If you're thinking of coming on this thread to say "it's not over yet", don't bother. This is good news and this is the beginning of the end.

Sparklefizz that’s not the case, with the other vaccines on the way also, the Government’s intention is that the whole eligible population will be offered the vaccine by Easter. It’s a massive national operation to achieve that, so the mass vaccination centres are the only way forward.

I am glad to hear this news- but a bit concerned of how its going to effect those of us whom have to be careful of what we 'have' because of other medications we are on, like warfarin for example- or how it would effect those pre-existing medical conditions? But aside from the safety aspect of that, im all for it- and cant understand why its not being made compulsory to be honest! This is a bloody pandemic, it should be compulsory (if its safe medically) so that we all can feel safer, not like its still some kind of covid russian roulette when we are back out in the world!?

I cant wait for this vaccine! My daughter is having chemo and we are being so careful for her sake to protect her. On another point my husband died of pulmonary fibrosis, something they are now finding in patients who have been hospitalised with Corid-19. I do not want it and believe me, nor do you.

diami There would be uproar if Matt Hancock jumped the queue and had the vaccine when he's not eligible.

My friend's daughter has recently died of Covid. She went into hospital for a minor op, and tested negative before she went in, as per procedure. While in hospital she developed Covid and died just before the 2nd lockdown. She was in her early 50s.

I will be having the vaccine.

Sparklefizz your post is going to worry and upset many people waiting to go in for an op.

Beau2020 Wed 02-Dec-20 11:37:05

Brilliant news this morning, I will be in the queue, obviously high priority people first, but we are heading in the right direction. Can’t Wait ?

I am a full time carer in my own home. I emailed the surgery to ask about carers on the priority list. They said they don’t have the vaccine yet, they don’t have the criteria yet and so can’t say. The surgery will have to organise this mass jabbing and they cannot really do that until they know the criteria. So the vaccine is approved but now we wait for criteria to be delivered to the surgery.

That's the same as I am and I'm not expecting to be called until next summer at the earliest.

growstuff Wed 02-Dec-20 11:34:54

She's Number 5.

I agree with Ginnytonic. I too find that suspicious. I won’t be having the vaccine at this time but will definitely have it at some time in the future, maybe next year at some point. I’m 68.

Well, Jaibee12 according to the list I posted above from my local Council, your age group is No. 7 and will probably not be called until the middle of next year at the earliest, so I shouldn't worry.

Schools and universities should be first on the list.

See above!

growstuff Wed 02-Dec-20 11:31:07

It should be given to the young ones first as they're the spreaders ? Less spreaders mean less infected.

But it doesn't work like that!!! It has not been established that it stops transmission. It protects the people who have been vaccinated and younger people have far less risk of dying.

Lazyriver Wed 02-Dec-20 11:30:51

The first vaccine available has to be kept at an extremely low temperature, well below a standard refrigerator, and has to be used within 5 days.
You can be sure that many people are working on this within your local area, and making sure that there are smaller vaccination hubs as well as the bigger centres.
Whether you choose to have the vaccination is up to you, but I would recommend you do your own research first and not just listen to the hysterical propoganda out there.

This is the priority list my local Council has just put on Facebook:

The JCVI's priority list for the first phase of the vaccine rollout is as follows:

1 - Residents in a care home for older adults and their carers
2 - All those 80 years of age and over. Frontline health and social care workers
3 - All those 75 years of age and over
4 - All those 70 years of age and over. Clinically extremely vulnerable individuals
5 - All those 65 years of age and over
6 - All individuals aged 16 years to 64 years with underlying health conditions which put them at higher risk of serious disease and mortality
7 - All those 60 years of age and over
8 - All those 55 years of age and over
9 - All those 50 years of age and over

Two groups will not receive the vaccine:

1 - Pregnant women
2 - Children under 16

The vaccine has not been advised for pregnant women as there is no data on its safety.

"Women should be advised not to come forward for vaccination if they may be pregnant or are planning a pregnancy within three months of the first dose," the JCVI stated.

It will also not be generally available for children. The JCVI stated that "following infection, almost all children will have asymptomatic infection or mild disease" as such don't need it.

However it will be available for "those children at very high risk of exposure and serious outcomes, such as older children with severe neuro-disabilities that require residential care".

I hope they consider putting close relatives of care home residents on the list, it’s been such a sad time for them not being able to see their loved ones.

There wouldn't be much point because it doesn't stop transmission. If relatives are infected, they will still pass it on to care home residents. It protects the person being vaccinated, not other people.

Growstuff before we get to Priority 5 there should be a lot less Covid 19 about provided the rest of us get the jab. I remember as a child we didn’t seem to have much choice. We just went. I was terrified of the BCG jab but even that wasn’t as bad as I imagined.

Not necessarily. The vaccine doesn't prevent people from catching Covid 19, nor has it been established that it stops transmission. Therefore, it is likely that just as many people will get infected but they hopefully won't suffer severe symptoms or die. If people aren't vaccinated, their risk to them will be exactly the same as it is now.

Tiggersuki Wed 02-Dec-20 11:25:25

A close friend of mine is 77 ( supermarket delivers her food)and apart from taking her dog out she will not go out until she has a vaccination however long she has to wait.
We should be welcoming a vaccination program. Just hope it all goes smoothly, unlike Track and Trace!!!!

Will await my appointment for vaccine. With the huge amount of NHS and care workers to be done can't imagine the over 70s will be called until into the new year at the earliest. Seems a the vaccines require two injections so looking like it will be into spring before a large number of us are protected. I've ordered two more face masks as think we will still be wearing them and hand cleansing will still be the norm for a few months yet. Anyone heard how the Pfizer-80°C storage issue has been solved?

Bazza Wed 02-Dec-20 11:24:47

I’m also very grateful to all those than volunteered.

Kim19 Wed 02-Dec-20 11:24:40

Urmstongran, ?

Kate51 Wed 02-Dec-20 11:22:37

As someone who is immunosuppressed and been shielding for months I will be delighted to get it as soon as they make it available to me, although there are others ahead of me ( quite rightly ).

Ginnytonic5 Wed 02-Dec-20 11:22:00

For all of you rushing to get the vaccines just remember 2 things ..it will not prevent you from getting it completely, it may stop you getting it as severe ..but then the virus as all flu viruses can mutate so render it useless anyhow! Secondly Pfizer ( who incidentally have many multi million pound lawsuits outstanding ) have been granted immunity by the Government against lawsuits in the U.K. for adverse reaction to this drug ..ask yourself why ?
