Exercising once a day?

Can anyone explain to me why we are only allowed to exercise once a day. I take my dogs out twice a day locally (in a very rural area) and avoid other people. What is the problem with this?

Misschateline would it be dreadfully rude to ask how old you are? I (at 79) am downright envious of your strength and your get-up-and-go! I really wish I was still like you.

DaisyL, to get back to your posting|: I am not a dog-owner but I have friends who are - and is seems to me that the sensible thing is to continue with your dog's walks as usual, being sure (as it appears you are) to be careful about being near anyone else. This is what I think most (responsible) dog owners will continue to so: and in a "very rural area" this is surely not something that is going to cause any Coronavirus problems.

If you (*MissChateline*) come back and say you are in your eighties, I think I will curl up and die out of shame.

Exactly Blinko
I take Hattie out once a day during the day and rarely see a soul although if I do meet someone else from the village, with or without a dog, it helps to relieve the isolation of being on my own and I think it is vital for our emotional and mental health to do what we can about loneliness.
Hattie also has a short toddle before bedtime when I definitely don’t see a soul!
How we define exercise can vary enormously and I make no apologies for my daily pattern.

Absolutley, MawBe. I am grateful to a friend and her pooch. I walk most days with her and her hound, usually for about an hour but could be more, or less depending on the weather. We've discovered some delightful off road walks here in the Black Country, learning about local history along the way.

For mental health and physical well being, you can't beat it!

I’m 66 in 2 weeks time. I’ve always been active. I had a Croft in the outer Hebrides several years ago then returned to Yorkshire where I worked on a farm. Later when I had an office based job I went to my local gym for classes but got bored of this. I just love the feeling of being out in the fresh air and how good it makes me feel. And no I’m definitely not a gym junkie by any stretch of the imagination!
My partner hates exercise of any kind, is overweight, smokes and has had a hip and a knee replacement. I’ve never had a twinge of any kind anywhere. Good genes maybe but a belief in personal responsibility definitely.

Miss Chateline, I think the problem is more going ‘for supplies’ every single day. That’s what is likely to endanger others and yourself.

I’m staggered that anyone needs to shop daily so they can eat fresh foods. Sounds more like an excuse to go out, which in more normal times would be absolutely fine.

I'm astonished that someone believes that the shops destroy all unsold food at the end of each day, and replenishes with fresh food the following day.

Of course, they don't, so no reason why three or four days' supply of food can't be purchased at a time and stored at home.

Unless it's just out of sheer recalcitrance

Moonlight113 Wed 06-Jan-21 12:26:15

Keep it up MissChateline. For as long as you can.

Purplepoppies Wed 06-Jan-21 12:26:54

It seems everyone who is not following the rules/guidelines will have their own justifications as to why they don't apply to them.....
And nobody should be surprised the country is on its knees with this virus ?

Buffybee Wed 06-Jan-21 12:27:25

Smileless2012
None of us can go to the theatre, meet friends to go out for meals and see family Buffybee and as MissC isn’t doing these things either , I don’t see the relevance of your post.

If you’d like to read my post again, you’ll see you missed my point entirely Smileless.
I am quite aware that none of us are allowed to do the above, my point was that we are not insufferable because we can’t do what we want to do.
Whereas, MissC stated that she became insufferable if she couldn’t do the thing that she likes to do.
Plus, you’re another one making up the rules to suit yourself. Not only doing it but posting on here to tell us you are breaking the rules.
Unbelievable!

Theoddbird Wed 06-Jan-21 12:28:25

It is a guide. They ate just saying do not stay inside 24/7

Moonlight113 Wed 06-Jan-21 12:29:25

Oh, how I long for the days when we had the incentive of going in shops, to tempt us out of the house. I hope my get up and go comes back when this wretched lot is finally over.

Redgran18 Wed 06-Jan-21 12:39:24

My problem is that you are on this site openly bragging about breaking the rules and basically saying” well why shouldn’t I?” You can’t bear not eating fresh food every day. Diddums. And you are 66? Sounds like you are a spoilt , attention seeking 14 year old.

mrsgreenfingers56 Wed 06-Jan-21 12:49:23

Only come onto this thread later than most. But just doing some cooking and cleaning and the snow is still down and the sun is out so off for a walk. We need that fresh air and exercise. I was very sorry to read of Cabbie 21 posting that the mother of a friend died when she fell when out alone.
To Callistemon - I have been a keen skier (bend ze knees), cyclist and serious walker all my life covering huge mileage and my knees and hips are just fine but I was diagnosed with breast cancer. No justice at all.
Miss Chateline - loved the snowy pic of Stoodley Pike! Fab, been up there many times and wonderful remote place. Keep going and blow the cobwebs away!

