Apologies if there’s already a thread on this but the story is apparently in Saturday’s Times and on Sky. Press briefing Monday, lockdown to start Wednesday with schools and universities staying openness. To last until December. Why is this being leaked on a Friday night? Confusion and chaos now for the weekend.

I am heartily fed up with all this supposed "leaking" of what is gong to be done. Just bloody well get on with it!!!!

I had just decided to start collecting GC from school again from Monday - now what the hell do I do!!??

It’s strange that those who say it’s pointless comparing countries also say everywhere is just as bad ( even when it isn’t) , i.e. comparing countries. I remember at the start of the pandemic in Italy there was a whole thread on here saying it was so bad there because they all lived with their grannies in tiny apartments and hadn’t got proper toilets And it couldn’t happen here. That was soon forgotten. We had the highest death rate in the first wave - let’s hope we don’t go onto being top of the table again.

There's going to be a press conference at 5. Was going to be 4 and now its 5. Guess they are still debating what to say. Safe hands.

X post.
Thank you for that link.

I can't remember where I heard it Alegrias, I will check. "Abandon" is an overworked word in France, so I would imagine it means they are updating things where the app is concerned.

Voilà

Not abandoned, still using traditional techniques. Doesn't say how effective it is though.

I’m so glad I live in Wales as we are two weeks ahead in the fight. There was a thread on here last week doubting the wisdom of the Welsh Government’s decision - they were right.

There was not a thread doubting the wisdom of the Welsh Government’s decision at all.

You misunderstood Casdon.
The thread was the decision about what was considered essential or non-essential goods, not about the wisdom or otherwise of lockdown, which we hope will work.

For example, a bottle of vodka was allowed to be sold but a baby's bottle was not considered essential.

The Welsh Government has revisited the decision on essential and non-essential goods.

I started the thread and you are changing the rhetoric.

Yes the first track and trace app has been abandoned in France. It wasnt a success as only 2.5 million downloaded it compared with 16+ million in the UK.
I think a new t & t app is being set up in France, but what we have to understand is that the French are generally not as keen on using mobile phones as other nations are.

Thank you *Ellianne". I assume that they are still using traditional contact tracing though?

Replacing one app with another doesn't mean abandoning contact tracing all together.

I find the continuous ‘point scoring’ between parts of the UK and other countries rather wearing. I’ve see expats in France, earlier this year smugly congratulating the French government and pitying those in the UK. There are no ‘winners’ I don’t believe any head of state/government gets up every day planning death, I imagine many have trouble sleeping at all. They are all human beings, most with families, many personally touched by this horrendous virus, ‘be kind’ seems to have got lost.

Quite true, well said.Political point scoring has no place in this situation. No government anywhere has ‘got it right’ and it’s silly comparing countries.
All governments are doing what they think is best to minimise health risks and trying not to damage the economy too much.I expect there is just as much moaning about politicians in all countries ( although the British do seem to take moaning and complaining to an Olympic level.)

vegansrock Sat 31-Oct-20 13:42:21

I don’t know how anyone can defend this governments record- they could certainly have done better by not chucking billions at their donors , not wasting money on useless PPE, not defending Scummings, dithering and making complex rules amongst other failings. Let’s hope they apologise and do something straightforward this time round.

Don’t bank on T & T Whitewavemark2 France have abandoned their system and Germany have admitted to tracing less than 40% of contacts with their system.

They both have the same faults ^human error^

So if TTI operations aren't effective after all, why has the tory government, in the words of our Glorious Leader, spaffed £10 -12 billion on a privatised system when local authorities could have failed far more cheaply hmm

MaizieD Sat 31-Oct-20 13:34:38

That's why I was asking for a link, Alegrias. It sounds fishy to me.

Alegrias2 Sat 31-Oct-20 13:33:52

Cross post MaizieD

Alegrias2 Sat 31-Oct-20 13:32:57

Perhaps one of our French-dwelling grans could comment on the claim that France have abandoned their T&T system as I don't believe this is correct.

He's not God. It's such a complex area that it's hard for anyone to plot a way through this with complete accuracy. Other countries are in the same state.

Such a good sensible post.
Things have to change at very short notice sometimes, so am not surprised if in fact it is announced on Monday.

Can you give us a link to that story, GG13?

How wonderful it must be to know everything MawB and MaizieD! What a pity it is that you aren't running the country as its clearly so blatantly obvious what is required. Would you consider offering your considerable knowledge and experience to other countries as they're mysteriously in the same predicament as us?

Um, they have had 10 months and the first wave to work stuff out.

Hardly 'Put on the spit'.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 31-Oct-20 13:16:24

jane10 oh dear

EllanVannin Sat 31-Oct-20 13:16:16

What an unholy mess !

Whitewavemark2 Sat 31-Oct-20 13:15:37

This time the Test and Trace system MUST be up and running efficiently by the time lockdown ends.

If it doesn’t then imo the government should resign in its entirety.

Unnecessary sarcasm Jane10.

MawB2 Sat 31-Oct-20 13:10:23

Honestly, panic buying is just ridiculous isn’t it?
What surprises me though is our government’s constant preference for “too little too late”

The draconian measures in March right across Europe were catastrophic for both my London daughters’ careers , but I would still rather have my family alive and now that it is not just us Grans who are at risk, we cannot just say we personally will hunker down and isolate.
The latest regional lockdowns seem to have resulted in a lose-lose situation.
I wish I had an answer, but if I did, perhaps Johnson, Van Tam,Hancock, Whitty etc would be seeking my wisdom!
