National Lockdown to be announced next week?

Apologies if there’s already a thread on this but the story is apparently in Saturday’s Times and on Sky. Press briefing Monday, lockdown to start Wednesday with schools and universities staying openness. To last until December. Why is this being leaked on a Friday night? Confusion and chaos now for the weekend.

Don’t bank on T & T Whitewavemark2 France have abandoned their system and Germany have admitted to tracing less than 40% of contacts with their system.

They both have the same faults ^human error^

Can you give us a link to that story, GG13?

He's not God. It's such a complex area that it's hard for anyone to plot a way through this with complete accuracy. Other countries are in the same state.

Such a good sensible post.
Things have to change at very short notice sometimes, so am not surprised if in fact it is announced on Monday.

Perhaps one of our French-dwelling grans could comment on the claim that France have abandoned their T&T system as I don't believe this is correct.

That's why I was asking for a link, Alegrias. It sounds fishy to me.

So if TTI operations aren't effective after all, why has the tory government, in the words of our Glorious Leader, spaffed £10 -12 billion on a privatised system when local authorities could have failed far more cheaply hmm

Yes the first track and trace app has been abandoned in France. It wasnt a success as only 2.5 million downloaded it compared with 16+ million in the UK.
I think a new t & t app is being set up in France, but what we have to understand is that the French are generally not as keen on using mobile phones as other nations are.

vegansrock Sat 31-Oct-20 13:42:21

I don’t know how anyone can defend this governments record- they could certainly have done better by not chucking billions at their donors , not wasting money on useless PPE, not defending Scummings, dithering and making complex rules amongst other failings. Let’s hope they apologise and do something straightforward this time round.

I find the continuous ‘point scoring’ between parts of the UK and other countries rather wearing. I’ve see expats in France, earlier this year smugly congratulating the French government and pitying those in the UK. There are no ‘winners’ I don’t believe any head of state/government gets up every day planning death, I imagine many have trouble sleeping at all. They are all human beings, most with families, many personally touched by this horrendous virus, ‘be kind’ seems to have got lost.

Quite true, well said.Political point scoring has no place in this situation. No government anywhere has ‘got it right’ and it’s silly comparing countries.
All governments are doing what they think is best to minimise health risks and trying not to damage the economy too much.I expect there is just as much moaning about politicians in all countries ( although the British do seem to take moaning and complaining to an Olympic level.)

Thank you *Ellianne". I assume that they are still using traditional contact tracing though?

Replacing one app with another doesn't mean abandoning contact tracing all together.

I’m so glad I live in Wales as we are two weeks ahead in the fight. There was a thread on here last week doubting the wisdom of the Welsh Government’s decision - they were right.

There was not a thread doubting the wisdom of the Welsh Government’s decision at all.

You misunderstood Casdon.
The thread was the decision about what was considered essential or non-essential goods, not about the wisdom or otherwise of lockdown, which we hope will work.

For example, a bottle of vodka was allowed to be sold but a baby's bottle was not considered essential.

The Welsh Government has revisited the decision on essential and non-essential goods.

I started the thread and you are changing the rhetoric.

Not abandoned, still using traditional techniques. Doesn't say how effective it is though.

Ellianne Sat 31-Oct-20 14:01:48

I can't remember where I heard it Alegrias, I will check. "Abandon" is an overworked word in France, so I would imagine it means they are updating things where the app is concerned.

Ellianne Sat 31-Oct-20 14:02:37

X post.
Thank you for that link.

There's going to be a press conference at 5. Was going to be 4 and now its 5. Guess they are still debating what to say. Safe hands.

vegansrock Sat 31-Oct-20 14:07:54

It’s strange that those who say it’s pointless comparing countries also say everywhere is just as bad ( even when it isn’t) , i.e. comparing countries. I remember at the start of the pandemic in Italy there was a whole thread on here saying it was so bad there because they all lived with their grannies in tiny apartments and hadn’t got proper toilets And it couldn’t happen here. That was soon forgotten. We had the highest death rate in the first wave - let’s hope we don’t go onto being top of the table again.

Luckygirl Sat 31-Oct-20 14:17:08

I am heartily fed up with all this supposed "leaking" of what is gong to be done. Just bloody well get on with it!!!!

I had just decided to start collecting GC from school again from Monday - now what the hell do I do!!??

No sense in having a lockdown. It did not work before, and it will not work now. All it will do is cause more economic probems, and cause delays in medical treatment. People are dying more of other things than Covid due to delays in treatment, also parks and nature reserves were closed last time. That is going to impact greatly on mental health.

I agree, Jaxjacky.

We do need a united effort in this.
As someone else pointed out, as Wales comes out of a fire break, England will be going into another lockdown.
There is no wall between, we are all supposedly part of a united country.
Perhaps those living on the borders notice the divisions most keenly.

But if they don't lockdown and reduce cases, even MORE delays in treatment will happen.

If the hospitals are jam packed with covid victims, there will be no space for other patients, and there will also be many more deaths in hospital of those admitted for other reasons, who contract covid in a weakened state.

LauraNorder Sat 31-Oct-20 14:53:33

Personally totally fed up with everyone blaming government.
Whichever way they go there’ll be those who want and do the opposite.
If everyone who can stay at home does so, if everyone who has to work complied with hands, face and space rules. If nobody visited others, partied indoors or out and had sneaky little hugs we just might get through this.
We have to stop whining about Christmas, birthdays and holidays and make some sacrifices for the good of all.

Sadgrandma Sat 31-Oct-20 14:54:31

If we do have to go back into lockdown I don't understand why universities will be kept open as it seems to me that things got worse when students went back. Surely students could study just as effectively on-line from home. I am very worried that we won't be able to look after our three year old granddaughter two days a week again. It broke our hearts last time and she really missed us.

Well yes lockdown did work, it suppressed the virus but not surprisingly, when we opened most things up again, cases began to rise. The Government are trying to balance the virus cases against the economics of this country, an impossible job I think.

The French mobile phone app has been replaced. We didn't have to download it, it just replaced the old one. It is much better and tells you on a daily basis that you have not been exposed to high-risk (unless you have I suppose). We can also use it to fill in the self-certification for leaving the house and get an update on the day's national infection statistics.
