I lost my sense of taste and smell when I had glandular fever in my teens. I remember being fed up as strawberries & cream just tasted like cotton wool. It lasted s few weeks I think.

I've had anosmia (loss of smell and therefore taste) for 8 years due to a viral infection. These symptoms are being reported as possible CV along with food/drink tasting foul etc. so you could well be one of those who are experiencing it. I would try to self isolate from other family members if possible - although if you've had it for 2 weeks it's likely it's too late. Hopefully your smell should come back soon - there is a FB page for anosmics which new people are posting on which might help. It's called Anosmics of the World Unite

Thank you for your reply's,I know it sounds a bit selfish and if I have had CV19 I must have got away very lightly but as a self confessed ' Foodie ' the fact that I have still been cooking baking and preparing lovely food and then sitting down and tasting absolutely zilch is soul destroying and the thought that it may last for some time is horrid but I know compared to what some people are going through it is just needs to be dealt with in a day to day basis.

The reason people lose their sense of taste and smell is probably because with this virus being akin to influenza it affects the sinuses.

Pudding123, by the second week I thought I'd had it because I had a pain in my back and my chest felt as though someone was sitting on it, then both legs " seized " up and I couldn't move them properly. I knew this was part of a chest infection as my body began to ache all over, even my fingers ached !

The cough was something else. That lasted a week. All this began on 29th of December and I didn't feel human until well into February. I didn't inform the GP or anyone, just took paracetamol, honey, rum in hot water and hoped for the best.

In a way it would be quite a relief to know you'd got away with a more or less non-symptomatic version of CV19 (a bit worrying if you'd been near any vulnerable people recently). I mean, that's what we'd all wish for ourselves and our loved ones, a very mild infection which is quickly over as soon as possible.
(Sigh) I wish!

Those symptoms are very similar to my tree pollen allergy. I get itchy eyes as well.

The sneezing and inflamed/blocked sinuses do cause a loss of smell and taste and I often wake up coughing with a headache.

I'm used to it in March and April so I wouldn't panic unless I had a temperature.

This may not have anything to do with coronavirus; it happened to my DD back in September. She was exhibiting no other symptoms so doctor didn’t have much to offer other than to offer antiviral drugs in case it was a virus, and if it didn’t clear up she would refer her to an ENT specialist. It took several weeks before it got back to normal; a very stressful time for her. It happened to an aunt of mine after a bout of pneumonia and she never regained either sense, but that was many years ago.

Jane 10,Yes I have and have asked my local Pharmacy if there are is any medication I could buy but they advised me to see my GP if it was still the same next week.As I have no other symptoms I do not really want to trouble my GP during this pandemic if at all possible which is why I have posted this thread to see if anyone has had a similar problem and how long it has or hasn't taken to go back to normal.

Gosh. I wonder if you had a mild form of corona virus. I assume you've looked at the relevant website?

I apologise in advance of anyone has seen this which I posted on the health thread a few days ago.I have had no taste of smell for 2 weeks now.I have previously lost my sense of taste and smell but only when I have had a really terrible cold(about 3 times in my life).I didn't really have symptoms of a cold I was sneezing for a couple of days ,had a slight cough and had woken up with a headache a couple of days (I never normally have either of these). What I would like to ask is have any of you GNrs had this happen to them ..If so has it cleared up and how long did it last?also did you do anything to alleviate your problems.
