If you're thinking of coming on this thread to say "it's not over yet", don't bother. This is good news and this is the beginning of the end.

How very sad that this post, like so many others on gransnet, get hijacked by those with a political drum to bang. This is not about the eu, Brexit, remainers, the left or the right, or even the monster raving loony party . It should be about celebrating the fact that , thanks to some truly wonderful and hard working scientists, there is a vaccine. There is hope and light at the end of a very long and dark tunnel. Let us just be thankful for it.

Lucca

In fact why did brexit even get a mention in the first place !

Exactly

MawBe Thu 03-Dec-20 18:11:52

Daisymae compared to the Donald, I think even Homer Simpson might have qualified as the voice of reason ! tchgrin

Lucca Thu 03-Dec-20 18:09:24

I certainly would not deinigrate the efforts of scientists and in fact I sympathise with them, it must be so frustrating, infuriating etc hearing people saying the vaccine isn’t safe etc.

But I would just like to reiterate that on GN the hurrah for Brexit did not come from me for example! I am a great fan of my country but I don’t agree with saying we are better than other countries.

Daisymae Thu 03-Dec-20 18:07:58

I read today that Dr. Fauci the US top epidemiologist has been critical of the UK approval process. He has been a voice of reason throughout the pandemic so I am concerned. He is going to be on Sky news at 7 tonight, might be interesting to hear what he has to say.

worldwide cooperation by the best people (sadly with very little input by the UK
Would you care to give evidence for this assumption, Biba70 taking no notice whatsoever of the work done in both Oxford and Cambridge and indeed even at leading hospital trusts such as the Royal Free in London (which was one of the first to trial and use Remdesivir as a treatment for Ebola years ago and use it on a trial basis for Covid patients back in March. )
But no, let’s denigrate U.K. scientists and medics and use this for another opportunity to bang on about Brexit.

biba70 Thu 03-Dec-20 17:53:03

What is so wonderful about this vaccine story, is how it is truly a magnificent story of EU and way beyond EU, worldwide cooperation by the best people (sadly with very little input by the UK) - and to turn this into a ridiculous nationalistic lie- is sad and stupid beyond belief- and hurts the UK's reputation even more, at this absolutely crucial time- both with Covid and Brexit.

MayBee70 Thu 03-Dec-20 17:36:31

He’s not a daft wee laddie. He’s a government minister at a time when we’re trying to do trade deals with the rest of the world. It just makes me ashamed and angry. He doesn’t even know much about education.

felice Thu 03-Dec-20 17:32:15

As I said, laugh at it, including the daft wee laddie in the news just now saying that the UK has it because they are better than the Belgian and other scientists who they have actually bought it from.
SIL works near the depot and says lorries are leaving Pfizer heading all over Europe, really UK when your politicians make statements it goes Worldwide. Silly.

biba70 Thu 03-Dec-20 17:30:05

And their words/lies are all here, Sharma too.

Petty, indeed, Parsley- lies as those are indeed more than petty, and the world is watching, the EU too.

re a vaccine invented by Turkish immigrants in Germany and made in Beligum

how stupid sad and the EU and the world is listening to this- and take offence, or rather laugh out very loud at the hypocrisy and stupidity of it all

Parsley3 Thu 03-Dec-20 17:21:47

This is so petty, biba. Hurrah, we the people of the world, have a vaccine!

biba70 Thu 03-Dec-20 17:13:36

Yes, it was Hancock, then Dorries, Rees-Mogg and then Gavin Williamson - who blatantly and very deliberately politicised the vaccine news, and deliberately brought Brexit into it- saying we were able to be the first because we have left the EU, and because we are the best ...

Lizbethann55 Thu 03-Dec-20 17:01:39

Well said MawB

MawBe Thu 03-Dec-20 16:52:51

As I didn’t hear him, can you remind me of his exact words?

MayBee70 Thu 03-Dec-20 16:47:41

But it was Hancock that tried to make people think that we only had the Pfizer vaccine because of brexit.

MawBe Thu 03-Dec-20 16:45:08

And might it be possible to not bring jibes at Brexiters/ /Remainers into the discussion.
An international emergency demands an international response and, dare I say it, an international: mindset.

MawBe Thu 03-Dec-20 16:42:46

Then why the gleeful repetition, Biba70?
Only idiots deny this is an international effort but let’s not ignore the contribution by our own scientists, biologists, chemists , epidemiologists, researchers and trial volunteers.
I think the likes of Hancock etc claiming our excellence in the field poorly articulated but let’s not run our own contribution down.

NotSpaghetti Thu 03-Dec-20 16:35:24

Yes biba this is a world-wide effort.

Lizbethann55 Thu 03-Dec-20 16:12:28

I just wish I knew where montana lives. I would like to live there too. I know far too many people who have had Covid, and some who have died. All in this second wave. I knew of no one in the first wave.

biba70 Thu 03-Dec-20 16:09:11

Not my comment- but from a British man today- along with 100s in the same vein

''A vaccine designed by Turkish nationals, developed in Germany, manufactured in Belgium and funded by a US multinational....
Nothing British about this vaccine at all..
British exceptionalism and naked arrogance at it's demonstrable best.
With an attitude such as this, the rest of the EU won't be sorry to see us gone...''

Lucretzia, no one- has denied your comment is fact- just that the reasons given are just totally disingenuous lies.

felice Thu 03-Dec-20 14:08:06

Lucrezia we already have the vaccine here, just not rushing to vaccinate until all the infrastructure is in place.
And not claiming bragging rights either, prospective starting date 5th of January.

NotSpaghetti Thu 03-Dec-20 14:03:15

The issue with being first is simply because (as numerous posts above explain) we have decided to use our "emergency approval" route.

And, as loads of people above have also explained, this is nothing to do with Brexit. We have had this ability for some years now.

In my opinion it's good that it's on the way - but the ridiculous things people are saying is driving me bonkers. I'm sure I'm not alone here!

Seems the over 80's are now higher up the priority list

"People aged over 80 who are at hospitals for other reasons will now be the top priority for the first batches to arrive of the Pfizer/Biontech vaccine, which are due to arrive in coming days. They will be followed in the priority order by care home staff.

NHS staff will be the next priority to receive the vaccine, but limited stocks are expected to mean most of them will now not receive it until after Christmas." Health Service Journal today.

Roll on January!
