Coronavirus

Is the new corvid variant actually American?

New coronavirus variant may have been in US since October.

A coronavirus variant carrying some of the same mutations as the highly contagious British variant may have been in the US since October and already be widespread, a re-analysis of more than 2m tests suggests.

Genome sequencing to confirm whether the variant observed in Americans is the same as the so-called B117 variant currently circulating in the UK is under way.

Witzend people in other countries receive the same kind of stereotypical, thumb nail media articles that people in the UK receive about people in other countries.

Claiming that the Swiss have some kind of superiority complex is an example.

MawBe

But you brought it to our attention - why?

Because it is of interest of course. That is obvious.

Who is going to get the blame for the beast from the east on its way?
Take care out there in two weeks time!

No point in blaming anyone, but it would explain why rates in the USA are through the roof, including in California where, so I understand, they have been quite strict on prevention measures. It would also be interesting to look at the variants in Brazil where the UK vaccine was tested because rates there are so high.

It's good to see that somebody likes us.

Did none of you see the vitriolic posts on GN about China when all this started Some people called them everything under the sun
Well I guess it’s our turn now

For those who don't mind reading the Guardian, this is a good summary:

Really? I am currently more concerned with things closer to home -Covid, the vaccine, friends and family, the economy, education etc than whether other nationalities are wringing their hands at the state of affairs here.

So why bother contributing to a thread you don't find interesting MawBe? Sounds a bit pointless to me. Leave the discussion to all of the others that ARE interested.

Gosh, Petra, that article is so sycophantic it is practically crawling up Boris' bum! It annoyed me even more by having an article about topless Amanda bl**dy Holden in the side bar.

This is such a common passive-aggressive response when anybody dares to disagree with anything isn’t it?
I am “contributing” as you put it to express my opinion that it is a particularly noxious form of stirring to tell anybody that a third party is badmouthing them.
My opinion is as valid as yours and if only those who echo your point of view are permitted to post, it doesn’t make it much of a “discussion” dies it?

MawBe Fri 01-Jan-21 12:18:21

Does - not dies

Viruses mutate, always have and always will.

As for vitriolic posts on GN about China yep I was one of those posters. China knew about the virus long before they owned up to it.

One of the Chinese female journalists who broke ranks and informed people of the existence of the virus has been jailed for four and a half years, she has been on hunger strike since the summer and is being force fed.

MayBee70 Fri 01-Jan-21 13:03:43

It’s vitally important to track the progression of this virus. If this had been done when it first emerged in China we wouldn’t be in the mess we’re in now. The South African variant sounds very worrying as it appears to be more transmissible and also appears to have a worse effect on younger people than the original virus (although that isn’t proven). Every country has to be open about that is happening in their own country and other countries need to be quick to respond in every way possible.

But it wasn't all Chinese, was it?

At the time I remember seeing quite a number of xenophobic posts about the Chinese on social media. For example, somebody on a local Facebook page even made an offensive comment about the local Chinese takeaway.

A number of east Asian-looking people in the UK also reported "go home chinkies and take your virus with you" kind of comments.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 01-Jan-21 13:14:01

Of course it wasn't all Chinese growstuff I was referring to the Chinese Government and top medical officials.

As for folks turning on People of East Asian appearance "stupid is as stupid does" as my dear Grandmother would say!

GagaJo Fri 01-Jan-21 13:29:32

'it is a particularly noxious form of stirring to tell anybody that a third party is badmouthing them.' There is no third party. I am responding to your question (direct address, two participants only), 'But you brought it to our attention - why?'

Don't ask a question if you don't want an answer.

I wasn't getting at you, but unfortunately some people don't know the difference between a government and the people of a country. Just look at the anti-French comments in the media last week.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 01-Jan-21 13:47:11

No idea what the answer is growstuff , unfortunately you cannot legislate for stupidity.

I still have faith in the human race and like to think that the majority are good and that they will outweigh ignorance in the end.

CraftyGranny Fri 01-Jan-21 14:09:39

I am sure I read somewhere that this new variant was first seen in Brazil, which could explain the high rate in USA.

petra Fri 01-Jan-21 15:55:07

Gagajo
Your the one who inferred that everyone is asking, what's the matter with the uk.
I gave you a counter opinion of a German journalist who gave his name

GagaJo Fri 01-Jan-21 19:05:09

Ah, sorry Petra. I thought you were referring to the article.

Yes, where I live new people that I meet DO ask me. Frequently. They think the UK is nuts. I usually just agree with them but I think they all think all Brits WANTED to leave the EU.

Summerlove Fri 01-Jan-21 20:12:30

Esspee

I am not particularly concerned about where it came from. I just want it to go away.
Apportioning “blame” is pointless.

Completely agree

Callistemon Fri 01-Jan-21 21:10:21

They think the UK is nuts.

I would say that is xenophobic.
