subject are definitely worth a read.
They cut through all the cheap political point scoring from Disgruntled LP voters.

Time for some posters to give it up, the UK government is getting things right, yes, including Johnson!
The NHS is planning various strategies to cope, including expanding ICU by using operating theatres if necessary, beds will be found for those who need them.

Callistemon Thu 12-Mar-20 22:37:44

sodapop thank you

I’m no fan of Boris, but I can’t help wondering whether Corbyn would have been any better in a crisis.

Not exactly renowned for firm decisions on difficult subjects, is he? He sat on the fence for so long over Brexit, I dare say he’s still got splinters in his a*se.

vegansrock Sat 14-Mar-20 09:52:26

No point comparing BJ to Corbyn now is there. He’s definitely yesterdays man. Where is Carrie though? I’ve read she has been whisked away to a luxury location far away from the city crowds.

Greymar Sat 14-Mar-20 09:53:51

Corbyn useless. BJ useless.

Callistemon Sat 14-Mar-20 09:54:25

We don't know what effect this could have if a woman is pregnant, do we, as yet?

Barmeyoldbat Sat 14-Mar-20 09:56:46

I just give up. We were in what Boris called the delay period with virus and what did he do to delay it? Sweet f..a. This is when he should have stopped large public events, Cheltenham Races for one and been testing at the airport. But no we just had to wash our hands.
I hear today that next week he is going to stop large public events after a load of events to come have cancelled. We are an island and surely it should have been easier for us to contain the virus. Everywhere else is doing far more than we are.

I'm with those who think we're not doing enough. I've asked on another thread whether anyone saw the programme on this on Ch4 last evening, Coronavirus - have we got it right?

Medical professionals were expressing concerns about our capacity to cope. I think that's worrying.

GracesGranMK3 Sat 14-Mar-20 10:35:46

I feel we can only trust the scientists and Johnson has done none of the posturings I would have expected and appears to be behaving like a grown-up. The opposition is asking the questions that need to be asked but also offering the support that needs to be offered.

We have a "don't know" situation and I have never expected people to behave like gods so I am not disappointed with what is happening. I would not say this lets the politicians off the hook in other areas but, currently, they seem to be doing the best they can in the situation we are in.

GracesGranMK3 Sat 14-Mar-20 10:42:58

Every country is worrying about their capacity to cope. No country has faced this before. Wash your hands, use tissues and keep surfaces clean. If they tell us there is more we can do, do it. No one has told us moaning will help us avoid this. It is not avoidable it is merely manageable.

Framilode Sat 14-Mar-20 10:49:37

Funny how Johnson is now following the experts. I thought they said people were fed up with experts.

merlotgran Sat 14-Mar-20 12:23:47

I just hope in a year or so we don't look back in hindsight and wish we hadn't listened to the experts.

As sometimes happens.

POGS Sat 14-Mar-20 12:31:38

This is a question I have asked before as this point has been made repeatedly .

Do you want Johnson to follow the experts or prefer to snipe about the fact that is what he is doing.

Do you think Johnson should do as the experts are advising him or are you of the opinion he is still an idiot who has not taken decisions unilaterally.

There is so much hypocrisy at a time of crisis I sometimes despair.

It is not just Labour voters who are not convinced by the Government response though is it. Rory Stewart and Jeremy Hunt are also not confident about it.

Different experts can have different opinions, I don't know either if the experts that the Govt. is listening to are giving the right advice or not, nobody does yet, so there is no need to pretend that Labour voters are just using the arguments to score political points.

Grammaretto Sat 14-Mar-20 12:37:25

Presumably the experts are not in agreement.
The politicians are all flailing around in the dark like the rest of us.
Russia hasn't been on the news much lately. How are they dealing with it?
