I could weep
These idiots are not only endangering themselves but every one of us - the wider population, not just GN, I mean.
How many Christmases are going to be ruined because of this total lack of responsibility?
How many lives?
No wonder we need lockdowns when people cannot be trusted to be sensible or considerate of others.

No, you misunderstand me. I won’t let anyone in my house (except DH and the dog). I just don’t understand why all of my neighbours are constantly chatting to each other, having visitors etc. Because we’re shielding we feel different to everyone else in the street. Even the next door neighbours who are much older and more vulnerable than we are are outside chatting with everyone. We just don’t understand it. And they don’t seem to understand why we don’t want to stand outside having a non socially distanced drink with them. Once we’ve had a vaccine we’ll loosen up but we’re not dropping our guard when we’re so close to that.

MayBee70 How awful for you feeling as you do I just can't understand some people neighbours could at least phone you to ask how you are couldn't they, mind you its lucky you have your daughter so near to you to do your shopping.
Keep posting on GN as you will never be short of someone to chat to if you feel lonely.flowers

Luckygirl

*in fact a lot of people break the regulations just a bit because they think they are a special case* = reckless!

We’ve seen so much of this one any “what are your Christmas plans” threads

Summerlove Sun 06-Dec-20 18:18:22

I’m curious what the government expected when they imposed a four week lockdown before Christmas.

People had four less weeks to “shop local”.

This is hardly a surprise

I haven't had a visitor for 10 months because I'm shielding. To protect myself, others and the NHS. But I haven't taken part in their street karaokes or been in and out of their homes. My daughter lives 5 minutes drive away. She has not been in my house for 10 months. She delivers food to me. We are not spending Christmas together. I'm very much part of my village community, or at least I was until there was a pandemic when I watched in horror as other people behaved as if there isn't one. That's what has made me feel alienated. It's as if there are two groups of people; those that realise there's a pandemic and those who seem to ignore it.

Do you have no family locally? What about your neighbours, don't they knock for a chat. 40 yrs is a long time to live in a village and you haven't had a visitor for 10 months.

Aha! A late nomination for group festive season entry for the 2020 Darwin Prize.

All too predictably, most of the shopping hordes will be fine, maybe some sniffles but there will be those who will be unwell around Christmas Day & New Year when the NHS teams are taking a much-needed break & there is a skeleton (!) service.

The government told everyone to "eat out to help out" (we didnt)

Afterwards we found out that as a result Covid rose by 30%.

The government say people can shop. (we arent) There is nothing worth taking that risk for. We can shop online. Stupid is as stupid does.

MaizieD Sun 06-Dec-20 17:03:03

It might have helped a bit if mask wearing outside had been made mandatory.

Toadinthehole Sun 06-Dec-20 16:55:24

I agree Bluebelle. It won’t make any difference, but they’re doing everything wrong, not just something!

cornishpatsy Sun 06-Dec-20 16:48:08

Shops are open and we are allowed to shop so that is what people are doing.

I can not see a way of limiting numbers so not everyone goes to a town centre at the same time.

Lucretzia Sun 06-Dec-20 16:42:18

It is a real problem and a Christmas Market has had to be closed down.

Photos can be manipulated but not sure those of London have been.

I am sorry Jaxjacky for letting my emotions get the better of me,
I appreciate that for some people the risks and consequences are perhaps remote. There will be many who have not been directly affected , other than perhaps not hugging their grandchildren -if indeed they have even stopped that - just as there are other Grans whose AC are manning the NHS/education/police or other public services front line and who can take every precaution in the world personally but whose livelihoods or lives are at even more risk because of the stupidity and selfishness of others .
Yes I am angry when it is suggested that such pictures might be manipulated or faked or when somebody can’t see “what anybody is doing wrong”.
I think more of us should be angry and that instead of welcoming the easing of restrictions with a “shop till you drop” day out in town, need to see it as a device by politicians to try to tell us what we want to hear.

