I can understand as an island nation we are very protective of our fishing rights, but it is only a teeny part of our GDP I understand. Surely we should be able to compromise on this.

I know Scottish & Irish fishing quotas and boats are mainly family owned, but over half of the English fishing quota is foreign owned, and catches are mostly sold abroad.

The French want 75% of the fishing rights.

The UK negotiators have offered them 40%

That’s a big gap to bridge.

Oh the irony!

Farage is trending because he’s complaining about France closing their borders??????

You couldn't make it up! ?

Panic buying is the most selfish thing anyone can do in my opinion, it’s ok for those with money in the bank I’m all right Jack to stuff their cupboards and fridges.

Spare a thought for the young families and older folk with limited income who exist day to day, can you just imagine how they will feel when they get to the shops and find the shelves empty, particularly at this time of year.

Anyone panic buying/stock piling should have the items removed from them at the checkouts.

I couldn't agree more. Panic buying is not an option for those with very limited income and therefore not able to keep a stock of food which we luckier ones can. Maybe they don't have freezers either but surely that cannot be true of the selfish idiots who emerge from supermarkets with their trolleys full? I have a regular fortnightly delivery and always have at least two weeks food, etc in stock, Perhaps if people who could do likewise were better orgqnised they would not need to panic buy?

To those who think the French are banning UK lorries because of fishing - why have the other 20 countries closed their borders to UK travellers?

Good question!

GrannyGravy13 Mon 21-Dec-20 11:32:11

I have never said that the French have closed their borders today due to fishing, they like other EU Countries and those further afield have closed their borders to UK traffic/citizens due to Covid and the new variant.

Rosalyn69 Mon 21-Dec-20 11:33:33

I forgot that innuendo doesn’t work on text and sense of humour has had a COVID bypass.
However is it not interesting that the French are behaving in this way at this point in time.
I shall now retire behind the Wall.

GrannyGravy13 Mon 21-Dec-20 11:33:57

I was just posting that fishing quotas/territorial waters are the one of final hurdles of the Brexit negotiations.

So the extremists on here will use this as proof that the UK, especially England, is the worst place in the world. PaddyAnne will be at the border with her breeze blocks. Panic buyers will add to their loo roll stocks, just as well they can’t have overnights guests cos their spare room is full of pasta, flour and loo rolls.
The rest of us will keep calm and carry on doing our best. Merry Christmas ?

I'd be manning Offa's Dyke but the new variation is in Wales anyway.

According to a friend's DD, trolleys were being piled up with toilet paper after the announcement of the Welsh lockdown.

People will need it after eating all the stock piled sprouts.

Maybe the sharp fall in the French stock Exchange (CAC40) got them to see sense.

beverly10 Mon 21-Dec-20 11:52:27

Did my store cupboard and freezer items with perishables such as bread, which can also be frozen last weekend.Should see me well into the new year.Hopefully hmm any panic buying will be over.

My neighbour here in SW London went to Waitrose at 7 am and said it was rammed. We were supposed to go to Cornwall and my OH went on ahead last week as he has an essential dentist appointment there this morning. I'm not now joining him as I don't want to be "that" person who thinks they're entitled to break the rules. I hope he can get back here tomorrow as he's bought all the food!

Why only outwards from the U.K.?
Is it not possible that the variant has spread in the OPPOSITE direction by trans-European lorry drivers coming into the U.K.?
Presumably they have comfort breaks once on this side and that would explain why it appears to have originated in Kent. .

That's exactly what I was thinking, as soon as they said that it had started in the South-East.

Have we heard anything at all about a 'mutant strain of Covid' on the European-side of The Channel .................... or has that been kept 'under wraps'?

vegansrock Mon 21-Dec-20 12:11:39

Why does it matter where it “started”? The fact is, it’s spreading fast here and other countries want to minimise the risk.

ALANaV Mon 21-Dec-20 12:27:31

In the US there was a faction known as The Preparers ...people who had built underground storage for the canned and paper goods ....in case of a nuclear war ................maybe we should do that grin after all, Brexit is coming .......COVID is here ......the perfect storm !....meanwhile, keep calm and carry on....getting like BoJo now ...slogans and no common sense ...........ah well, c'est la vie ..............the Navy will fit trawl nets to their patrol vessels perhaps .............

Exactly.

I find it fascinating that we can look back and see how it spread across the world - but we can also learn from that. As I said earlier there were multiple introductions into the U.K. from Italy at the beginning of the year (fewer from elsewhere) so it does make sense to shut borders - we should have.

SARS meanwhile largely spread across the world from one person vomiting in a lift iirc (I need to go and check that now as I read it about 6 months ago when they were first tracking strains).

Bit late, aren't you, ALANaV:?

People have been prepping fro Brexit for ages, some since the 2019 threat of 'no deal'.

I'm rather relieved that I have my little stash..

Off to Sainsbury's later to see if the NE is panic buying or staying calm grin

Luckygirl Mon 21-Dec-20 12:47:59

What a pity the UK was not closed to inbound traffic back in February.

Now that we have become the threat, other countries (very sensibly) are doing to us what we should have done to them at the start!

Fennel Mon 21-Dec-20 12:49:01

I went to our big Tesco this morning and it was very busy, but no more than usual for the week before Christmas.
I thought it was very interesting that last week's reading from the old testament was Joseph's advice to Pharoah, interpreting his dreams, was when there's a time of plenty plan ahead. ie store away provisions for the hard times ahead.
Good times don't last forever, nor bad times.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 21-Dec-20 13:01:14

It seems that the penny has finally dropped. We have very little push back from posters denying reality and claiming project fear.

Be nice to welcome them back into the reality fold?

MaizieD Mon 21-Dec-20 13:09:56

Just had a report from a friend that the local Morrisons is jam packed solid.

If Sainsbury's looks to be the same, we're turning round and coming home again. We really only need milk today...

Baggs Mon 21-Dec-20 13:11:36

Is it known whether the virus mutation happened in the UK or came in from elsewhere?