MummyJoJo62 Wed 06-Jan-21 12:50:07

The problem is opening gates and climbing over styles etc so I make sure I sanitise my hands/ gloves before a walk and immediately afterwards. I have two large dogs who need two walks a day and I always arm myself with poo bags, sanitizer and common sense!

Merryweather Wed 06-Jan-21 12:58:15

It's everyone!

You go to the shop you contact someone - you go cycling and your minimal people around - you contact someone, you walk in the woods, forest, moors - you contact someone. You cough, sneeze, touch your face or breathe then touch anything else -you leave a trace of yourself while out on your minimal contact shop, walk, cycle.
Why is your mental health or your anxiety more important than passing on a deadly virus? Or someone’s right to life?

You picked up the virus this morning on your walk, cycle, shop. Keep it to yourself.
No one needs daily vegetables or bread.
No one needs to walk for five hours a day.
No one needs to leave the house except once a week for a week's worth of shopping.

People do need water, food and to breathe. Your spreading the virus around prevents others from doing exactly this.

I'm so sorry but I'm not going to reduce myself to your level to reply in the same vein to your nasty vindictive personal and virtue signalling post. For goodness sake there is no need for this.
I've had many private messages of support in the last couple of hours and I suspect that these are from people who do not wish to be subjected to this sort of nasty venom.
All I can say is that when this ghastlyness is over I intend to be emerging in tact mentally and physically.
I am actually out for my afternoon stomp right now. Not a soul in sight enjoying a beautiful sunny afternoon. A bit healthier I think than being on the sofa watching day time TV

lizzypopbottle Wed 06-Jan-21 13:00:42

So many people have mentioned 'common sense' but many people have none. That's why the rules have to be simple to understand.

Wake Wed 06-Jan-21 13:09:27

Doesn’t mention how long you can exercise for. If some people stay out for a few hours surely you can do more than one short burst.

valerieventers Wed 06-Jan-21 13:16:26

We are not interested in your exercise regime, for us lucky ones that can get out, keep it to yourself
be SENSITIVE to others, bragging about it is what irritates many.

Helenlouise3 Wed 06-Jan-21 13:17:20

Yes Casdon in Wales we are allowed to exercise more than once a day, but we have to start and finish at our own home. the only people we can exercise with is those that live with us. We're not allowed to meet a friend In England exercise is once a day but no time limit and unless you live on your won where you're allowed to exercise with one other person, you can only exercise with people that you live with

mumofmadboys Wed 06-Jan-21 13:19:35

If everyone left the house once a week for the shopping and at no other time, the health consequences from lack of exercise would be immense.

grandtanteJE65 Wed 06-Jan-21 13:22:51

Limiting people to only excercising outside their homes once a day, is surely simply a way of mimimizing the risk of infection being passed on.

Not living in the UK, I don't know whether exercise in this context includes dog walking and going to the shops or not.

Where I live, only one person from each household is supposed to go into any shop at a time - suitably masked of course. We may walk dogs or exercise as much as we want outside, as long as we are alone, or alone with the dog or dogs.

We cannot do a sport that involves contact with others as since yesterday we have to be two metres apart from everyone else, unless they are members of our household.

It suprises me that OP and others seem to think that they can just use their own common sense instead of obeying the restrictions. The rules may be daft, but they have to be obeyed if we are to have any hope of conquering this virus.

montymops Wed 06-Jan-21 13:23:06

The trouble is - life is not black and white but ‘various shades of grey’! I had Covid way back in March/April - quite badly but not hospitalised - and therefore am not fearful. I obey the rules mostly but use my common sense as well. I cannot think that going for long treks in deserted countryside locations, could possibly be a Covid threat to anyone!

Cossy Wed 06-Jan-21 13:23:53

The once a day rule has been implemented to try and lessen the amount of people out. Without wishing to sound too rude many of us don’t live in rural areas and if we just keep “using common sense” and “interpretations of the rules”, we will just be on a never ending spiral of infections.

I don’t live in a rural location, sadly, I live in a highly populated area, and I have dogs, but also have two large parks and a beach all within walking distance, it would be a bit chaotic and busy if we went out more than once.
