Coronavirus track and trace

I received a message on my phone this morning which said that I had been near someone with Covid 19 but that was it. So what am I supposed to do? Have received no further instruction so far. Tried ringing 111 but can’t get through. Has this happened to anyone else and what did you do? Any advice gratefully accepted.

This is what is supposed to happen...

"The text, call or email will tell you the next steps you should take, with a link to a questionnaire."

My first thought is, is the text genuine, as there are a huge amount of scam calls and texts going on. Did it definitely come from NHSTracing?

I believe if you have received this text you are supposed to start isolating for 14 days and await a call from the Track and Trace system, but there are no instructions what to do if you don't!

My DD had a scam phone call last night claiming she had been near someone with Covid. She checked the phone number via Google and it was on the scam list

If you have the number the text came from it wouldn’t hurt to check it.

This site may help you to at least know if the text was genuine, Gwyneth.
It has a section where you can type in the number and report it, if it isn't, and also up to date info about virus scams.

Yes I have heard of scams where they say you have been n contact with someone who has covid and tell you to pay the caller for a test ( when test should be free).

MissAdventure Thu 08-Oct-20 16:44:09

The who called me site is awash with reports of scams.

Thank you all for your really helpful advice will do all you have advised and also be wary of scams.

This sheds light on it, I think you have had an alert generated through the system on yiur phone, not the app. So you might have been in the same vicinity as someone with CV19, but too far away to have been at risk, you don't need to isolate!

My DH received a message on his phone which was similar but it then disappeared. This is also a scam.

There are so many of these scams going around at the moment, most of them to gain money. However I don’t see how this one can gain money from you. I would wait to see if there is a follow-up.

We went to a pizza restaurant on Thursday for our grandsons birthday and checked in via the restaurant track and trace. Within a couple of hours of getting home, we all had a notification that we had been near someone with Covid. This seemed unlikely as there was hardly anyone in the restaurant, and all distanced, and surely no-one would have been there if they were positive! It’s the only place we had checked in. My daughter was concerned, so we dug around the internet a bit and came up with this info. Apparently the notifications don’t come from the NHS app but from Google or Apple. Seems to be causing unnecessary worry.

Sorry it won’t let me post the image

I had the message, followed by the questionnaire and an instruction to isolate until a certain date. This was followed up by a phone call checking whether I needed any assistance to isolate effectively.

I did check (well, DH did) that the original text was legitimate.

Thank you for this. I received the banner message which then disappeared. I thought it might be a scam, but was a little concerned as I had been into a shop that morning, so have not been anywhere for a week or so just in case.

Missingmoominmama Sat 10-Oct-20 09:56:23

This was the initial text. It had my name at the top.

BassGrammy Sat 10-Oct-20 10:07:00

Missingmoominmama, that looks different to the notifications we got. Ours came up as a notification Which when clicked on, took us to the NHS site, but then disappeared. If yours is genuine it should show some sort of self isolation countdown on the track and trace app I think.

SueEH Sat 10-Oct-20 10:10:30

The app will let you know if you have been “near” to someone who has subsequently tested positive. But you will only have to quarantine if you were closer than 1 metre for over 15 minutes. And if that is the case you will receive a communication telling you what to do.
If you don’t hear anything then you were not close enough for long enough and you don’t need to do anything. It was just letting you know!

Barrygirl Sat 10-Oct-20 10:15:38

If it was received via a little red dot appearing on your phone, it is an error - it happened to me and I goggled it. The only time you need to isolate is when you receive an official text/message which outlines how you should isolate. This is a glitch in the app.

Missingmoominmama Sat 10-Oct-20 10:15:48

Bassgranny- it is genuine- we checked. I get phone calls every couple of days, to check I’m isolating too.

Rose30 Sat 10-Oct-20 10:31:40

I cannot download the track and trace app to my iPhone as it says I need IOS 13 (or something) and my phone does not have this spec. Do I have to buy a new iPhone to get it? Sounds like it is more trouble than it's worth!

Maured Sat 10-Oct-20 11:17:36

It was a ghost message. I’ve had two. I looked into it and there is a glitch on apple and other android phones. When you click on the message it disappears. What should happen is that you get more details.

DH’s phone says the same as yours.
He won’t be buying a new one.

Please see the BBC article on false alarms being sent out by the App. I had two a couple of days ago and spent 2 hours trying to find out if they were legitimate. Mine simply disappeared when I tapped on them. Take care.
