Some good news for a change

Callistemon Wed 30-Dec-20 11:01:28

I don't mean to be negative, just realistic.
I don't mind which I have, after all, the flu vaccines are only about 60% effective and we trust those to protect us.

Callistemon Wed 30-Dec-20 10:58:57

Genty I assumed that was why its approval was delayed - that more data was required in order for the study the effectiveness on older people . It was not as effective in trials as the Pfizer vaccine but cheaper and more easily transported.

I could be wrong.

LauraNorder Wed 30-Dec-20 10:58:47

?I’ll have my sleeve rolled up and ready as soon as it’s offered to me.
The more of us that have the jab, the more the future for our children and grandchildren will be protected.
?

Seriously? I am sick to death of conspiracy theorists going on about “the motives” and “what we are all being told” and “what are they injecting us with”.....if you are so worried, don’t take it and risk joining the 71000+ who have already died.

Luckygirl Wed 30-Dec-20 10:52:58

Missed out a bit: "You say that your body knows best what to do in these cases, but it did not help these poor souls; and their bodies were not living on a cocktail of drugs."

Carolpaint Wed 30-Dec-20 10:52:32

Yes Kamiso, the negativity of this forum does make me avoid it.
I worry that USA will now withhold and rubbish our vaccination as they have scuppered so many inventions that they have not created. Think Concord.
Am looking forward to my vaccinations and the return of the joys of freedom, museums, art galleries, eating out, seeing friends and family unfettered, etc.

NanaPlenty Wed 30-Dec-20 10:51:51

Great news and the second dose doesn’t need to be given for 12 weeks meaning lots more people can start being immunised. I have noticed a lot more negativity in Gransnet recently as I know others have. It’s a shame - we all need support especially at the moment. Of course people are entitled to their opinion but there is a way of expressing things surely. I would be disappointed not to be on Gransnet as it’s been a great site but I don’t want to come on an find people constantly sniping at each other - don’t need it anytime, especially now.

Sparklefizz Wed 30-Dec-20 10:50:36

Right. I'm coming off this thread as the wonderful boost I felt this morning when the news broke is being damaged by all these negative posts which are pulling me down.

Luckygirl Wed 30-Dec-20 10:50:11

Mimi22 I am indeed able to think for myself, and what I think is that you are talking total rubbish!

I also think that you are entitled to refuse the vaccine - all the more for others, so that's just fine.

I find the attitude that nature always knows best utterly ridiculous. Nature is cruel - it is survival of the fittest - nature did not help the millions who historically have died of plague, TB, cholera, diphtheria etc. You say that your body knows best what to do in these cases; and their bodies were not living on a cocktail of drugs.

We are privileged to live in an age of science, and proper sanitation - we have been lulled into a false sense of security and this pandemic is a wake-up call for us to value science and recognise nature for the cruel enemy it often is.

By all means refuse the vaccine for your self - but do not peddle your nonsense to put other lives at risk.

Spookwriter23 Wed 30-Dec-20 10:43:36

I'm not having the vaccine, you don't know what side effects it has, I don't trust it, I'm not being a guinea pig, to a new vaccine, that no one knows enough about

Kamiso Wed 30-Dec-20 10:43:32

MissChateline

Indeed it was ....but on the same day! The message being.....be goo and behave yourselves now and you may get a shot in the arm at some point later this year. I don’t think it’s a coincidence at all.

One reason I am keeping my distance from GN. There’s always someone who has to complain and criticize however potentially life changing the news is. We can begin to look forward to a brighter future and will no longer be endangering all the care workers. So let’s find something to whine about!

The negativity is appalling and contributes to the anxiety and MH issues others are coping with.

Luckygirl Wed 30-Dec-20 10:40:40

Calculations put me in line for February for jab. Can't wait.

The Oxford vaccine holds out the prospect of better coverage in the third world because of easier storage conditions.

BlueSky Wed 30-Dec-20 10:34:14

That’s the one I’ve been waiting for!

Whitewavemark2 Wed 30-Dec-20 10:28:12

I guess if you are young and low risk, you can afford and have the luxury of choice, but as you get older that choice and the balance of risk changes.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 30-Dec-20 10:25:42

mimi of course you are perfectly entitled to refuse the vaccine, we live in a free society.

I assume that you will refuse, the various drugs recently produced to fight the virus if you are unfortunate to get it?

By all means have the debate about the vaccine, but excuse me while I toddle off to have my injection, along with DH who is vulnerable and high risk.

