The Power of Music - a musical round robin

During this time of isolation, the members of the singing group that I run are sending each other musical items that we love, saying why and including a youtube link. I have discovered several wonderful pieces of music and artists that I did not know. Perhaps we could do this on Gransnet? Any genre.

Let me start with this item. It is Arleen Auger (a wonderful American soprano, who died of a brain tumour in 1993 at age 54) singing the seldom played, but I think the best, song from from Canteloube's Songs of the Auvergene. The words are in Occitan - a local dialect. I believe this is a shepherdess longing for her lost love. As an expression of raw longing and a piece of exquisite controlled singing I think it is hard to beat. I hope you enjoy it.

On FB not in .

gillybob Sun 22-Mar-20 23:03:18

Unfortunately I’m not in FB paddyann . I played his music to my DH when he was in ICU (in an induced coma) and all the nurses and doctors were hooked. I’m sure he gained some new fans .

I’ve watched a few YouTube video of Yanna and her father and thoroughly enjoyed them. smile

Have you seen him with his daughter Yanna ,Gilly she's excellent smooth jazz sound.Add his FB page to your a/c and you get a song every now and then from his Kitchen .It always makes my day

gillybob Sun 22-Mar-20 22:45:22

Oh Paddyann we love Eric Bibb too. we’ve seen him twice so way behind you smile

And this one is Adeles tribute to George Michael singing the song the way it was actually written as a ballad instead of an upbeat dance tune. It breaks my heart because he was so tortured by his demons
Take a listen

Askcombe I sang it to DH a G&S singer and producer. He is currently curled up in a ball groaning and asking if he can have the virus! In other words, he thinks it is brilliant

merlotgran Sun 22-Mar-20 13:40:29

Bbarb That's absolutely brilliant. I've just sung it out to DH who is cracking up. Where did you find it?

The brilliant Eric Bibb, every show is an uplifting experience ,even after seeing him live 24 times ...lol

Ashcombe Sun 22-Mar-20 13:09:00

If you are familiar with The Major General's Song from “The Pirates of Penzance”, you’ll appreciate this (with apologies for the incorrect “practise”.)

This is my absolute favourite flash mob. It is filmed in a Spanish library. All the more poignant at the moment.

All wonderful - keep them coming.

What is it about flashmobs that makes everyone weep!

Gaunt47 Sun 22-Mar-20 12:45:45

Bbarb Sensational! Thank you!

DanniRae Sun 22-Mar-20 12:44:25

Granny23 - I loved the Ode to Joy. Thank you.

Gaunt47 Sun 22-Mar-20 12:44:19

Luckygirl thank you, I'd forgotten about Arlene Auger, sublime voice. She recorded for a label I used to work for.

henetha Sun 22-Mar-20 11:57:37

P.S. I was lucky enough to once go to a Gloria Gaynor concert. She was fabulous.

henetha Sun 22-Mar-20 11:56:02

That's brilliant Bbarb . I sang it loudly... grin

Granny23 Sun 22-Mar-20 11:26:05

Can't stop now. This one is my DGS's favourite. He is a bassoonist.

Yes I know I am low brow but then so are a lot of people. Here's another one with a heartstopping moment at 2,00 minutes in. We had the privilege of hearing and seeing this live at the SECC in Glasgow, also with full pipe band.

Saw this it’s long winded but funny sing along to I will survive by Gloria Gaynor

Sing along now everybody!!!
.......
first I was afraid, I was petrified,
There was no loo roll down at Aldi and I very nearly cried.
Oh, how I spent so many nights just thinking how you did me wrong,
I used to wipe,
And now I’m forced to just drip dry!
No anti-bac!
No bloody soap!
And if you think you’re buying pasta, well, you’ve got no hope!
I would have bought that box of eggs, I would have rationed out my bread,
If I’d have known for just one second everyone would lose their head!

Go on now go, walk out the door!
You bloody stockpilers,
You are not welcome any more!
Weren’t you ones who just bought all the sodding beans?
You selfish gits!
I hope you spill them down your jeans!

Oh no not I, I won’t panic buy!
Oh as long as I have alcohol, I know I’ll stay alive,
Though I can’t buy my usual cheese
This will not bring me to my knees
And I’ll survive, I will survive, hey, hey!

It took all the strength I had not to not to fall apart,
There was just apples and a carrot in my shopping cart,
And I spent hours walking round just feeling sorry for myself,
The empty store, with boxes strewn across the floor!
And you’ll see me, somebody who,
Cannot buy anything she came for, and it’s down to you
And frickin’ Reg from down the road is such a selfish blimmin’ git!
Because he stockpiled all the loo roll no one else can have a shit!
(x2)
Go on now go, walk out the door!
You bloody stockpilers,
You are not welcome any more!
Weren’t you ones who just bought all the sodding cakes?
Can’t you make a crumble,
Do you people not know how to bake?
Oh no not I, I won’t panic buy!
Oh as long as I have alcohol, I know I’ll stay alive,
Though I can’t buy my usual cheese
This will not bring me to my knees
And I’ll survive, I will survive!