MayBee70 Sun 06-Dec-20 15:46:22

People in our village were socialising outside last night. Not sure if they’d all turned their Christmas lights on but there were certainly more than 6 people congregating for quite a long time. Maybe there’s just something wrong with me in that I have no desire to go shopping or socialise with my neighbours. My neighbours seem to have people coming and going from their houses, too. I haven’t had a visitor for 10 months. In fact I’ve lived in my village for over 40 years and I actually feel alienated by it.

Jaxjacky Sun 06-Dec-20 15:17:28

MawBe I’m suggesting neither, I am fully aware thank you and check the worldometer figures almost daily along with our local figures. You have no idea of my real world and I find your tone rather harsh, however, your view is, of course, very valid.

MawBe Sun 06-Dec-20 15:09:03

If you can’t spot what was wrong both in Regent Street and Nottingham Christmas Market yesterday I give up.

Clearly some people need regulation as they seem totally incapable of responsible behaviour. This is a pandemic for gods sake. Over 400 people ar dying of it every day -many of these both premature and unnecessary. Their families won’t be having much of a Christmas this year or for years to come.
When did collective responsibility die out?
If numbers of cases and deaths go up after this sort of behaviour our economy will also be slower to recover - so more deaths, more shops and businesses closing, and more redundancies.
BTW it is nothing like being on a beach in the summer- out in the fresh air and sunshine - have you ever been on Regent St when it is heaving?
If London goes back into Tier 3 after this I should not be at all surprised.

BlueBelle Sun 06-Dec-20 14:47:12

Well were they doing something wrong ?
We certainly cannot tell by these photos
I agree with you Jaxjacky we cannot be verbally slaughtering
everybody. it’s going to make no difference just makes for a much nastier community and much more negativity amongst us
Gransnet went through weeks of slating people calling them idiots and morons after pictures were posted on Bournemouth? beach it made no difference There wasn’t a big spike after that

There will be much more of a spike after Christmas when 15 people can get together in one house !!! Daftest rule ever but of course it’s the shoppers that will get the blame, easy pickings

Urmstongran Sun 06-Dec-20 14:39:43

Fools.

Our daughter aged 40y this month is in week 9 of long-Covid. She caught it at the end of September and has no underlying conditions. She said it’s been awful and has never in her life felt so poorly and yes, scared because it’s a new virus and in the wee small hours would disappear down a rabbit hole worrying if the virus was doing any long term damage to her heart and lungs.

This virus is nasty. It’s not only oldies who get it badly.

Lancslass1 Sun 06-Dec-20 13:41:49

Apparently four people have been arrested!
Four !!
They were all doing wrong .

MawBe Sun 06-Dec-20 13:36:33

Two wrongs don’t make a right Jaxjacky and as for “slating others” are you suggesting we just sing Always Look on the Bright Side and “hope for the best” ?

Sounds as if you would prefer not to recognise the reality of what is going on in some places or don’t live in the real world.

Jaxjacky Sun 06-Dec-20 13:29:13

MawBe maybe I am. I’m just growing a bit weary of people slating others when we as individuals can’t govern others, only behave as we see fit. Yes it annoys me when I see others, some close to home, breaking lockdown; ignoring distancing, moaning about posties/deliveries/ retail open or not. I have to try and believe the majority are doing their best, whilst doing mine, or there’s no hope.

Luckygirl Sun 06-Dec-20 13:22:30

My nephew is 25 - he has the virus and is really quite poorly. Youth does not ensure a mild dose - his is most certainly not mild.

MawBe Sun 06-Dec-20 13:17:32

Jaxjacky

BlueBelle it’s often the angle of the camera, an aerial shot may well tell a different story, typical press.
I’m not denying there were more people out, but as others have said and I’ve read on GN, plans to gather indoors, often different people on different days over Christmas, seems to me to be riskier.

I think you are being optimistic!
As well as the numbers on the streets, just consider those in the shops, the buses and underground trains used to get them there and think again is it just typical press ?

Septimia Sun 06-Dec-20 13:14:17

Well, when things are safe enough again, some time in the future, those of us who have been carefully obeying the rules and keeping ourselves as safe as possible can meet up and celebrate our survival. All the idiots will be long gone and it will just be us. Hope to see you then!!

Rosalyn69 Sun 06-Dec-20 13:11:19

People never fail to disappoint me.