You see it is all about risk isn’t it at the end of the day.

gillgran Wed 30-Dec-20 10:23:30

This is really good news, we've been waiting for this to be announced, ready for roll-out in early January.
EV, you should get yours very soon, as I think you are the same age as my sister, (I'm 5 years behind you, in the next age group, so when will I get mine?)

It's given a lift to my sagging spirits!!!!

rockgran Wed 30-Dec-20 10:22:07

Hurrah!smile

Whitewavemark2 Wed 30-Dec-20 10:21:02

Yes I think that the data has been accepted as satisfactory even though it isn’t complete regarding the half dose.

DD was convinced and fearful that it would not be accepted meaning more months delay.

Brilliant news.

Mimi22 Wed 30-Dec-20 10:18:45

Love that you have noticed that Genty, and interested that so many pass it by even when it has been highlighted. I have discovered that 'virus' has never been isolated in it's purest form and am curious what these vaccines are actually meant to be doing if that is the case. Can't see how injecting a load of some lab based concoction into my body is going to assist my body from doing what it knows best how to do, especially when the jab is being created for something that hasn't been proven. Would love to see research into how many of those sadly dying have been living on a cocktail of drugs in advance and have been suffering a multitude of side effects from them. Often drugs are given to counteract the side effects of drugs being taken and eventually our bodies give in to the stress of that. Have also been trying to find evidence of the virus being spread from person to person via coughing/spluttering/breathing over each other. Of course we have all been told that is true, probably all of our lives. Just because you believe it, doesn't make it true though. Just because you have spent your life looking in that direction doesn't mean that you can't begin to question the validity of it. Where is the actual evidence of it? Going back through the history of medicine, I have yet to find proof. So far, it isn't showing up. Now if the spread in that fashion was not true, we are all heading in the wrong direction and if it is true, that needs proving too.

It is the shut down of any questioning, refusal to debate on equal terms, the one-sided scaremongering news reports, and 'if you don't do as you are told then you are .......' attitude that is most alarming. What has happened to curiosity? What has happened to thinking for ourselves? What has happened that those that have taken everything fed to them as absolute have become so condemning of those that are asking questions, and those seeing stuff that really feels very wrong are being stifled?

Aren't we all in this together? Don't we all want us as humans to live a kind, generous, loving and healthy life? Does anyone think that for one minute, a person questioning the narrative is doing it for any other reason than they really think this is the wrong route to be taking without fully transparent research into all possibilities and that includes the possibility that the starting point is an error?

Grandson2008 Wed 30-Dec-20 10:18:44

Brilliant news thank you to all the volunteers and all the people that have worked on it. A light is beginning to show at last I will never take normality for granted again thank you

MayBee70 Wed 30-Dec-20 10:14:56

Witzend

Hooray! Much more practical from a storage POV than the Pfizer, and I gather costing £3 per dose as against £15.

Horrible cynic that I am, I was beginning to wonder whether certain people in high places were delaying it because they had a financial interest in the Pfizer one.

I did think that myself. Doesn’t the chief medical advisor have shares in Pfizer? Having said that there was a question about the reduced initial dose so, for once, I’ll give the powers that be the benefit of the doubt. I was expecting it to be approved yesterday so do wonder if it was delayed by one day for maximum effect. Still great news, though.

Genty Wed 30-Dec-20 10:14:03

@Casdon, I wouldnt call 3 weeks outdated, it was published on 8/12/20. No doubt if there was an update it would have been updated on the Oxford University website where I got the original info, I certainly wouldnt look on vaccine threads on here for accurate info.

Ladyf Wed 30-Dec-20 10:12:47

Thank you YorkLady for your acknowledgement of the volunteers in the covid trials. I work in clinical trials (not Covid) in an administrative capacity. The importance of volunteers is rarely acknowledged, though without volunteers there would not be life changing medications for patients. How many of us on GN or our loved ones take medications that have been through trials? I know how hard the trial staff work and how committed they are having been involved first hand. I am happy to have the vaccine and am deeply grateful to the volunteers, staff and those working to enable us to start living our precious lives. My best wishes to all.

Casdon Wed 30-Dec-20 09:52:33

Genty that information is outdated, if you look on the other vaccine threads on here there’s more recent updates about the trials including older people, which I’m sure the media will report on. It’s brilliant news, my hope is that the effectiveness is increased by the longer gap between the first and second doses as the ongoing trial is indicating, let’s all keep our fingers crossed on that.
