Coronavirus

There is alas no cure for stupidity

US President Donald Trump has been lambasted by the medical community after suggesting research into whether coronavirus might be treated by injecting disinfectant into the body.
He also appeared to propose irradiating patients' bodies with UV light, an idea dismissed by a doctor at the briefing.
Another of his officials had moments earlier said sunlight and disinfectant were known to kill the infection.
Mr Trump's own public health agencies (unsurprisingly) warn against bleach as a medicine.

I think the Donald has a point, after all anyone injecting themselves with Domestos is unlikely to die of Covid 19.

Bijou Fri 24-Apr-20 20:58:02

Why doesn’t someone inject him!

Very true merlotgran. It's social Darwinism in action. It's one way of getting rid of very stupid people from the gene pool.

Esmerelda Fri 24-Apr-20 22:26:48

This seems rather appropriate ...

Hetty58 Fri 24-Apr-20 22:37:20

Spot on Esmerelda! (I'm sure they'll happily vote for him again, too.)

Callistemon Fri 24-Apr-20 22:43:49

merlot grin

I don't think he understands sarcasm.

Would they call the cleaner Trump Powerclean.

I am shocked and dismayed that Brunette10 or anyone else would think that everyone in the USA is like or thinks like Trump! I hope you are smarter than that. He did not win 100% of the vote then and most know he is a bully and an idiot. Do we suggest that you are all like your PM or members of parliament, particularly the small minded buffoons? There's nothing we can do about Trump at this point but wait until the next election. Even then we have to decide between the lesser of two evils and hope our House and Congress can keep the Pres in check.
But, PLEASE refrain from painting us all with the same brush, it's infair and offensive at multiple levels.

I am HORRIBLY disappointed by the cruel generalizations and assumptions made about US citizens posted here. Is it necessary? I've enjoyed reading and learning about my sisters and brothers from "across the pond" so far. Sadly, today, there have been a few that have really soured the whole experience.

From one of our news sources.

The US president has now claimed his comments were misconstrued and he was actually being sarcastic.

“I was asking the question sarcastically to reporters like you, just to see what would happen,” Trump said.

“Now disinfectant maybe on the hands would work. I was asking a question of the gentleman who was there yesterday, Bill, because when they say that something will last three or four hours or six hours but if the sun is out or they use disinfectant it goes away in less than a minute. What I was asking was a very sarcastic question to the reporters in the room.”

Lucca Sat 25-Apr-20 07:42:15

SueH49. I saw the original news conference and his claim to have been speaking sarcastically (as I said upthread). He was NOT being sarcastic.

SueH49 Sat 25-Apr-20 07:46:58

I agree Lucca, but this is what he does all the time- make a stupid comment and when he gets picked up on it makes up some story to cover his stupidity. He has been called out so many times and yet some people still believe every word that comes out of his mouth.

Grannynannywanny Sat 25-Apr-20 08:10:00

I watched his press briefing last night intrigued to see how he’d try to bluff his way out of it when it came to question time at the end. He didn’t, he walked off and didn’t accept any questions.

Lucca Sat 25-Apr-20 08:35:38

“Compare and contrast “. Donald trump....Bill gates.

MaizieD Sat 25-Apr-20 09:38:52

I don't think that he knows what the word 'sarcastic' means...

Callistemon Sat 25-Apr-20 09:43:50

No, he wasn't being sarcastic, he was making what he thought was a valid suggestion.

Well, if he thinks it's a good idea, let him try it. Why should anyone stop him?

Callistemon Sat 25-Apr-20 09:45:06

And he wasn't asking reporters, he turned to his medical adviser and asked her; she just squirmed with embarrassment.

Grannynannywanny Sat 25-Apr-20 09:52:23

Callistemon I agree. He barely looked at the reporters during his ramblings. His head was turned to the side directing his comments to the doctor in the hope she was going to speak up and agree. She looked uncomfortable but it was a pity she didn’t show her worth and step up to the podium and say it was wrong and dangerous. He appears to surround himself with people who won’t stand up to him and anyone with the courage to do so is fired.

MaizieD Sat 25-Apr-20 10:03:22

I'm afraid, Callistomen, that there is now video being tweeted that shows that 'squirming' medical adviser making excuses for what Trump said. Apparently he'd just got new information on what killed the virus, so he had to processes it. He was thinking it through aloud in the presser... ('presser' = 'press conference' - I'm learning a whole new vocabulary grin )

I don't know how these people manage to defend him with a straight face... or if they realise that they have immediately lost any respect people may have had for them as a professional.

Callistemon Sat 25-Apr-20 10:07:10

Oh dear.
The salary must be worth it.
Or perhaps she thinks, if she disagrees and calls him out for fake news, he will destroy her future prospects.

I think the video could do that, though.

notgoneyet Sat 25-Apr-20 10:52:52

I heard on the news a few nights ago that of two groups of people with Covid-19, one of which had been given the drug hydroxychloroquine and one who had not, there were more people who had died of the group who had the drug than those who had not......

What absolute rubbish.

Why would a sensible world leader ask a silly sarcastic question, concerning new information on a world pandemic?

They wouldn't, but it sounds very much like the actions of a young child trying to cover up a mistake or a misdemeanour.

(As an aside, the excuses from the medical advisor make it clearer to me how the trans agenda has gained hold even among those who should know better.)

@PamAyres

At last, we have a cure for all!
Ailments large and ailments small,
Good health is not beyond my reach,
If I inject myself with bleach.

Radiant, I’ll prance along,
Every trace of limescale gone,
With disinfectant as my friend,
Like him,
I’m clean round the bend.
